WIP- Proto-runabout

BK613

Vice Admiral
Admiral
A bit about the history of this design. Back in the 80s several discussions with a friend* in law enforcement led to me sketching up a design for a patrol craft capable of chasing down miscreants like Harry Mudd and the Space Hippies. The design I came up with used the idea of the warp sled and extended it to a patrol craft with a small crew and limited duration.

Of that design, only the engines and rollbar remain, along with the warp sled idea. A great deal of the removed parts were heavily influenced by design cues gleaned from the F16 Fighting Falcon.

*(He contended that the Enterprise chasing down Harry Mudd was akin to an nuclear aircraft carrier doing drug interdiction duties and that it was plain silly that the federation didn't have dedicated craft for such events. )

If the miscreant was in a contested border area with a hostile power, as often seemed to be the case, I can more easily understand why Enterprise would be doing such a job.

I don't know if Starfleet would be handling law enforcement at all in other circumstances. I would think the Federation might have separate agencies for the run-of-the-mill version of that sort of thing.

So what does the thing on the top do?

...that's neat-looking... reminds me of the Vulcan warp sled/shuttle combo from TMP.

Duh, Klaus...

Nice design indeed, I gotta agree that chasing a single craft with a cruiser the size of the Enterprise is a bit of an overkill :p

There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'time to reload.'

How about a lower angle and better lighting? Hard to get a feel for the size of the cabin compared to the warp sled.

nice design.

Thanks

And ships to perform those run of the mill tasks, which was my friend's point.
Originally, "the thing" was just going to be phasers that pulled their power from the warp sled, ala the TMP Ent, since TMP was the era this was slated for. Now, I am thinking a swappable module, depending on mission.
Scientific, jamming, etc.

Working on it some this weekend. Like most of Trekdom, I have been distracted by the release of the trailer (plus those nigling RL things like work and holiday preparation.)

There were already "hoppers" for such an occasion & smaller scouts, perimeter-action low-orbit/atmospheric fighters, to discourage problems by "the low-level idiot fringe" near trading outposts like "K7".

And we saw these at what point during TMP? I don't remember seeing them.

>_< That doesn't mean we actually saw them... And it would be nice if you posted a deeplink instead of the homepage; I for one am VERY weary of searching that database for a single obscure ship while having to witness a lot of the crap that Trek fans have spawn...

Agreed. Also I think every artist here sort of creates in their own alternate Trekverse. Vektor's 1701 existing a slightly different TOS than deg3D's 2.0 version, for example.

So, while maybe some other fan has created some sort of similar craft in the past, that creation doesn't invalidate mine.
