NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Congrats to Buckeye linebacker James Laurinaitis for making his third straight AP ALl-American team, as well as a few others this year. Buckeye CB Malcolm Jenkins pulled in quite a few as well, this year.

Some Penn State stuff:

Joseph Vincent Paterno got a three-year contract extension.

Daryll Clark's backup QB, Pat Devlin, is transferring and won't attend the Rose Bowl. This means Clark's backup will be Paul Cianciolo. It's not the best situation - the only time Cianciolo got any non-garbage time was against Michigan in 2006 when both Morelli and Clark were knocked out of the game.

Penn State landed a replacement QB recruit today - Kevin Newsome, from VA's Hargrove Military Academy, who looks to be in the same mold as Clark.

I have to ask if and how he will be able to implement a successful defense at the college level. Granted, the system he's been using in the NFL probably requires and NFL type of player, but is Monte sharp enough to craft a college version of it? Or design one that better fits the NCAA FCS type of player?

I don't think that should be a problem (as long as they do a good job of recruiting). Many colleges use his defensive schemes (e.g. Tampa 2). And one of Monte Kiffin's disciples, Pete Carroll, had no problems becoming a successful college defensive coordinator.

That's pretty solid support, then. I guess my concern came from other attempts to take a pro level plan and implement it at the college level. Having his dad there at Tennessee should be a huge relief for the younger Kiffin. Lord knows Lane will have a hard enough time as it is getting used to the fanaticism of Vols fans. After a couple of years, it will be interesting to see how his results compare with Rich-Rod's at Michigan.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that Kenny Britt of Rutgers didn't even make the final ten for the Biletnikoff Award. Frankly, that's disgraceful, since he's arguably one of the nation's three best receivers.

Well, that's no surprise. JoePa more or less should get an indefinite contract. He's not leaving unless he chooses to.

It's kinda odd he's transferring now and not in a couple of weeks so he had a chance to play in this game.[/quote]

I don't despise Oklahoma. I don't love them, but I don't despise them. Oklahoma State is my team. You have to support your conference in the bowl games. I'm not going to root for an east coast team that the press blathers all over.

Also, I have $50 on Oklahoma plus 7.

The Hoilday Bowl should be a good one Dorian. One of us is going to end up disappointed by the outcome, but it should be a great game.

Well, you have one supporter at ESPN: Lee Corso hasn't ceased talking about how Oklahoma is actually the best team in the country for about three years now. Someone really needs to stuff a sock in this guy.

Congratulations to the Richmond Spiders for winning the FCS National Championship.

Despite finishing fourth in their conference, the Spiders put together a great playoff run that included a win over the defending champ Appalachian St. and a 24-7 spanking of Montana. The Grizzlies, who averaged nearly 200 yards rushing per game were held to only 39 yards in the finals by the new champions.

Congratulations also to Minnesota-Duluth and Mount Union, who capped off undefeated seasons by running the table and winning the Division II and III titles. Mount Union had an incredible season, with the championship final (31-26) being the only game they didn't win by three or four touchdowns.

In the NAIA playoffs, Sioux Falls cruised to a 23-7 win over Carroll College 23-7. The Sioux Falls defense ended the season averaging less than 6 points per game.

I saw the Richmond game (well, part of it, I couldn't exactly manage to have full interest the entire game, they seemed like they were dominating, though). Beating Appalachian State is impressive by itself (although someone had to do it eventually). Richmond plays in a tough conference for I-AA football (although I guess that doesn't say much overall).

An excellent win for Sioux Falls ... but Carroll remains the college football team of the millennium, with five national championships since 2002.

It's sad: Sometimes evil does triumph over good. :(

And with two teams in national finals, Montana lays solid claim to being the best college football state in the nation!

And Rutgers finishes the season with a flourish: Down 17-6 at halftime to North Carolina State, they dominate for thirty minutes and win 29-23. The officiating throughout was noticeably biased in favor of the Wolfpack, and I'm doubly proud of the Knights for chopping wood and chopping through ref bullshit.

RU has reeled off seven victories in a row, including blowouts of Pitt and USF—the latter in Tampa. N.C. State put forth a great effort, and it might have been different if their incredibly annoying quarterback could've played the entire game ... but he couldn't, and the better team won.

They'll probably not make it back into the season-ending Top Twenty-Five, but they should. What a run! :techman:
