The TNG Relaunch - My version

Now that was a surprise. I liked Martinez's reaction to invasive surgery--it probably would be a not that often seen phenomenon in the Trekverse--definitely not such "hands on" surgery as Crusher performed. Nice touch.

Now...what could have caused T'Lana's rather inexplicable death?

yeah, what caused that? She's Vulcan-tough as nails. A few broken bones shouldn't have killed her.

T'Lana's death is both unexpected and a sad turn of events - I really liked the character.

I think Crusher made the right call - when technology fails, sometimes you have to resort to older but proven methods. Of course, this time it failed to save the patient, but at least Crusher gave it her best shot.

Picard sighed as Worf and the Changeling entered his ready room. He had spent the last several hours speaking with the Starfleet JAG for the local sector, then with Command and finally with the Federation Security Council in a closed emergency session. The current relationship with what was left of the Romulan Empire had been taken into account, and the possibilities of what Granger might be capable of were weighed against it. The answer had come back to him only moments ago and it was the answer he had been hoping for.

‘The Federation has agreed to grant you asylum,’ he informed the Changeling and saw the look in Worf’s eyes. ‘For the time being, you will remain on board the Enterprise, until the conclusion of this mission. You will then be dropped off at the nearest starbase for a secured transport to Earth. Until you reach Earth, you will appear in your current form except for your regeneration cycle, is that understood?’

‘It is, Captain.’

‘Good; Commander, please have Lieutenant Battaglia escort our guest to quarters.’

‘I will need a name if I am to be addressed,’ the Changeling said.

‘Yes you will, I suggest you choose one,’ Picard replied and his expression softened just a little. ‘Can you tell us where Doctor Granger is currently residing?’

The Changeling hesitated for the briefest of moments. ‘New Sydney, in the Sappora system.’

‘Deeper in Orion space,’ Worf replied and Picard recognised the timbre of it.

‘Mister Battaglia, my ready room please,’ Picard called.

‘Sir?’ Battaglia entered a few seconds later.

‘Please escort our guest to quarters.’

‘Aye sir,’ he replied and the Changeling followed.

Once the doors were closed, Picard focused his attention on Worf. ‘Commander?’

‘Ezri Dax’s family live in New Sydney,’ he replied. ‘I might be able to enlist their help in finding the doctor.’

Picard shook his head. ‘I’m sorry, Worf, but this time I need you here. I don’t think many Klingons would be found in Orion territory.’

‘No, they would not,’ the first officer agreed. ‘But Mister Battaglia would not be noticed so much.’

‘I still think that Captain Kira and Commander Dax should be informed.’

‘Commander Dax? She’s been promoted?’

‘Yes sir, she is the executive officer of Deep Space Nine.’

‘And Vaughn?’

‘Captain of the Aventine, another new exploration vessel.’

‘I heard of those, test beds for new technologies like the Luna class. Please contact Kira and Dax and ask if they are willing to assist us.’

The door chimed and Picard answered. ‘Come.’

Crusher entered and her face betrayed her anxiety. Picard was by her side in a moment. ‘Beverly, are you alright?’

‘I just received the latest reports from Starfleet Medical. There was an outbreak of the Bloodfire plague on Narendra III.’

‘Worf, speak with Chancellor Martok. You may give him as much information as we have, but not the location of Doctor Granger. I don’t want a fleet of battlecruisers and birds of prey sweeping into Orion space.’

Worf nodded. ‘If Imperial Intelligence discovers the location, the entire planet will be laid waste, Captain.’

‘We have to stop him, and soon,’ Picard said and Worf nodded, leaving the room immediately.

‘Doctor P’Trell has already diverted the Bernard and an escort to assist the Klingons.’

‘The Pasteur’s sister ship?’

She nodded. ‘Initial estimates are not good. It would seem that Doctor Granger has improved his bioweapon.’

‘We’ll stop him.’

‘You know where he is?’

‘New Sydney, but I need some help before going in.’

‘I’ll leave you to it, Jean-Luc.’

‘Do you have the results of T’Lana’s autopsy, Doctor.’

‘I do,’ she replied. ‘T’Lana’s death was the result of a toxic build up of a bacteria we’ve never seen before. It attacked the heart straight away. Whatever she encountered on Verex III crippled her immune system. It could be something important so I’ve prepared samples for Starfleet Medical and transmitted my report to Doctor P’Trell. The Changeling wasn’t directly responsible,’ Crusher added, blaming the creature for the counsellor’s untimely death.

‘We’ll discuss that later, but right now I need to stop a war.’

‘I’ll leave you to it,’ she replied and kissed him on the cheek before leaving.

Picard nodded. ‘Computer, contact Captain Kira on Deep Space Nine, priority one.’

‘Stand by.’

‘It took less than two minutes for Kira’s face to appear on his monitor.

‘Captain, it’s a pleasure to see you again.’

‘You as well, please congratulate Commander Dax on her promotion.’

‘I will, you just missed Captain Vaughn. He left the station a few minutes ago. Is there something I can help you with?’

‘I’m afraid this isn’t a social call, Nerys,’ Picard replied and filled her in on current events. ‘Is Commander Dax available’

‘She is. Are you taking the Enterprise to New Sydney?’

‘I would prefer not to, but time has run out. If the Klingons find out he’s there, the whole planet is in danger.’

‘The Defiant and the Aventine will meet you there, Kira out.’

Picard smiled grimly. Two starships for the price of one, with seasoned Starfleet veterans in command of both. He stepped out of his ready room and onto the bridge. ‘Miss McGowan, set a course for New Sydney, warp eight.’

‘New Sydney, warp eight, aye sir.’

‘Is there a problem, sir?’ Kadohata asked.

Picard nodded and informed her of the current situation. He returned to his chair just as Worf and Battaglia emerged from the turbolift and took their stations.

‘Commander?’ he asked Worf.

‘I don’t know how, but Imperial Intelligence knows that Doctor Granger is responsible and the High Council is clamouring for blood. I was able to convince Martok that although the human responsible is a Federation citizen his work is not sanctioned by the Federation. Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped the retaliation. Due to our unprecedented sharing of information, the High Council have ordered the annexation of the Mariposa colony. One of the Qang-class ships has been despatched.’

‘Which one?’

‘I was unable to find out,’ Worf answered with a grimace. ‘Chancellor Martok is under increasing pressure once again to abrogate the treaty.’

Picard sighed. ‘So this might set off a civil war?’

Worf nodded. ‘Doctor Granger is making considerable progress where the Dominion failed.’

Picard had no response.

This could easily escalate to the point where it spirals out of control. Some nice character work with the changeling as well. Also, I'm glad you mentioned Vaughn--I like him in the novels.

Its getting sticky, no question there. re: the Vulcan's death-are we seeing yet another bioweapon?

Nice how you have Vaughn as a Captain. I'm pretty sure he is by this point and still attached to DS9 I bet, w/ Kira being overall commander over him through. Great turning point through. Can't wait to see more.

It's been awhile and now I'm caught up. Wow. A lot going on. I'm enjoying Worf's run of action.

Sorry about the delay, I wanted to get this one just right.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

IRW Llaihr
Orion Space
Stardate 57089.1

Commander Sela paced the cramped bridge of the prototype warbird.

Donatra had refused to pledge her allegiance to the new director of the Tal Shiar and instead made known her own plans, which Sela agreed to accept at least preliminarily. Rekar had been tracking the Enterprise and monitoring all subspace frequencies, and had roused her from a sound sleep to impart important information. She strode onto the bridge, startling the junior officers and headed for her private office.

‘Well?’ she asked Rekar who stood by her desk.

‘The scientist attacked a Klingon colony, Narendra III, and the Klingons have launched an attack against the planet where they have learned the scientist is hiding.’

‘Where?’

‘New Sydney, a lawless world in the Sappora system, marginally under Orion control.’

‘The Enterprise?’

‘Heading for the system at warp eight, with the Defiant and the Aventine joining them. Starfleet has authorised them to stop the Klingons with by any means possible short of abrogating the treaty.’

‘Do you have any information on the scientist?’

‘Only what the Enterprise does,’ Rekar replied, handing Sela a padd.

The director of the Tal Shiar read through the contents and raised an eyebrow. ‘A Federation citizen? Why is it that humans are the most destructive force in this galaxy. Set a course for the Sappora system, maximum warp.’

‘At once, Director,’ he bowed his head and exited.

Sela felt the deck plates shudder as the ship increased from low warp to its maximum-rated speed. She sat down at her desk and took a closer look at the contents of the padd. The scientist was a clone from the survivors of a crashed starship and was exiled from Mariposa for violating that world’s bizarre laws on genetic engineering. She consulted her own library and found references to Romulus’ own experiments genetic engineering. Shinzon was a result of that work, as were a number of other successful operators, but the assassination of the Senate, all genetic engineering had been banned and anyone caught working on it would be executed. It was a short sighted, knee jerk reaction that the Tal Shiar, her Tal Shiar, would not accept.

‘Computer, contact Lorgh.’

Working,’ the artificial intelligence replied in a lower voice than that of Federation systems. ‘Channel open.’

Commander Sela, to what do I owe this dubious pleasure?’ the new head of Klingon Imperial Intelligence asked.

‘I want you to call off the Defence Force dogs headed to the Sappora system. I have the prior claim.’

Who are you to stake a claim?’

‘I am the Tal Shiar, a fact you would do well to remember in the future. I want that scientist for crimes against Romulan interests.’

Lorgh chuckled. ‘Rehaek posed little threat to us, but you, you are a dangerous foe. What will you give me in return?’

‘The Enterprise.’

We have a treaty with the Federation, as you used to.’

‘Picard will stop you from destroying that world, like he did at Tezwa.’

We won’t allow that to happen.’

‘Then you will have to destroy the Enterprise and the Defiant,’ Sela sneered.

Lorgh narrowed his eyes. ‘This conversation is terminated.’

Sela smiled. She knew that Lorgh would inform Martok about the presence of the Enterprise and Dax at New Sydney, which may or may not have a bearing on the situation. In the meantime, she had to formulate a plan to rid the galaxy of the Klingons and Picard. Sela leaned back and input a command sequence into the console which would direct her to the one relatively important person she had yet to inform of her promotion.

The seal of the Romulan Star Empire appeared on the monitor for a moment before Praetor Tal’Aura’s angry visage appeared. ‘You!’

Sela smiled thinly. ‘I am informing you of the change in leadership of the Tal Shiar.’

Tal’Aura growled. ‘Rehaek is dead?’

‘I do believe that was implied.’

What do you intend to do in his stead?’

‘I plan to remould the Empire and make it strong again. No longer will we see ourselves as adversaries of the Federation and Klingon Empire, we will once again follow the First Doctrine.’

Tal’Aura returned the smile. ‘The Precept of Unlimited Expansion.’

‘Yes !‘ Sela crowed and then narrowed her eyes at the praetor. ‘You can either follow this new path or be left behind.’

No one can stand in our way.’

‘We must unite the factions first,’ Sela replied. ‘The Remans must no longer be shock troops but equals, it is the only way to reclaim them from the Klingons.’

That will not be easy to accomplish, Director. Who will mine Remus?’

‘Slaves from conquered worlds, criminals and prisoners of war.’

I will speak with Colonel Xiomek of Remus, and ask if he accepts that status. What exactly will you be doing in the meantime?’

‘I will be taking Doctor Granger into custody for crimes against the Empire, though I may have to destroy a few Federation and Klingon ships in doing so.’

Try the stealthy approach, Sela, it is what we are good at,’ Tal’Aura replied and signed off.

Sela sighed. She was under no illusions that the praetor would honour her words, but it would do for now, until a power base had been established and troops gathered. Then, she would take the Praetorship by force and begin to rule the way Romulans were meant to rule.

Rekar to Sela, we are approaching the Sappora system.’

‘On my way.’

She emerged onto the bridge as the ship slowed from warp. The viewscreen depicted an approach vector to New Sydney and seven Klingon vessels in high orbit, with no sign of the Federation ships as yet.

‘What do we have?’ she asked.

‘According to the subspace chatter, the Klingons have landed ground troops and are conducting a door to door search in the major cities. The Enterprise will arrive in the system in less than an hour and the Orions have sent ships to protect their interests,’ Rehaek replied.

‘We will remain to pick up the pieces,’ Sela said as she settled into her chair and watched the planet grow larger in the viewscreen.

Real life has settled down, so I'm back.

Chapter Forty

USS Enterprise
Sappora System
Stardate 57091.3

‘Captain, we’re approaching New Sydney,’ Ensign McGowan informed Picard.

Picard turned from his conversation with Worf to look at the viewscreen. ‘Have we identified those ships?’

‘Yes sir,’ Battaglia replied. ‘The lead vessel is the IKS Gorkon, a Qang-class starship.’

‘Captain Klag’s ship,’ Worf said proudly.

‘Hail him.’

‘Aye sir.’

The former exchange officer’s visage appeared on the viewscreen and he smiled when he saw Picard and Worf but it quickly faded. ‘I claim batyay’a, Captain Picard, in the name of the Klingon Empire. The Sappora system is now Klingon territory.’

Picard nodded, unable to repeat the trick he pulled at Tezwa. ‘I acknowledge your claim, Captain Klag, in the name of the United Federation of Planets.’

‘What are you doing here, Captain?’ Klag asked. ‘This is an internal Klingon matter.’

‘I believe that the Romulans have a prior claim to the criminal you seek on the surface for the death of millions of Kevrata.’

‘The deaths of Romulan slave peoples while unnecessary are of no concern to me, Captain. I have been asked by Chancellor Martok to take the scientist into custody.’

‘Doctor Granger is a Federation citizen and I ask that you accord him his rights therein.’

‘My understanding is that he renounced his citizenship some time ago and is working for an as-yet-unknown third party.’

Picard sighed. Imperial Intelligence was getting better. ‘That is true. By capturing and interrogating him, we may learn who this third party is.’

‘We will pass on whatever we learn to you, you have my word as a member of the Order of the Bat’leth, Worf will attest to that.’

‘I take you at your word, Captain Klag. Perhaps the Enterprise can assist you?’

‘I think not, Qapla’!’

Picard turned to Worf as the viewscreen returned to the view of New Sydney. ‘Contact Chancellor Martok and try to convince him not to make any rash decisions. I think Commander Sela is still around and we do not want to hand over Doctor Granger to her tender mercies.’

‘I will do my best, Captain,’ Worf said and rose. ‘But I cannot promise anything.’

‘Mister Battaglia, open a channel to the Defiant and Aventine.’

‘Channel open,’ the tactical officer replied as Captain Vaughn and Commander Dax appeared on split-screen.

Captain Picard,’ Dax said with a grim smile. ‘My mother informs me that a quartet of Orion vessels are en route to secure their territory from the Klingons.’

This isn’t turning out the way you’d hoped, is it Jean-Luc?’ Vaughn asked.

‘Not at all, my old friend. But there is still a way to salvage the situation. We have to find Granger first, before the Klingons do.’

That won’t be easy,’ Dax replied. ‘They have far more personnel than we do.’

‘Our sensors are better,’ Picard told them. ‘I want you both to find a way to cover as much of the planet as possible with scanning beams and find every human being. If we have to beam them all up, we will.’

There are likely to be a lot of humans down there who are criminals in the eyes of the Federation and Starfleet. Will you release them once you have found Granger?’

‘We’ll see. I will look at each one on a case-by-case basis, it is the fairest way.’

‘Captain,’ Battaglia interrupted. ‘I’m picking up four Orion vessels on long range sensors. They’ll be here in less than two hours at their current speed.’

‘We’re on the clock,’ Picard said. ‘Good luck.’

‘Captain, even if we scan the entire surface, we may not find him,’ Kadohata said. ‘There may be cave systems or bunkers in which he is hiding.’

‘In which case the Klingons won’t find him either, but unlike us, they will make sure that no one else finds him.’

‘Sir?’

‘When the Klingons feel threatened by a planetary population, they tend to blast it into craters, something like our own General Order 24.’

‘That was superseded by the Eminiar Amendment, Captain. We longer do that.’

‘True, but it was done only once since the Federation was founded, enacted in the Taurus Reach in 2265 by Commodore Diego Reyes to protect the region from an ancient weapon of extreme power.’

‘What happened?’

‘He caused the deaths of thousands of people and was court-martialled,’ Picard replied. ‘I don’t remember the outcome.’

Kadohata wasn’t about to say that he had revealed everything but the outcome. ‘Yes sir.’

‘Find any cave systems and send an away team to search them,’ he said. ‘Klag didn’t want our help in finding Granger, but it is our duty to protect him from those who would do him harm.’

‘At least until he’s found guilty,’ Battaglia added.

Before Picard could reply, Worf returned to the bridge and strode over to his captain immediately. ‘I have some important information, Captain. You won’t like it.’

‘My ready room,’ he replied and looked at Kadohata. ‘You have the conn.’

Picard entered first and waited for the doors to close behind Worf. ‘What did you find out?’

‘Martok will not allow Granger to escape custody. Klag will remain in orbit until Granger is found or another confirmed sighting is made elsewhere.’

‘But?’

‘Just before the attack on Narendra III, a starship was seen cloaking.’

‘Romulans?’

‘No sir. Only one vessel recorded scans of it, and it was definitely a Federation ship,’ Worf replied, handing Picard a padd.

He looked up, recognising the ship instantly. ‘Has this been verified?’

‘Yes sir,’ Worf answered.

‘It’s been almost fifteen years with less than a dozen sightings,’ Picard mused. ‘There aren’t very many Constitution-class ships still in service today.’

‘If Captain Sejanus did acquire a cloaking device, it would explain why he has not been found.’

‘Is there still a warrant out for the arrest of Captain Sejanus and the impounding of the Centurion?’

‘Yes sir, there is. I checked a few moments ago.’

‘Thank you, Commander. I will inform Starfleet Command myself of these new developments.’

‘Aye sir.’

‘Dismissed.’

Picard sighed. The Federation Council had been split over the actions of Captain Sejanus of Magna Roma and even though they had branded him a rogue operator to prevent them being released from Federation membership, there were still occasional issues with Roman personnel serving on other vessels. Not since that time had a vessel crewed solely by Magna Romans been allowed, and now Sejanus was back—this time seeking revenge and domination.

Now the Nova Romans are in the act--and with Picard in the middle of a potential shooting war between the Klingons and the Romulans and with Sela just waiting in the wings...

And who says Picard draws all the easy assignments?

Can you bring Seven over to your Ent E as either an Engineer or science officer? I think Picard would be a much better influence on her than Janeway...Seven might actually develop some real social skills for a change....

Chapter Forty-One

USS Enterprise
New Sydney high orbit
Stardate 57091.5

Commander Worf watched the Orion ships close in on the planet and inwardly crowed. He was ready for a glorious battle but the Starfleet side of him warned that peace should rule this day or war would be the outcome, and Starfleet didn’t need another war just yet. He had finished speaking with the Chancellor a few moments ago and the news was not good, even with the Federation’s medical assistance, the death toll on that accursed planet was extraordinarily high. The virus had been improved and now proved fatal to Klingons, almost one hundred percent of the time. The only Klingons who survived were the ones with human Augment DNA from the twenty-second century. Doctor Crusher had informed them all earlier that the virus was not able to fully bind to the blood cells in those Klingons.

‘Commander, the Defiant is moving to block the Klingons from attack the Orions,’ Battaglia said, putting a tactical plot on the viewscreen. ‘The Aventine has moved to block the Orions.’

‘Warn all parties that firing on any Federation ship will be an act of aggression regardless of any standing treaties,’ Picard said as he emerged from his ready room.

‘Aye sir,’ the tactical officer complied.

‘What did Admiral Janeway say?’ Worf asked.

‘Find Granger before the Klingons do, and stop the Orions and Klingons going to war,’ the captain replied grimly.

‘What about Sejanus?’

‘Granger first,’ Picard stated and turned to Battaglia. ‘Status?’

‘Stalemate for now, Captain. Captain Klag and the Orion captain would like to speak with you.’

‘Split screen, Dax and Vaughn as well.’

‘Aye sir, all parties linked.’

‘I am Captain Picard of the starship Enterprise. The Klingons have laid claim to this planet to avenge the deaths of those who died in the cowardly attack on Narendra III. The man responsible is residing on this planet and I think it is in the best interests of all parties if we were to take him into custody.’

This planet is controlled by the Orion Syndicate, depart this system before you are destroyed,’ the Orion captain ordered.

If we do not find the doctor, we will leave this world a smoking crater,’ Klag said vehemently. ‘Picard, you recognised our claim. Would you go back on your word?’

Destroying a planet to kill one man is not honourable, Captain Klag. It is not an act worthy of a member of the Order of the Bat’leth,’ Commander Dax added.

The Klingon captain glared at the Trill. ‘And you are?’

The diminutive woman brought herself to her full height. ‘I am Commander Ezri Dax, captain of the starship Defiant.’

Formerly Jadzia Dax of the House of Martok, and Curzon Dax, friend of Dahar Masters Kang, Koloth and Kor,’ Klag growled his reply. ‘Very well, I will not destroy this world, but I take it for myself.’

Worf notice Vaughn smirk. The Dax name was well-respected in the Empire and sung in many songs. No warrior would dismiss a Dax’s wisdom easily, even if it did come from one who looked so young.

‘We can discuss territory later,’ Picard interjected. ‘I wish to take custody of Doctor Granger, unless you want the Romulans to have him?’

Never!’ the word spat from all directions.

‘At least they agree on that,’ Worf muttered sotto voce.

‘Then let us work together to find him.’

The Orion captain shook his head and barked an order to an underling. ‘No need.’

A beaten human was pushed into view. Picard leaned forward as did every other commanding officer. ‘Did you torture him?’ Picard asked.

He conducted a test for us on Verex III,’ the Orion captain replied. ‘It wasn’t very successful.’

Picard said nothing about his counsellor’s death, but he shared a look with Worf on the subject. ‘Captain Klag, would you consider allowing this man to be tried on Nimbus III?’

Under the Paradise Amendment to the Khitomer Accords? Of course, it will be an honourable trial.’

I do not accept,’ another voice added to the chorus, but without a visual. ‘The Paradise Amendment is a pathetic attempt to keep the Nimbus III dream alive. Hand Doctor Granger over to me or you will regret it.’

‘Welcome to the party, Commander Sela,’ Picard said. ‘Show yourself.’

The warbird decloaked in a higher orbit than the Enterprise. Battaglia frowned at the fact that he was not able to detect the ship.

What of our claim to him?’ the Orions asked.

‘You have no claim,’ Picard answered. ‘You asked him to kill people and he failed to kill enough. You’re lucky I don’t have you arrested under interstellar law.’

The Orion captain glared at Picard for a full minute. ‘We will not be so accommodating next time,’ he said and cut the channel.

‘Bridge to sickbay, I need an emergency team up here now!’ Worf yelled as an unconscious form was beamed aboard.

You will take him directly to Nimbus III?’ Klag asked.

‘He is your prisoner,’ Picard told the Klingon captain. ‘As soon as he is pronounced fit, we’ll transport him to your ship.’

Very gracious of you, Captain.’

I hope you make it to Nimbus III in one piece, Captain Klag,’ Sela replied as the warbird cloaked.

Romulans,’ Klag muttered before cutting the channel.

Captain, I must depart,’ Vaughn said. ‘We’ll be in touch.’

I’ll be in the area if I’m needed,’ Dax added.

‘That went better than expected,’ Worf sounded surprised.

‘As soon as Doctor Crusher says Granger is well enough to survive to trial, have him beamed aboard the Gorkon, then set a course for Narendra III.’

‘We’re going to find Sejanus?’

‘That’s what we’ve been asked to do. Admiral Janeway doesn’t think he’s acting alone.’

Worf nodded. ‘I’ll deal with it.’

‘I’ll be in my ready room. Kadohata, you have the conn.’

‘Aye sir.’

Worf knew that this wasn’t going to be the end of it with Sela. She showed up far too often and seemed to be dogging their every movement. It would be nice if she could deal with Sejanus, that way the captain wouldn’t have to arrest another Starfleet officer for treason.

Picard shows why he's a master of diplomacy and Sela is still hot on the trail. I like Worf's thinking--let one snake take out another...

Chapter Forty-Two

Palais de la Concorde
Paris, Earth
Stardate 57094.2

Esperanza Piñiero sighed in exasperation. As the President’s Chief of Staff, she was expected to run the office and staff with total efficiency and she managed that well, when she had her full staff available. Today, however, her deputies were busy with brushfires and her own assistant was helping them out, leaving her alone to fume. The doors opened and Admiral William Ross and Jas Abrik, the Starfleet liaison and Federation security advisor respectively, entered the room. Ross sat in the couch opposite the desk and Abrik continued to stand.

‘You ask me here and she’s not even here,’ the advisor said acidly.

She is the President of the United Federation of Planets, Mr Abrik and you would do well to remember that,’ President Nanietta Bacco retorted, entering the room from an adjacent office and smirking as Ross stood as well, granting her the respect due her office. ‘Had you been here on time, I would not have been late.’

‘My apologies, Madame President, I was receiving a security briefing.’

‘Admiral Ross, may I ask why you were not present on time?’

Ross tried not to fidget. ‘I was speaking with an aide regarding another matter, ma’am.’

‘Next time, when I call, you answer. Do you both understand that?’

‘Yes, Madame President,’ they replied in unison.

Bacco smiled as she perched herself against the front of her desk. ‘Now, tell me what’s happening with this situation in the Borderlands.’

‘Actually, ma’am, the situation has moved into Orion space,’ Ross corrected.

‘Klingon space now,’ Abrik added. ‘No thanks to Picard’s meddling.’

Before Piñiero could respond with a biting retort, Bacco put up her hand. ‘Mr Abrik, Captain Picard and his crew have this planet more times than you have shown up on time to meetings, so I would not cast aspersions if I were you. Can someone tell me exactly what has happened since my last briefing?’

Ross filled her in on the specifics with Abrik interrupting to add some remarks of his own.

‘So we handed Granger over to the Klingons? He’ll be guaranteed a fair trial I take it?’

Abrik snorted.

‘Captain Picard agreed to allow Captain Klag to take possession of the accused so that the Romulans would not be able to take him,’ Ross said. ‘As you know, the Klingons will do anything to antagonise the Romulans, especially now, and denying them a man wanted for genocide is certain to irk them.’

‘The Romulans don’t care about genocide, they’ve been willing to do it themselves for decades. They want him for his knowledge,’ Abrik said.

‘I have to agree,’ Piñiero added. ‘Praetor Tal’Aura probably wants the Bloodfire virus to unleash on the planets which are threatening independence from the Empire.’

‘So handing Granger to the Klingons was a better idea?’ Bacco asked. ‘I’m not sure I would have liked any option, but we’ll see how this plays out. Now, about the other Starfleet matter you brought to my attention, Esperanza?’

‘Fifteen years ago, a Federation starship nearly started a war between ourselves and the M’Dok Empire. Captain Picard was able to avert that war, but in doing so, the USS Centurion and her captain escaped. Captain Lucius Aelius Sejanus is a Magna Roman and was attempting to create a name for himself so that he might make himself Emperor on his homeworld. He has not been seen since then but a warrant is out for his arrest. Just prior to the attack on Narendra III, his ship was seen cloaking.’

‘So we have a rogue Starfleet vessel and a full crew?’

‘Yes ma’am,’ Ross answered. ‘The Centurion is an old Constitution-class starship with a crew of three hundred.’

‘So what is going on?’

‘Admiral Janeway authorised Captain Picard to apprehend Captain Sejanus and impound the ship,’ Piñiero replied.

‘Was a court-martial held at the time?’

‘There was a court-martial held for the ship’s political officer, Marcus Julius Volcinius, and he was found guilty of violating the Prime Directive but was remanded back to Magna Roma on charges of high treason.’

‘Punishable by death, I assume?’ Bacco asked.

‘Yes ma’am.’

‘Admiral, inform Captain Picard that Sejanus is to be returned to face charges and that this supersedes all other missions. The Centurion should not pose much of a threat to his ship.’

‘Ma’am, you can’t order Starfleet ships about.’

‘I’m invoking executive privilege to remove a danger to Federation security, I believe you’re familiar with the regulations regarding that, Mr Abrik?’

‘Yes ma’am.’

‘Good, now that’s out of the way, what’s next?’

‘That’s it,’ Piñiero said.

‘All right, then, thank you gentlemen.’

‘Thank you, Madame President,’ Abrik and Ross replied as they exited the office.

‘Esperanza, find out who Ross was talking to. A call from this office doesn’t go unanswered for twenty minutes without a very good reason and I didn’t buy it.’

‘I’ll look into it, ma’am. Can I ask why you wanted Ross in here and not Captain Richman?’

‘I had Captain Richman looking into something else for me.’

‘Ma’am, you know I have the greatest respect for you, but you’re really not supposed to get involved in Starfleet operations.’

‘Esperanza, Admiral Ross knows what happened at Tezwa, but I think he knows a lot more than he’s saying he does and I asked Holly to dig around a little.’

‘Yes ma’am, will you be wanting to watch the Pike City game this afternoon?’

Bacco sighed. ‘I’ll watch it this evening. Get Safranski in here, I think we’ll need his expertise on this Granger issue. We’ve handed a Federation citizen over to a foreign power to be put to death.’

‘Maybe he’ll get sentenced to life at Rura Penthe,’ the chief of staff said.

‘Esperanza?’

‘Ma’am?’
