Idea for a 'Galaxy Quest' sequel (relevant to ST:XI)

Here's an idea for a Galaxy Quest sequel that can be made after Star Trek (XI) comes out...

...A big-time hollywood producer/director wants to make a big-budget film based on the old 'Galaxy Quest' TV show. However he re-casts young actors for all of the major roles -- except for Alexandar Dane as "old" Dr. Lazarus, who grudgingly agrees to reprise his role because he needs the money.

Of course, Jason Nesmith is very pissed-off that he hasn't been included in the cast of this new film -- and makes it no mystery to his fans how he feels about the snub. However, Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Fred Kwan and the others are nevertheless hired on as "technical advisors" for the film -- basically just to appease them and to honor some contractual clause that they all have.

We meet the new hot, young, good-looking actors playing "Young Taggart" and "Young Gwen" and find them to be stereotypical young Hollywood "beautiful people" types -- and we meet the actor playing "Young Dr. Lazarus", who is actually a lot like a young Alexander Dane, and is a very capable young actor.

Of course, during filming of the new movie, the Thermians come back to Earth looking for help from "Old Captain Taggart" and crew to save the galaxy from some huge threat. So Jason, Gwen, Alexander, and the rest of the old cast -- joined by the actors playing "Young Taggart", "Young Tawny Madison", "Young Lazarus", and the producer/director -- must go into space to help the Thermians fight this new threat.

Hilarity ensues.

Sub-plots could include Alexander Dane deciding to become a mentor to the young actor playing young Lazarus; the growth of the "beautiful people" actors into people with a bit more maturity; and the realization by the director that he needs to include ALL of the "old cast" in his new film. Maybe they could also bring back that guy from the "Mac vs. PC" commercials to reprise his role as the fan, Brandon.

Yeah -- I know it needs works, but it's a start.

I don't mean this to sound like a sarcastic backhanded slap at Abrams' Star Trek film -- for instance, I really don't think Shatner needs to be a part of Abrams' film....but I'm (half) serious about this Galaxy Quest idea.

Ha...that can work. I doubt they'd do a follow-up, but that idea can work. The only thing that would dump on it completely is if Trek XI flops. If that is the case, I am sure Trek XI would just become a footnote in Trek history (like the Holiday Special is for Star Wars history).

I would think having a GQ movie dealing with the "old" crew facing the stars of a TNG-like spin-off could be a substitute.

I'd watch that, or something like it. GQ was pretty good, and didn't someone say Tim Allen is up for a second film?

Yeah you need a couple of fans to go. They can travel to the alien planet and one (he should be wearing the same outfit that Chekov did in ST3 - the little pilgrim one) can go into a wild rage when he sees that the Protector II was built on the planet, behind him, the other fan can go "meh!, it's a TV show" while snorting coke off an alien's triple breasts (he should act and sound like pouchie from the simpsons and also have a backward cap).

Aw Ya. I was thinking this week that they need another GQ. they've been playing it on tv. I would love to See another one. Time to pitch that story line to a producer!

So who do we cast in the roles as the younguns?

Jason Nesmith: Michael Rosenbaum
Gwen DeMarco: Katee Sackhoff
Alexander Dane: Zachary Quinto :rommie: just kidding, James Callis
Fred Kwan: Ken Leung (isn't he supposed to be Asian anyway?)
Guy Fleegman: Bret Harrison

Would Guy even get to be recast since he didn't join until the continuation series? I could see Guy alternating between being happy and complaining that his character wasn't recast.

Then again, with a recast, he could serve as the Chekov syndrome.

Ha...another thought, what if they took it a step further and threw a nod to BSG with recasting one of the characters with an actor of the opposite gender. The best candidate I can think of would be the black guy (I can't think of the actor's name - the one who was a kid on the "original show").

The new cast should be abducted by mistake... and the old guys have to go save their asses.

Oh, and Guy should be eliminated in the reboot... "But I'm GUY! From episode 86!! I'M CANON!!!"

I think this would be hillarious, but they've got to do ONE thing...

Take the design of the "Protector" (the ship in the original Galaxy Quest movie), and alter it in bizarre ways, like adding what look like giant flower petals to the ends of its "wings" or around the center section of the ship, making the "wings" curve up or down, instead of being completely horizontal to each other, whatever. Then depict fans screaming bloody murder about it being changed.

Yes, I'm a "change NOTHING!!!" Trek fan, but I still have a sense of humor.

That's a WONDERFUL idea! Much of Guy's humor from the original was that he knew things that are common knowledge to fanboys, like the fate of most red shirts. Now that this attention starved sleazeball is on the show, and his part gets eliminated because of something like that, there would be a TON of humor for the writers to work with, especially if it's a rescue mission.
