Majel Barrett-Roddenberry To Play Computer Voice

This is about as close to Gene's approval we can get, so I'm happy.

Oh, and this is very cool in any case. Make that two original cast members on board.

Yay! Again more proof that, while they will be raping our childhoods, there will at least be some cuddling afterwards.

That could easily have been a sample lifted directly from TOS.

According to Majel herself, there'd be more paperwork and cost to do that (in Hollywood) than to actually bring her into the recording studio and do a new delivery. She supposedly did all-new deliveries of "Last time, on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'...", even if not needed as the computer voice in an episode.

It also takes her considerable effort to "get" the voice each session. Voice work is one of those magical Hollywood things that is always underrated and under-appreciated.

I've been expecting a Majel cast addition since Day #1. Great news.

This is very true. Getting the voice in the right groove, especially after significant time away from it, can be tricky. I know of some voice actors who keep detailed notebooks on the character voices they do -- the vocal mechanics involved, head voice or throat voice, register, diction, etc. -- all of the little things which make that character voice unique and distinct from any of the others. Not everyone uses such record-keeping, but those who do find it saves them a lot of time getting back to the character.

When I shut down my PC, I have a clip of her saying "one minute to auto destruct." :)
Heh...my desktop has all TNG chirps and whirrs and beeps for acknowledgements. When you empty the recycle bin, the TNG warp sound effect (which sounds like a buildup and explosion) goes off.

On boot up she says "All systems are functioning normally" and my shut down sound is "System off-line in 30 seconds" with a red alert klaxon in the background.

I don't use the desktop hardly at all anymore and even though I have all those files, I doubt I'll be using them on the laptop...I prefer no sounds at all these days.

Doesn't matter either way. I doubt I could really tell who was doing the voice. I'm just gald JJ didn't go with the Windows Fetch-Dog or the Paperclip.

Majel doing the voice of the computer is a great sentimental choice. Something that didn't have to be done at all. But they did it. Good for them.

(Off thread, I use the sound of a TOS photon topedo firing to empty my recycling bin. The computer starts with the sound of the TOS transporter. There are other beeps and buzzes from the shows along the way. Although Marvin the Martian's, "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom," shuts down my PC.)

On the plus side, it's a nice nod to the original series.

On the negative side, she's kind of an annnoying bitch, so naturally I want her to suffer. :p
