NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

I think it's hard to make an argument against Tebow for the Heisman, in that he's a more complete college player ... but equally difficult for him to win a quarterback award over the other two.

I'd buy that explanation. Each player has strengths that elevate them over the others. Each is a leader in his own right, though probably in different ways and means. Jsut for fun, I copied the passing and rushing stats for these three + Graham Harrell:
Code:
Player G Att Com Pct Yards Yds/Att Yds/G Int TD
McCoy, Colt 12 375 291 77.6 3445 9.2 287.1 7 32

Bradford, Sam 13 442 302 68.3 4464 10.1 343.4 6 48

Tebow, Tim 13 268 174 64.9 2515 9.4 193.5 2 28

Harrell, Graham 12 568 406 71.5 4747 8.4 395.6 7 41

Player G Rushes Yards Yds/Rush Yds/Game TD
McCoy, Colt 12 128 576 4.5 48.0 10

Bradford, Sam 13 40 65 1.6 5.0 5

Tebow, Tim 13 154 564 3.7 43.4 12

Harrell, Graham 12 35 -58 -1.7 -4.8 6

One thing that these stats don't show, is that McCoy was the leading rusher for Texas this year! That to me shows great leadership on his part, because they had a need and he filled it. Tebow was a heckuva leader for the Gators, when they needed it the most. Bradford and Harrell were great leaders but didn't really need to run the ball themselves, albeit for different reasons: Bradford had a great running game behind him and Harrell's offense didn't really need to run that much.

Thanks for asking the question-- I didn't know about any of this before I went diving into Wikipedia, and it's interesting. Turns out that even with a playoff system, Division I-AA can end up having a split national championship too if one of the non-participating schools ends up #1!

Interesting, I didn't know that. JMU and Richmond are both great teams this year, so it's hard to imagine any of the teams just mentioned sharing a title with them (although I do have a CAA bias).

Since most people don't follow I-AA, I figured I'd give an update. 3 time defending champions Appalachian State lost to Richmond.

Like last year, there are a lot of members of the CAA who made it (Delaware didn't make it this year, but Villanova did).

Today, Richmond plays Northern Iowa and James Madison plays Montana. Winners play in the championship.

Go, Grizzlies!

The State of Montana has some of the finest college football in the nation relative to the divisions in which they play, what with U of M and the country's best program, Carroll College of Helena, MT. The Fighting Saints are winners of five NAIA Division I national football championships this millennium, and play for a sixth soon.

It's my alma mater.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Tebow didn't win the Heisman. He's got the media hype machine running full throttle at the moment.

To be honest, I don't really have a horse in this race. I like what I've seen of each candidate. They lead their teams well on the field, with words and deeds. From what we've read - and just as importantly NOT read - they conduct themselves admirably off the field. All three have put up some ridiculous numbers statistics wise. Each has been there when their team needed them most.

If pressed for an answer I suppose I might go with McCoy because he seems to have done it Tebow-esque, runnign and passing.... but with a cast of supporting players that isn't quite as outstanding as Tebow's or Bradford's.

The Heisman race is only interesting if someone from your team is up for it, therefore I haven't been interested in a long time.

If I had a vote, I'd go for McCoy. Look at those stats!

Although, I think you could make a case for any of the top three. They've all had great years.

One stat that I would like to see become a standard is "yards after catch". That can color stats to a certain extent. If a team has a short passing game but with receivers that run 23-30 yards after they get the ball, the QB's passing stats can look a bit more impressive than they might actually be. That short passing game can affect stats like "efficiency" as well. Completing a 10 yard out would be an easier throw for the most part than say a 40 yd go route.

I'm sorry, but both McCoy and Bradford are more deserving this year than Tebow. If Tebow wins it this year, that's a crock.
they say that he might win because of geography. "the west is split and the east will vote for tebow" was something that I think JA Adande said earlier today

Spielman was saying kind of the same thing, how in one of ESPN's informal polls, the midwest area was really split between Bradford and McCoy, and everywhere else seemed dominantly for Tebow.

Here's an interesting and extremely pertinent observation concerning the Heisman Trophy race from ESPN's Mark Schlabach:

"Tebow's statistics are overshadowed by those of more prolific Big 12 passers such as McCoy, Bradford and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. But if the award were determined by strength of schedule, Tebow would be a landslide winner. In 13 games this season, Tebow faced eight of the country's top-30 defenses. In those eight games, Tebow completed 63 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. Nine of his 12 touchdown runs also came against top-30 defenses. Conversely, Bradford faced only two of the country's top-30 defenses, and nine that ranked 66th or worse. McCoy didn't face a defense ranked better than 65th and had his way with eight defenses ranked 86th or worse."

Things that make you go "hmm."

This is precisely why the pinball stats compiled by the Big 12 quarterbacks just haven't impressed me as much as they have many others.

Bradford will convince me after the fact if he shreds Florida's defense. Until then, Tebow's proven more and should grab the Heisman over the other two.

I'm convinced Bradford's gonna win, though. He's the sexy choice right now, because many are convinced Oklahoma's unstoppable.

They are ... until the evening of the 8th.

Then, it's Timmy Time.

And the winner of the 2008 Heisman Trophy is: Sam Bradford. Way to go. Kid deserved it. Heck, any one of them would have deserved it.
