Absinthe legality confirmation needed

I had this one night, the Okanagan Absinthe, and had some pretty severe memory blackouts and woke up top of my bed with all my clothes on and no idea how I got there.

Good times!

You did notice that stuff is 120 proof, right?

I haven't had anything that dramatic happen. Perhaps because I never have more than a glass or two at a time.

But I have had some pretty strange and vivid dreams after drinking absinthe--including one lucid dream.

Hey, I was just trying to understand your mindset. You've explained your motivation, although I don't fully understand the rationale for it.

Mr Awe

A friend once tried to make his own Absinthe by steeping Pernod through Artemisia wormwood.

It was not a successful experiment taste-wise, but the alcohol did at least turn sort of yellow-green! :D

Better than waking up with all of your clothes off. Maybe.

I wonder if drinking the stuff makes you see Kylie in a skimpy green outfit...

I know they sell it over here, but I'm not sure it's the "real" stuff.

According to Absinthe Classics, "absinthe with less than 35mg/l of thujone is legal throughout the EU, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe."

In Canada, by contrast, absinthe must contain 10mg/l or less of thujone. :(

But it's all "real," unless it's some kind of Czech knockoff--though of course, some brands are better than others.

The most I ever got out of the stuff was some weird dreams.

You're not supposed to drink it straight. You're supposed to pour three parts chilled water into each part absinthe over a cube of sugar, resulting in the characteristic "louche."

 What?!?

I thought you were supposed to take it rectally.

You mean--I've had no idea how to drink it properly, all this time?

:shifty:

I buy my absinthe online from a British company called Absinthe Classics.

At present, due to "problematic customs clearances," they do not import absinthe into Canada. The only brand they sell to Canadians, Taboo, is made in Canada by Okanagan Distillers of BC. (This is the stuff I drink.)

Couldn't be too good a time if your clothes were still on.

According to that Wikipedia page, New Zealand has some local authorities that have banned Absinthe. It states:
Although the substance is not banned at national level, some local authorities have banned it. The latest is Mataura in Southland. The ban came in August 2008 after several issues of misuse drew public and police attention. One incident resulted in breathing difficulties and hospitalization of a 17 year old caused by alcohol poisoning.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#cite_note-69The particular brand of absinthe that caused these effects contained 89.9% vol. alc.
Well, no shit, son! 90% alcohol may cause alcohol poisoning if you're not careful, so let's ban the stuff!

On a lighter note, a mate of mine used to water down his 80% absinthe with 40% vodka. I'm sure it made sense in his drunken mind, but I assure you it still tasted like ass
