The only way you can get good fries is to order them without salt and then salt them yourself. At least they are hot and fresh that way.

You'd probably love the fries at In&Out then. Fresh and made to order is the only way they do them.

Bears, Is there a Habit anywhere in or near Oxnard/Ventura?

1 - IN-N-OUT

2 - Tommy's

3 - Rally's (unfortunately the one that used to be right across the street from me closed and became a Starbuck's)

4 - Ruby's (a diner on the Huntington Beach pier - and other piers around SoCal - rather than fast food, but you get it fairly quick on off days)

5 - Carl's Jr.

I simply can not eat Fast Food burgers. No matter how tastey they might be at the time, I pay and pay and pay for it with stomach pains for hours afterwards.

If I want a burger when out and about I go to Gourmet Burger Kitchen (London's best burger franchise IMO) and order the Aberdeen Angus with Chorizo and spicey relish, with fat "home made" chips (not fries). It costs a whole lot more, but tastes infinitely better and with no ill-side affects.

Or... I make my own. Lean mince (with any excess fat lost in the cooking removed), salt/pepper, ground fresh red chilli's, a pinch of cumin, worcester sauce or HP sauce, egg white for binding, some stale breadcrumbs ground and blended in, basil and a very small touch of coriander leaf finely chopped... all cooked to your preference (medium for me thanks), topped with a few slices of advocado and homemade green tomato chutney, in between a toasted seasame bun.

Takes five minutes to prepare and however long to cook depending on how you want it.

Hugo - wants one NOW, but is ill so will have chicken soup.

Other.

A local place that makes great greaseburgers (sliders).

Chain wise, I kinda like Rallys/Checkers. Hardly go there, though. Nearest one is by the metro airport.

IN-N-OUT and Sonic. I'm not really much into fast food, but I'll eat it nonetheless if I'm hanging out with friends and/or family.

I guess if you're allergic to peanuts this would be a place to avoid!!
there fries are cooked in peanut oil.

People who suffer from peanut allergies are unlikely to have a reaction to peanut oil as peanut oil contains no protein.

Peanuts are, however, available in their stores to munch on while waiting for your food so, yeah, not a store people want to enter. But the food shouldn't pose a problem to peanut allergy sufferers.

Trekker, please consult your physician first.

Backyard Burgers is my favorite but they closed down both locations nearby due to the manager not paying the employees for two pay periods and them refusing to work so the best option left around here is Wendys.

Wow, that's pretty bad. How long is your drive to the next one?

Glad to see someone else appreciates Backyard Burgers, though.

I think there's one about 45 minutes away but it's in a different city. I may just have to go up there sometime though. :techman:

Vera's Burger Shack (Davie Village). Strange story. It used to be in West Vancouver but zoning laws kicked them out & they suddenly brought in every other burger / fast food restaurant.

I don't eat fast food very often, but when I'm on a roadtrip, I can't help myself when I see a Burger King. Wendy's comes in a close second.

Ruby's has become iconic of the Orange County beach scene, and it's become much farther reaching than you could imagine. My aunt took a trip on a bullet train in Germany a few years ago, and what was hanging in the lavatory, of all places?

A photo of the Ruby's on the Balboa pier in Newport Beach. On a train in freaking Germany.

I'm glad to see Ruby's got a mention in this thread!:techman:

I voted no preference. The only burgers I eat these days are of the distinctly non-fast food variety from some of the local pubs around where I work.

Another vote for In N Out here. I never get that gross, greasy feeling after eating one of their burgers like I do after Burger King or Carl's Jr. (And I don't even touch McDonalds). Their ingredients are all fresh and cooked and assembled right there in front of you, and the employees have very high cleanliness standards. Hot, salted In N Out fries beat the crap out of anyone else's, too...especially if you dip them in the extra spread sauce from your double-double with grilled onions and extra spread. Mmmm... :bolian:
