The Official Christmas Alcohol Thread

Come on Holdfast, you must have picked up something for Christmas by now...

I haven't!

I'm planning on going wine shopping on Friday or Saturday this week. I will report back... :D

If I don't spot anything I like the look of, I'll probably open a few of my existing bottles rather than get anything new. Especially since some of them really need drinking ASAP anyway. There's several bottles of 2000 Chanoine champagne, a bottle or so of 2001 Pagodes de Cos and a whole range of whites (some nice Sancerre and some pretty good 1er Cru burgundies) that need drinking up. Then after having depleted my stock a little, I'll have a proper excuse to go shopping again.

What I really need is a killer red or two for Christmas Day itself. Might open a 1990 Soutard but I not convinced it will pair all that well. The food's going to overwhelm it and I won't be able to appreciate it I think. I was half-thinking about opening a 2004 Cantina di Soave Amarone della Valpolicella Rocca Alata instead. That might work pretty well if it's ready for drinking now.

2007 Terredora Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco (£10.99) - another italian white, another almost unheard of grape variety, this time Caprettona grown on the slopes of Mt Vesuvius. Really looking forward to the minerality of this and its austerity. Again, hopefully a winner.

This sounds very interesting indeed!

2007 Weingut Johann Donabaum Johann Gruner Veltliner Wachau

I think I still have a bottle of 2004 Loimer lying around. Need to drink that soon.

1996 Henriot (£48.99)... on Christmas morning with some eggs benedict and whilst opening presents. Simply can not wait.

I want Christmas morning at your place!

When getting to know a girl I always let THEM choose the first bottle of wine...

I play this game sometimes too. Last but one played outside the box, and picked a white rioja - interesting choice (I was going to pick it myself if I'd been choosing). And funnily enough, it reflected her personality a bit too!

Oh my... Just arriving at home after purchasing a case and a half (18 bottles) of wine for the rack.

Oh my.

I'm hosting another wine tasting at my house Saturday evening. Holdfast, Hugo.. care to take an international flight at the last moment and attend? :)

The official beverage's of Yul(in my family, anyway)!

Ok... since my wine purchases seem to keep getting overlooked.

I also bought Dalmore. The Dalmore. Any fans?

Well, you told us you bought 18 bottles, but WHICH 18 bottles, that's information still to be provided.

I don't fly 8000 miles for a tasting and not know what's on the table. 50 miles is my maximum limit for a blind. Unless the invitation says has the words "First Growth" in them ;)

I must admit, when it comes to the whisky I'm a bit of a wimp. I appreciate the density and richness of a good Islay, but my palate simply can not cope after the first sip of dark peat. I prefer a floral, fruity lowlands style. The simplest I enjoy is a Glenlivet. Rustic little number for all year 'round.

I opened the sherry last night. Tastey little Fino, perhaps a little low on acidity, but more than made up for by its complexity of wood and yellow fruits. Shame I couldn't find a Manzanilla I liked the look of. I like opening the bottle on a crisp winters' eve to sniff, and to take in a saltiness that reminds me of warm foreign seas.

Oh, and Holdfast - the Lacrima is from Oddbins. It won't last long, the company's parcel never does!

Hugo - thought about dipping his toe back into the "Beer" thread to factually correct Tachyon Shield, but stopped himself just was as he was writing out part of his lecture about beer from 5 years ago. The facts won't change a thing...

A little bit warped, then? ;)

White Rioja is such a strange beast. Viura (or Macabeo when making Cava) is such a fresh, vibrant grape it never ceases to bemuse me when the daft winemakers swamp the poor thing in fat American oak. The grape rarely copes, sadly. I've had very few good white Rioja's thanks to the oak-intrusion. If I want a good, SAFE, central Spanish white I always go Verdejo. Rather like a cross between a Sauvignon Blanc and a ripe (but dry) Loire Chenin Blanc. And not a hint of oak in sight usually.

Still, letting the lady choose - always an interesting test, whether they "succeed" or not ;)

Hugo - Is slowly turning BACK into a wine snob... sorry for the second quick post.

As the joke goes:

"So we already know you're a hooker, now we're just haggling over the price." :D

Wise decision!

(I only just restrained myself!)

Very pleasant to look at with a nice nose. Thoughtful, but ultimately a little too intellectual and distant and a bit of a dodgy finish. ;)

White Rioja is such a strange beast.

I have a couple of bottles of 96 Lopez di Heredia Crianza Gravonia. It's pretty good stuff, but definitely more of an intellectual wine than an emotional one.

You're right, however, you overlooked my first post in this thread.

It will take some time to put together a post of 18 bottles. Will work on that over the next 24 hours.

I haven't purchased any alcohol this holiday season, but I have received a most wonderful bottle of homemade Irish cream.

Soooo tasty and fattening and indrunkenating.

So a colleague of mine just gave me a nice bottle of Taittinger Brut La Francaise in appreciation of the work we did together on a recent conference.

The fact that it's my birthday makes it double sweet! :)

I've been into Singleton scotch lately and it's very good. Only $40 a bottle but it tastes better than some I've had almost twice that cost. I'll also be hitting some gin. I don't have a favorite brand yet. But my scotch and some Jameson always makes my holidays warm!
