The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

More trippiness....

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/judexavier/comparisoncopy.jpg

See, this is what I'm talking about! 3 different interpretations. Some things different, some things closer in line...

Man this is a blast. :) :)
Wish I could have indulged in this kind of discussion years ago.

From putting this together, I can see my view of the nacelles are way too "under-endowed". (Viagra anyone?).

And that the saucer is really huge.

I'm reminded of, way back when, when nobody knew what a MIG-29 looked like, and there were all sorts of Pentagon conjectural guesses...or the "F-19 Stealth fighter"....that was fun.

Is that THREE designs transparently layered over each other?

Damn...

When I look at it too long, it makes my head hurt...

judexavier, that's one sweet drawing.

MadMan, do you think it's possible to do a crazy lense effect on your model for a better analysis?

From what I understand, the cameras in Blender suck. :) I can't figure out how to get the fisheye thing going on. I tried a couple of methods, but they didn't work they way I thought they were going to.

The problem with overlaying this on mine is that the perspective of the first image we saw was screwed up, big time, as you can see...
STXI_V2_Compare3.jpg

The green is the enterprise from the official picture (that had the shuttles removed) on top of mine. towards the center, it matches ok, but the farther you get outwards, it gets skewed.

I know mine's not perfect, by a long shot, but the perspective in this image is throwing a lot of people off, I think.
Well, there are certain things that dont' match, there, which can't be justified by the "shooting lens." But in most modelers (I know Maya, Lightwave, and 3DSMax have this) you can establish the "camera" characteristics and pretty much match any "filming" style you can think of.

The biggest complaints I have with your take is that I really, seriously think that the primary hull is too small (the "fish-eye" effect doesn't cover that much of a difference!) and the nacelle shapes are simply wrong. Granted, I like your take better... but it's not quite matching.

Try playing with the virtual camera settings and you should be able to get the right perspective... Assuming your model is done "to-scale" (ie, in units of meters, it's in the range of 300+ meters in length) you'd probably do well to try some traditional-size "virtual lenses", since I'm sure that's the effect they're going for. They want this to look like it's being filmed with cameras we're used to seeing used in real-life shots.

You know, judexavier, if your side view is accurate at all the interconnecting hull on this version of the Enterprise is actually way more sensible - and better - looking than the TOS ship. Damn.

Time to tear it down and re-re-rebuild it again.:)
With the front view roughed in, errors immediately pop up.
The nacelles really have to be lower, more inline with the hull.

I do now think the saucer is a good bit wider, maybe 20%.
(somebody kept saying that earlier, and I do believe they are correct).

I think the rear is going to be very narrow too.
Hmm, I see what you mean. I had mine lower anyway, but they get about 3/4 clearance still.

After I get done texturing this thing, I am going to make a variant with a larger saucer section, to see how that looks.

An update, while I am here...

I think I like these textures a lot better. :)

WOW! I just read this entire thread. I am truly impressed not only with your skills but how the communication between the contributors; whether positive or negative, contributed to the current results.

I liked the ship from the start. Yeah, it's not the original, but it's also not 40 years ago either. NICE WORK.

I LOVE that angle. Nice work.

Wowza ... cool beans on that there render. This is truly wild stuff - amazing that a fan can have the feature ship almost completely CGI-kitbashed months before the movie comes out!

Imagine how accurate you could get it if you wanted to spend the time on it for the next 6 months? More photos and images yet to be released ... you and some of the other talented modelers around these parts could have the makings of a fan production done between now and then.

Good work!

Thanks! I think that I have now taken this model as far as it's going to go... I still have other things to build. :)

Some Final Renders...

Good Mercy Lord those images are nice. You nailed that pearlescent texture look as well.
Man truely great job.

So when is your next thread coming? :)

Well, I was just over-analyzing screencaps..:) (And looking at what Madman was posting:) Cudos should certainly go to Mr. Church and his re-interpretation. Also, I have to say in doing more thumbnails and "napkin sketches", that there is apparently alot of Propert/Enterprise D influence; compound curves and inter-flowing shapes. (the dorsal and nacelle struts) It will be very interesting to see the eventual toys and model kits of this design. One thing I'm intrigued about (and could be completely wrong about) the front profile of the nacelle struts...like an upside-down St. Louis arch...could this perhaps be a nod to enhanced structual engineering? (Although an arch like this would be better vertically loaded, rather than horizontally/face-on, as seen here). ???

I'm waiting for Rick Sternbach to chime in, "Now you've got it", since he's pretty much the only one around here who's seen the actual orthos of this beast (and is, unfortunately, sworn to relative secrecy on 'em).

Keep tweakin', you've got to be getting close.

Wow, MadMan, those shots are sweet! This new ship is really looking good in those pics.

Very nice work, but I think engineering hull is a bit too cylindrical; if you look at the photo, it's curvier, particularly on the bottom where it enlarges a bit and has a smooth transition to the "cove".

Thanks. I think this is the best texturing job I've managed yet. :)

An example... The first image is my previous model,

Versus the new one...

So, what does everyone think about the nacelle caps? I heard they were orange, and in one image it looked like it had a lightning type thing going on, so that's what I came up with. I have a blue version, too...

Yeah, I know. I was having major problems with the shape of the bottom of this, and with that Vneck cut out spot at the top. This was the closest I could get, but I'm sure I will refine this again, later.
