Here's an idea for a Galaxy Quest sequel that can be made after Star Trek (XI) comes out...
...A big-time hollywood producer/director wants to make a big-budget film based on the old 'Galaxy Quest' TV show. However he re-casts young actors for all of the major roles -- except for Alexandar Dane as "old" Dr. Lazarus, who grudgingly agrees to reprise his role because he needs the money.
Of course, Jason Nesmith is very pissed-off that he hasn't been included in the cast of this new film -- and makes it no mystery to his fans how he feels about the snub. However, Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Fred Kwan and the others are nevertheless hired on as "technical advisors" for the film -- basically just to appease them and to honor some contractual clause that they all have.
We meet the new hot, young, good-looking actors playing "Young Taggart" and "Young Gwen" and find them to be stereotypical young Hollywood "beautiful people" types -- and we meet the actor playing "Young Dr. Lazarus", who is actually a lot like a young Alexander Dane, and is a very capable young actor.
Of course, during filming of the new movie, the Thermians come back to Earth looking for help from "Old Captain Taggart" and crew to save the galaxy from some huge threat. So Jason, Gwen, Alexander, and the rest of the old cast -- joined by the actors playing "Young Taggart", "Young Tawny Madison", "Young Lazarus", and the producer/director -- must go into space to help the Thermians fight this new threat.
Hilarity ensues.
Sub-plots could include Alexander Dane deciding to become a mentor to the young actor playing young Lazarus; the growth of the "beautiful people" actors into people with a bit more maturity; and the realization by the director that he needs to include ALL of the "old cast" in his new film. Maybe they could also bring back that guy from the "Mac vs. PC" commercials to reprise his role as the fan, Brandon.
Yeah -- I know it needs works, but it's a start.
I don't mean this to sound like a sarcastic backhanded slap at Abrams' Star Trek film -- for instance, I really don't think Shatner needs to be a part of Abrams' film....but I'm (half) serious about this Galaxy Quest idea.
