Warp drive oxymoron

Ezri II

Captain
Have been debating warp drive. In my judgment you have to go much faster if warp drive can get you around the universe. Basic principle, warp 1 is the speed of light and warp 2 is twice the speed of light. Fine, as fast as any ship can go is almost the speed of warp 10. In that case, if you want to go just 10 light years it would take a year to get there.
Hold on, Vulcan is less than twenty light years from Earth and they are very close. But, we can get there in like four days. The math does not add up folks …..

Thats ok teckkerguy. But, some reason I think warp speed and how fast we go are off if we really think of speed and a 60 minute tv show.

Well they actually do have it all worked out.
There have been times where they havn't "stuck to the rules"
but in general the speeds have been worked out to make sense.

True, read the article but even with Picard ship, it would take 3 days to get to the next star from Earth. Have let to see a Star Trek show take more then a few days their time within a 60 minute show.

Would take three days if they were doing maybe warp 1 or something.

All they have to do is increase speed and they could be there in a matter of days or hours.

Well ... since the 1960's the speed of warp drive is increasing just to fit in better with the storyline.

You are right. They did change the scale.
But in the 60's the writing hadn't caught up to
the scale of space they were dealing with.

By the time the movies and TNG came around
they revised it to make more sense when
traveling the distances they were in the show.

So yes, it was a way to fit the story, but it
also made more practical sense. And I don't
think they've messed with the scale since
they altered it for TNG.

So for now, the TNG scales we have now
are the "real" ones.

Think they understand the problem. Think slip stream is going to open up a new field of speed. Warp drive was a problem with Voyager and it did undermine the idea of warp drive. What was there problem, 70,000 light years and at max warp it would take 70 years. Even if we go at warp 10, that is 10 thousand light years.

With Archer, warp 5 and 5,000 light years. Ok, but he was here a number of days and there a number of days. Gee, some reason the Great Exspance, and our federation cold war enemies so so close. Makes you ask were our friends are ...

Warp drive will probably remain a constant from here on out.

Slipstream will have it's own scale since it's a different form of propulsion.

And warp 10 would not have been attainable(In most normal settings)
as it takes infinite energy to reach.

I think the idea in Enteprise was that the Expanse enemies are actually
part of the Federation later, so their proximity isn't a huge issue.
However having the Klingons and Romulans so close in the ENT era would
take a bit of wangling.

Having them so close .... not that good. Oh ya, we must have won the war and just added it. Na ... The Vulcans and the little blue guys would want it. Now I understood why Enterprise was poor. Would be nice to bump into Trill or a nice place that are our long term friends. Oh well ...

Well none of the shows are perfect,
sometimes certain liberties are taken
for the sake of story, that's for sure.

I do recognize ENT's shortcomings,
but I still very much enjoyed watching it.
I guess for me it's not all about the maps
and continuity as it is having good
adventure in a Star Trek setting. :)

Ya ... all shows take liberty with warp drive. Then again, when you see Hoshi and T'Pol given each other a rub down in the decom chamber who cares about warp speed. Anyway back to warp drive not the (you know).

Haha very true.

In the end, the technical side is great fun to know,
but it's still just a tv show and you either like it or you don't.

The "Trek Tech" section of the board is also very good
for discussions on warp drive and such. :bolian:

It is great fun for the geeks in us all. But, if we really get to geeky with the star trek universe we really lose the point. Its science fiction, not a Steven Hawkings tv show. Now, do we want to see someone talk like Steven Hawkings (Data) or watch two women oil each other up on Enterprise (Hoshi and T'Pol). True, we could have Data talk about Warp Drive and Picard and Data with babyoil (lets not go there).
