Would you turn in a family member?

Would you turn in a family member who committed a serious crime?

I can't tell you how many times I've watched cases on the news where family went absolutely wild to protect family members accused of a heinous crime, even when the evidence against them is overwhelming...sometimes when they even KNOW something about the crime or ought to. That's something I find absolutely maddening. Surely the duty of justice is more important?

So if you had a family member who'd committed a crime that could carry a stiff penalty, and you knew about it or strongly suspected it...would YOU turn them in?

Am I the only cold-blooded person here who would do it? :cardie:

Likely, I wouldn't turn them in. I wouldn't hide them either, unless I felt they were innocent or justified in what they did.

If it's certain they actually did it? Yes.
I'm under the assumption that when you say heinous crime, you mean murder and similar crimes. If I was certain, then yes, I would absolutely turn that family member in to the police.

J.

Last option. Depends on what they did. Did they not come to a full stop at a stop sign? I donm't think anyone here can say they've never done that at least once.

Killed a person? If it's OJ, Michael Jackson, Ahmadinejad, or somebody who deserves it, then I can life with that. In fact, I'll live better knowing people like that are gone.

But I'd want no exact knowledge of the events, do't want to be an aliby, and I don't want to hide them.

Depends what they did, and if it hurt anybody or not. I could not let them get away with harming somebody.

I had one family member that was in a gang, and I avoided him. Luckily, he has since cleaned up his life, but during that time, had he killed someone (the second worst crime in my opinion) and come to me, I likely would have asked him to leave and go elsewhere... I honestly can't say I would call the cops and wait for the cops to get to my home... partly out of the safety of my own family.

Yes, if the crime was very serious and it meant that my family member was a danger to society I would turn him in.

I think that David Kaczynski should be praised for informing the authorities that be believed that his brother was the Unabomber.

Absolutely.

One thing I was always taught by my parents.

Do NOT PROTECT family members!

If anything, hold the members of your family to a higher standard.

What's the first worst crime?

I would turn in a family member if they hurt or murdered someone.

Raping a child. I honestly feel that should be a guaranteed death penalty.
I would turn in a family member if they hurt or murdered someone.
I am surprised at the amount of people that would turn them in... I can get not helping them, but to turn them in... I think it's a situation that one has to be in to understand better
No one that I know of. Besides, most of us are too poor to own a gun.

I'd wager that more poor people have guns than wealthy ones do.
I doubt that. The truly wealthy don't carry the guns themselves... they hire body guards. But to me, that's the same as them carrying the guns themselves.

I would wager that the poor use their guns more... but I don't think there are more poor people that have guns.

You can hold them to a higher standard... but if anything, they failed at a lower level... :D

Would people be willing to put their family at risk by having a potential police stand off at your house?

If I was certain, I'd turn them in without hesitation. I think it's a very strange idea that people close to me are somehow less responsible for obeying the law, and if anything would expect more of them in that regard, as they would of me.

If I thought anyone in my family committed murder or something of that ilk, you bet your ASS I'd turn them in.

If it was something less serious, like, say embezzlement--- I don't know if I'd turn them in or not. I sure as hell wouldn't hide them or help them in any way, but I'm not sure if I would ring the cops right up and tell where they were.

I guess it depends on the family member.

My loser-sister? Hell, yeah. She's a self-centered, bi-polar addict who has done nothing but use and abuse people her whole life. She's had this unbelievable sense of entitlement for as long as I can remember, and only values people for what they can get for her. She's a horrible sister, an ungrateful daughter, and an unreliable mother. I'd turn her ass in one second, because I'd know she'd have no remorse, and no excuse other than her own greed.

My other sister? I don't know. Her family is seriously in debt, with two kids and one on the way, and she suffers from anxiety and depression. She's worked hard her whole life and has never gotten so much as a speeding ticket. But I've watched her turn into a Stepford wife to a man who just doesn't seem to care. I would understand if she just snapped and stole some money. I'd encourage her to take it back or turn herself in. But I don't think I'd call the cops on her.

With the exception of my wife and my kid-- and even them if we're talking rape or murder, yeppers. Outside those two, I have no love or loyalty to any of my family and would gladly sell them down the river; hell, I'd probably be standing outside laughing as the cops dragged them off in cuffs.
