Who were those Klingons??

This is such a common question I'm sure it's already been asked, however, I can't find it, so... In "Trouble with Tribbles" was it ever explained who those Klingons were. In the DS-9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" when questioned by the Chief, Bashir and Odo, Warf tell them it is an issue that Klingons do not discuss with outsiders. Was it ever explained in any greater detail, even the a book??

That was a reference to why Klingons in TOS didn't have forehead ridges. It was answered in the Enterprise "Augments" mini arc (with Brent Spiner) of 3 episodes (Borderland, Cold Station 12, The Augments) where ridgeless Klingons are explained as the result of botched genetic engineering, basically.

Not quite.

That arc deals with human Augments. The Klingons then try to reproduce Dr. Arik Soong's work in the "Affliction"/"Divergence" two parter later that season.

^^ Oops, you're right. I haven't seen any Enterprise episodes more than once, which was awhile ago. But really all 5 episodes should be seen. IIRC, you don't really need to see any of the episodes inbetween to understand what's going on.

While I think it was a bit much to devote an entire two-parter to giving the final word on the subject, the explanation offered in "Affliction/Divergence" was elegant and well-conceived. And the episodes were pretty entertaining as well.

If I had written that page it would contain 2 words: makeup change.

Am I the only one who thinks Enterprise's "explanation" for the forehead ridges makes no fucking sense?

It is far too messed up and doesn't explain anything..and it also means that, in a weird way, they might all be related to Khan...go figure

Well basically Manny Coto believed the fans needed a multi-episode arc to explain that in the 1960's, they just didn't have the budget for elaborate Klingon headpieces.

Thankfully, by the time his explanation aired, few were watching.

I was glad for an explanation for something many fans had questioned for 20 years. It was far more interesting than learning that Jonathan Archer played . . . well, far more interesting than anything about Jonathan Archer. It may even be more interesting than learning other universe Kirk stole Corvettes and got into bar fights while copping a feel from Uhura and hanging out with a pre-flashing Christopher Pike.

Granted, the forehead issue didn't NEED explaining, but I thought Affliction/Divergence was a creative way of doing it. Frankly, it was "Tribble-ations" which brought the whole issue to the fore to begin with.

Trials and Tribblelations' reference was just a nice joke. A nod to an old episode and peculiarity of TOS. But rather than leave it at that, Coto couldn't leave well enough alone, and indulged in fanboyishness.

I honestly don't know how anyone can refer to the Enterprise "explanation" for the forehead difference as either elegant, or creative. Read the Ex Astris Scientia link posted above. There is a TON of rationalization you have to do for it to make any sense. Klingons were segregated according to their foreheads? Kor got plastic surgery to add the forehead ridges? Dr. Bashir had no knowledge of the existence of smooth-forehead Klingons? Sure, you CAN explain it all away if you try hard enough, but that sure doesn't make it "elegant".

Not at all. The point when they started making episodes to address changes in make up was the point when I knew Star Trek was dead in the water.

Well in all fairness, at least Berman was listening to the fans at this point. There was a vocal minority of canon nazis screaming foul play because the ENT klingons looked like TNG klingons

Much like everything on that show.

I would have loved if the DS9 ep had just ignored it, acted as though those Klingon's had forehead ridges, maybe ever have word tell a flat head Klingon he had a nice ridgy head :D
