Could life exist on a Arrakis like planet?

Generally, life finds a way to adapt. Just look at all the examples here on Earth were all sorts of organisms have found adapted to a very wide range of habitats.

I don't recall if there was any mention of conditions long prior to the dominance of the sand worms. It is possible that they took a lot of the water out of the primary ecosystem. The sand is mostly their waste byproducts and not the usual wearing down of rocks.

Don't forget that Arrakis was, once upon a time, a lush green planet with vast oceans.

So you've lived your whole life and never seen ANY movies about Arab Bedouin nomads (that the Arakeens Fremen characters were obviously derived from)????

They've been running around the deserts for many thousands of years....

Go forth and watch "Lawrence of Arabia" sometime.

;-)

I think water is a fundamental requirement to life so unless there's water on such a planet I would doubt it.

Fortunately Arrakis had water. Just not abundantly so.

Side note to Non Sync: I thought it was the Spice that was worm poop, not the sand.
