Canadian Idol canceled for 2009

The faltering economy has now claimed CTV's Canadian Idol, a former competition-crushing ratings juggernaut that the network says will not be produced in 2009.
Citing a less-than-idyllic "economic climate," CTV said last night the amateur singing showcase will take a "rest" for the broadcast year.

Judge Zack Werner said he found out Monday that the former phenomenon is being put on hiatus.
"We were told that it's `resting,'" he said. "You can call that whatever you want. There was no official definition given to me of what the word `resting' means."
Werner said that despite the show's popularity he was always under the impression that its future was uncertain.
"We've always been led to believe by the powers that be that the show was always, despite its purported popularity, sink or swim, borderline. Would it be renewed? It was always a desperation thing."
Werner said Canadian Idol was the country's only real showcase of young music talent, and that it gave Canadians something to aspire to, teaching them that "if you hope and you dream and you try, you can do something more with your life, whether it's become a doctor or a basketball player."
Canadian Idol canceled for 2009

One word: YESSSSS!!!!:);):guffaw:

I have no idea what the ratings for it were, but I'm just surprised that the Canadian version would tank. One "problem" I guess is that they air in the summer, to avoid going up against the US version.

I'm also curious to see how their So You Think You Can Dance show did. Maybe they just want to go with one bloated reality TV contest.

Congratulations Canada! :bolian: I must say I do envy you for this. If only the idol shows would stop polluting the airwaves in the countries that I live in. :(

My friend actually auditioned for this. Didn't do too badly at first, either.

He tanked, though, when he couldn't remember our own national anthem!! :guffaw:

Thanks, everybody. Remember, this is only for all of next year-it just might come back in 2010.:(

Let's pray for CTV to keep it off of the air, and also for other networks in other countries to follow suit.

The rest of the article says that "Dance" is actually the higher rated show, although both come in at 1-2 for the network.

Maybe they want to "rest" "Idol" because of the contracts and all that and just churn out "Dance" as much as they can.

I wonder how many crew people and other staff are losing their jobs because of this, and why so many people here are thrilled about it.

Sorry, but I just don't get being happy about a show, any show, being cancelled. If you don't like it, just don't watch it.

Because it's a shitty show, and it does nothing for the music industry, or for the real musicians who have to spend months on the road eking out a (mostly) meager living playing gigs and traveling from place to place hoping that they will become more popular. If that rude cocksucker Simon Cowell really wanted to break new musical talent, he should be helping these people, not deluded idiots like William Hung sing glorified karaoke music.

Any advice how to get the American version cancelled, too?

2) Hope that ABC also has to cut back on staff, thereby forcing the cancellation of the American version.

I think you mean FOX
:p

Oh yeah, right. Thanks.
