What is the furthest you have been from home?

Venice, California isn't a well known town, Teya.Just checked my atlas. The Greater Los Angeles area map only shows a Venice Blvd. between a couple of towns I've heard of, Santa Monica and Culver City.

The city of Clarence, which is technically the city I live in, isn't on the distant calculator either. However, as I knew that Clarence is one of the three cities that make up Greater Hobart, I had no problem knowing that I should should use Hobart instead.

I think most people can work out which city or town to put into the distant calculator and if they have to add a few more miles to it than it is easy for them to do so.

I'm guessing Tokyo is further than LA or SF from me. Pretty sure I haven't been any further away than that.

I have a feeling that these distances are all on the high side. It looks like the chart they're using is a mercator projection, and they're probably using rhumb lines instead of great circle routes.

Wikipedia disagrees with you.

Most maps won't show Venice as distinct from Los Angeles. But it's most definitely one of the best-known areas in Los Angeles, and the most visited stretch of beach in Southern California--perhaps the state.

Of course, no one has mentioned that Boston, MA didn't register with that distance finder, either... :p

Most maps don't show it as distinct because it isn't distinct from LA. :P And Boston came up just fine on the distance finder. It gives you a choice of several Bostons all over the world to choose from even.

teya, the U.S. cities are alphabetized by city and country, not city and state, so you may not have looked down far enough. Look where you'd find "Boston, United States".

Venice, CA I couldn't find, but the distance from Boston to Santa Monica is 2603 miles.

9650.75 miles from Fairfax, VA to Singapore.

However, at the time I visited Singapore, "home" was Massachusetts.

Okay, you win. :p I guess the longest distance a person can do is around 12,000.
I got close with 11,561.35 miles from England to New Zealand. (Actually it was slightly more as at the time I was living in Scotland. :p)

According to the distant calculator I posted Glasgow to Dunedin, NZ is 11703.45 miles.

Fascinating. I checked, and using a great circle route on a WGS 84 datum that's correct. I should have given them more credit.

And the largest distance possible would be about 12367.5 miles.

Anybody got any suggestions about start and end points for this longest journey?

They would both have to be on the equator and be separated by 180 degrees, or 10800 nautical miles.

Okay, a little bit of playing with google earth and so far I have Bogota, Colombia to Jakarta, Indonesia working out at 12302 miles.
