they'd both heard it used to denote the commercial aspect of Christmas, but it's not exactly a really common slang word people use every day,

That's why there was a song brought out and it reached high in the charts at the time and pretty much everyone I talk to calls it crimbo.

Yeh but it doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to work out Crimbo is short for Christmas, especially when we are actually IN the Christmas period.

Also I've lost count of how many times the word Crimbo has been posted and explained on this board each year. I'd expect by now for everyone to know what it means.

I've been posting here for nearly 8 years and I have never once heard of that term. Maybe it's because I don't live where you do. And maybe you shouldn't get to frustrated when you have to explain something when it isn't a universally known term.

I use Crimbo myself, it's pretty common.

Can't say I use it, but I have heard the term. It's fairly obscure British slang though, I'd never expect a non British person to grasp its meaning. Or a great many British people, for that matter.

I've never really got slang that's more or equal effort to say or explain than the word itself. 'Crimbo' takes just as long to say as 'Christmas' and opens you up to needing to explain it. Why bother?

After posting with him so much in tnz, I understand Tachyon Shield's slang perfectly, which is probably a sign of doom.

But to answer the actual question, the only thing I can think of is buying baking ingredients in bulk. No other time of year do I ever by so much and bake so much.

Hell, even "Xmas" takes fewer keystrokes and is more universally recognized.
