What Well-Regarded Episode Makes You Dislike TNG the Most?

There is no episode that made me "dislike" TNG.

Having said that...
[...] I always regarded "Yesterday's Enterprise" as more of a top 20 episode and not a top 5.
Agreed. It's certainly a very good episode but it doesn't have the appeal for me that it appears to have for others. To each their own.

I don't mean the crappy episodes, e.g. "Shades of Gray," etc. I mean, which episodes which are generally well-regarded make you dislike this show?

For me, it's probably "Half a Life." Love the performances, even love the moral issue at the core, but ultimately, the episode ends up typifying the wishy-washy way Trek treated cultural differences. There's absolutely no good reason why Timicin should kill himself at the end of the episode, yet there he goes, and the episode seems to fall back on "well, that's just his culture!"

20 years on, a lot of things embarrass me when I watch TNG. First and foremost, it's this kind of weak and annoying moral stance that sticks with me.

If I weren't such a fan of DoS from his MASH run, I'd prolly point up this ep's flaws a little more. Like, why was apparently no knowledge on Starfleet's part that these people have this custom? And why are the other cultures in this and 'Suddenly Human' allowed to seem the injured party while the UFP is portrayed as strident? Picard wasn't trying to change the whole culture of either of these peoples, yet in both instances war parties were called and fleets raised to bring back one individual. Also, I'm sorry, the need for the ritual had long vanished. People who can try and fix a star can feed and care for a large population. I hope Lxwana started trouble for them the instant Timicin's celebration was done with. And wasn't the life of their SUN more important than almost anything? I know we hold certain things sacred and stubbornly, but if a solar apocalypse doesn't focus the mind, what will?

Back to 'Suddenly Human'. The signs that Jono's father was an abuser weren't just snooty elitist Humans assuming the worst about a war-like culture. The physical signs on Jono and the reasons offered up by his adoptive father were classic RL signs of abuse. If a teacher or counselor ignored them, they might be fired or worse. If they wanted to do an ep about Humans and assumptions, then they should have shown Jono with no signs of injury and Picard and crew just deciding that a peaceful culture was better. That was never their simple assumption. It may have been mixed in there, but think - if a parent said 'he falls down a lot' and 'likes to play hard with older children', wouldn't red flags go up? Jono's father was actually a good father and his de facto parent for all intents and purposes. But he had seized the boy under at least questionable circumstances, and repatriation had to be at least an option presented to Jono/Jeremiah. This wasn't Humans looking down at others. It was an awkward situation with bad information and residual mistrust from a war, coupled again with RL red flags for possible abuse.

I don't know how many fans 'The Cradle Will Fall' has, but the Aldeans infuriated me no end, and it seems they got off easy. A firm tongue lashing from Picard was needed, IMO, not just a firm glare when they realized he was right about the shields. And since the other kids were too young, I would have had Wes say what all kids know : The worst punishments await the kid who takes something after being told they can't have it, especially if it belonged to someone else. In general, TNG was too tolerant of 'desperate/dying' as a slate-cleaner for a people's actions. As a mitigator, sure. But too often it seemed a straight absolver.

Lastly, one I know to be a fave : The First Duty. Wes needed a downfall from his MS status, but the lessons were muddled IMO. Wes didn't do the right thing in the end-Picard was about to call him out, and no united front of cadets was going to survive the expert testimony of the crew that brought down the Borg. Also, Locarno, who had led the lying and implied defamation of a friend dead because of his leadership, somehow got to look good for keeping his word by accepting responsibility. Like Wes, he had no other choice. His bravado had him in a corner once the jig was up. I've heard it argued that this shows the ep's complexities, but as presented, Wes supposedly did the right thing and Locarno supposedly kept his word. At phaser-point, I find that not so impressive. Also, and this one is just me - I would have had a downfall ep for Wes involve not a hearing, which in almost all other ST is resolved in the character's favor, but one of his miracle solutions gone very wrong, and then him finding out a simple solution might have been the better choice, and guilting over it.

I definitely would not say HaL was "well regarded". In fact, lots of people I know use it as an example of Trek moralising and early 90's cringe inducing PC/psychobabble at its worst. In fact I was just talking to my partner about TNG the other night and he cited this episode. He watched it before he had studied psychology at university. He said after knowing quite a bit about psych, this ep just seemed REALLY dumb.

Anyway, for me it has to be "Masks". Just a really dumb excuse for Spiner to do lots of weird voices and use some columns and old stairs from the Paramount props department.

I am not exaggerating when I say I would have watched each ep about 5-8 times. "Masks" was once for me and that was MORE than enough.

Oh and most episodes that involve Worf and fucking Klingon Klaptrap. Hate him and hate his people. They have no honour....why in the name of FUCK are they revered by fans for this honour bullshit when they don't have any?!?

Awww...I liked that one. Would I call it a Top 20 episode by any means? No, but I found the visuals enjoyable and it wasn't that bad to watch, either. It was quite memorable to me, even years later.

I got the strong idea Worf was the only one with any kind of honor...but I can't stand Klingons the rest of the time. They're crass, unsophisticated, act like they don't have half a brain in their heads when you KNOW that any spacefaring society has GOT to require more intelligence than the show depicts them with.

(And that, my friends, is why I MUCH prefer the Cardassians. Yes, they can be nasty and conniving sometimes, but at least they don't make any pretense about it.)

If Timicin had stayed aboard the Enterprise, his people would have rejected all of his work and thus be wiped out when their star system's sun finally died. By submitting to tradition, we can only assume that his work would be accepted and carried on by others.

"All Good Things..." is over-long and rife with technobabble. I'll probably never suffer through watching it again... but it's apparently a big hit.

Half a life was horrible and just stupid stupid stupid!!! I don't think it's a well regarded episode though. Personally I pretend it was never made.

Who watches the watchers was great though, I don't really see it as PC, and I don't see it as the attack on religion that most people see it as, and I'm Christian lol, so I don't know, I love the episode.

As for the Klingons and the Cardassians, I don't love the Klingons, but prefer them way more than the Cardassians. At least with the Klingons, if they want to kill you they just tell it to your face directly. The Cardassians will pretend your be your best buddies until they backstab you right in the heart. No thank you.

Well, the episode for me seems to get positive ratings; however, it's a bit on the boring side for me....and not one of my favorites.

That episode is: 'Inner Light.'

I love TNG, next to TOS it's my favoritie ST series. But,yeah, there's a few episodes I could live without.

Neutral Zone - No need for the cryo-humans. They're just there to poke fun at the 1980s consumer culture and add nothing to the episode. The Romulans-- the assumed threat of the episode-- weren't pulled off very well. Their posturing feel more like something a Klingon would say, and less like the Romulans.

Best of Both Worlds - Part 1 -- Good episode for the most part, but the bit with Guinan being the one that gets Will Riker to grow a pair and ditch his "living in Picard's shadow" whining just feels taked on and makes Riker look bad.

I Borg -- The only saving grace in the episode is Stewart's Locutus moment in the ready-room. He sold that scene, and I thought for a moment that Locutus had returned.

The Big Goodbye -- I'm sorry, it's just a bad episode, IMO. Didn't care about the holodeck characters, the sheliak threat is never fully realized; "oooh they'll do something to the captain if he screws up his greeting." And? you never fee like Picard was in any real danger.

"Masks"....ugh, what a piece o' crap that one was. And Spiner just basically phoned it in, using a stupid funny voice through most of it.
Utter garbage.

Frankly, I never liked most of the Spiner-centric episodes. Far to often he comes off as just doing schitck. With one exception (Playing Soonge) he doesn't do the whole "One actor playing multiple characters" bit very well.

There's a few that I think *might* be considered well-regarded that I didn't care for, but it didn't make me stop liking TNG.

The ones that *almost* did (because I think they are really overrated turds that make Spock's Brain look like Citizen Cane) are:

1. Ethics
2. The Inner Light
3. Night Terrors
4. The Loss
5. The Drumhead
6. The Outcast
7. Cause and Effect
8. The Perfect Mate
9. RASCALS!!!! -- a real pukefest!
10. Lessons
11. The Game
12. Lower Drecks (Decks)

"Lower Decks" would be my pick. It's not like they even picked regular background players and examined them, except Ogawa. It's just a bunch of nobodies we'll never see again...and the poor Bajoran girl who was given a second chance only to die (EU probably says otherwise).

The Outcast was boring. Half a Life was boring. Many blatant message episodes were bit trite because of the episodic nature of the show meant that it was a member of the crew going through the motions of a morality play. Sometimes it was worse than that, where the guest star was the one going through it...the crew becomes supporting players and what you have is "The Love Boat" in space, that's when b-plots come in handy...not that it helps The Outrageous Okana much.

Well put MJP!

first, i would like to rebut some of the criticism of I, Borg and Darmok.
these are two of my favorite episodes because they are lighthearted and a bit humorous. I have a feeling that some of the animosity stems from their popularity.

Secondly, Relics is quite possibly one of the least interesting, most predictable and unjustified episodes. a lot of people like it when characters are brought back, i think it can be fun, but that episode was so forced.

"All Good Things..." is over-long and rife with technobabble. I'll probably never suffer through watching it again... but it's apparently a big hit.

A better finale than DS9's and VOY's, but a lame carbon-copy riff on Slaughter House Five. While I enjoyed the episode, it wasn't all that and a bag of chips. The best part of the episode is when Q calls Picard out in the trail scene.

Seven years ago I said we'd be watching you, and we have been. Hoping that your ape-like brains would demonstrate some growth, give some indication that your minds have room for expansion. But what have we seen instead? You... worrying about Commander Riker's career? Listening to Counselor Troi's pedantic psychobabble? Indulging Data in his witless exploration of humanity?

Kinda summed up some of the worse parts of TNG.

"All Good Things"

Why is it a good idea to wrap up the seven year story of seven character with a rest button episode that impacted one character. I loved everything with Q, great performance, and a nice final scene. This is not a worthy series finale. Maybe an excellent February sweeps episode.

Pegasus. ``Admiral Prescott, how could you dare develop an illegal cloaking device that threatens the stability of the quadrant because you felt it inconvenient for the Federation to not have one! Now, LaForge, quick, hook up the illegal cloaking device so we can use to get out of this pesky asteroid!''
