Are you planning on seeing the film in IMAX??

Re: IMAX!

I don't know if I will or not. It is not being shown in true IMAX but in what is called IMAX DMR which creates a 70 mm print without actually being filmed in an official IMAX camera.

The differences are, a slightly larger, (but not clearer) image, it won't fill screen like true IMAX does, and better sound. Imo the difference does not justify the $5 - $7 higher ticket price.

That said, if after the first screening I like the film immensely, I might see it in IMAX to help support it financially.

I think it justifies the higher price. I've seen probably half a dozen films in this way and it's always a better experience than the standard theatre. $5-7 more? I would pay it I suppose but where the fuck do you get those prices? It's like $2 more here.

Re: IMAX!

Where the fuck are you that they are apparently so reasonable?

Prices are not "standardized" everywhere, they vary by areas.

Prices around here are: At AMC/Regal full ticket price $8, IMAX FTP $15.

if this film was being made specifically for imax i would go. but otherwise no. i saw superman returns on imax and wasnt very impressed. the sound was great, but the film quality itself was very grainy.

Sorry, I feel whatever the ticket cost is, is reasonable and I'll pay it. It's to see a movie.

And here it's about $9 + change and IMAX is about $11 + change.

I know they vary by area, I used to work at Regal. But you spoke of it like it was some ridiculous price.

It's about $3-4 more in Chicago but the theatre at IMAX Navy Pier charges $25 for parking! I'll go to the suburban theatre instead where parking is free.

I think the news that it will be shown in IMAX theatres is a clear indication that Shatner is most definitely in the film! His head won't fit on a normal-sized screen...

That may well have been because Superman Returns was shot on an HD digital camera with less resolution than a standard 35mm film--blowing it up to IMAX size would expose the lesser resolution and make that film a less than ideal choice for IMAX presentation.

If the new Trek film is shot on 35mm film, then an IMAX presentation may be quite nice. If it is an HD digital camera, then an IMAX version may be visually disappointing to some.

$15, (full price) for a non IMAX film is ridiculous imo. It ain't fair to charge the full IMAX price for something that isn't full IMAX. $10 for IMAX-DMR would be more fair.

Too much of a pain to get to an IMAX theatre the first week. Maybe a month or so after the opening. The over the building shots in Dark Knight really freaked me out. I'm sure some of the battle scenes will be pretty cool in IMAX.

Well that's your opinion. I'd rather a have a couple fewer sodas for a month or something and get whatever the best experience available is.

I kind of wonder why they didn't shoot parts of this in IMAX. I would have seen it in IMAX and made sure I didn't show up and try to buy a ticket the day of, like I did foolishly with Batman.

But from what I'm hearing, all it is is a bigger screen and better sound for a normal movie. I can only observe so much screen, and can only appreciate so much sound, so no, I wouldn't see it in an IMAX

I miss drive ins... was like seeing a life size Enterprise - D come crashing down...

As for sound though, it's not just about more powerful sound, the IMAX has I believe 7 channels of sound. The more channels you get the more clarity, and the closer to real you get.

So does the sound quality make you seem like you're on the bridge yourself? Voices coming from different directions and such? Because if it's just sound clarity, hearing someone's fingers tap more clearly on a control panel, or gaining a better appreciation of the pitch of a red alert klaxon doesn't seem worth it to me.

But then again, I've never seen an IMAX movie. Showed up for The Dark Knight on opening day, and the IMAXes were sold out.

If IMAX was the only big screen around, I might see it there, but I plan to The Empire Leicester Square (the venue for the UK premiere). Expensive, but the screen is big (not IMAX big, but big), and the sound may even be better there. That's where all the geeks will be seeing it too :)

Now if the movie had been shot with IMAX cameras, like TDK, I'd be there in a second. I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory blown-up to IMAX-DMR, which was cool, but not something I'd spend £13 to experience again now that I've seen real IMAX footage.

A poster above was concered that the film would be cut because of a 2-hour limit (as Episode II was) This isn't a problem anymore, as IMAX can now handle films up to 2.5 hours.

It's a 2-hour drive, which for me is a little much to see a movie. And I don't really speak German either, which makes the whole thing even more complicated.

But I am VERY impressed with your net-fu. :techman:
I managed to hit on it pretty quickly. I wasn't sure about how easy it was to get around (trains, etc.) but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. :techman:

Not sure whether any other might be closer, but just in case, here's a list I'll presume is reasonably current:
