When getting to know a girl I always let THEM choose the first bottle of wine...
I play this game sometimes too. Last but one played outside the box, and picked a white rioja - interesting choice (I was going to pick it myself if I'd been choosing). And funnily enough, it reflected her personality a bit too!
A little bit warped, then?
White Rioja is such a strange beast. Viura (or Macabeo when making Cava) is such a fresh, vibrant grape it never ceases to bemuse me when the daft winemakers swamp the poor thing in fat American oak. The grape rarely copes, sadly. I've had very few good white Rioja's thanks to the oak-intrusion. If I want a good, SAFE, central Spanish white I always go Verdejo. Rather like a cross between a Sauvignon Blanc and a ripe (but dry) Loire Chenin Blanc. And not a hint of oak in sight usually.
Still, letting the lady choose - always an interesting test, whether they "succeed" or not
Hugo - Is slowly turning BACK into a wine snob... sorry for the second quick post.
