Riverside IA shipyards

Well, if the Enterprise is built in IA, maybe the USS James T. Kirk is built there too in the 24th century:) Ditto for the USS Hawkeye and USS Des Moines.

And the USS Abe Lincoln and USS Obama are built in Illinois in a Chicago-area ship yard near the great lakes.

Oh, and maybe the Enterprise-E was laid down elsewhere, since it was supposedly built by the San Francisco Fleet Yards too:)

Has nobody thought of the, dare I say it, simpler option?

The "San Francisco Yards" have their admin offices in San Francisco. Their actual construction facilities could be anywhere from San Francisco to Iowa to Orbit to Mars.

Quite.

And the dedication plaque just had the name San Francisco on it. It doesn't mean the ship was necessarily *built* there. We all know Starfleet Command is headquartered there - maybe that's the reason. The Enterprise could have been built at Riverside but later conducted its shakedown cruise(s) based out of San Fran.

Oh, we can play a lot of games.

For example, that the "San Francisco Yards" aren't located in San Fran but in orbit, and that's where the final fueling and commissioning of the Enterprise will take place.

That said, probably nothing of the kind will be mentioned in the movie.

The only thing that would make this idea even funnier would be if they established that the Riverside shipyard will be built on the grounds of the current Riverside Casino. :(

So you're saying that Starfleet is actually funded by slot-machines??? ;)

Why is it that anyone thinks any of this stuff is in Iowa other than the Corvette scene? Why can't JTK be riding a motorcycle in rural CA near San Francisco? Seriously, why would they build the friggin' Enterprise (and 12 other ships) in Riverside IOWA?? WHY????

Because scenes were shown in the "limited previews" (reported on by a number of folks including Anthony over at "Trekmovie.com") which state that in no uncertain terms.

Why Iowa?

1. It is not Michigan. It is not detroit.
2. It is far away from heavy population areas which allows for space to build big things.
3. Iowa is just good old holesome salt of the earth americana.

The San Fransisco Ship yards house the admin buildings for the fleet construction as well as the dedication plaque factory, those people working at the plaque factory are very proud of their jobs!!!!

True, but why Iowa? Just because Kirk lives there, the writers had to put the yard there too? I can just see an invading alien force bent on destroying starfleet saying, "Lets destroy the fleetyard in Iowa! Theres nobody living there but a few hicks and cadets. It'll be easy!" :guffaw::guffaw:

Starfleet should have slipped that info to the Dominion when the Breen make their sneak attack on Earth.

When the original production staff established this in the series bible, they were quite clear that the ship's components were constructed at the San Francisco Naval Yards, a real place in the real world. And that those components were assembled in orbit.

By the way... I'll guarantee you that there are just as many "doofus hicks" living in Los Angelas, in Chicago, in New York City... as live in Iowa. I get SOOOO sick of the "flyover country" biases. (sigh)

Leaving aside the assembly bit, has it struck nobody that the world's, well, changed since 1966?

The Hunter's Point shipyards have been closed for over a decade now in the real world, and there's been talk of using cleaned-up land on the site for the 49ers stadium.

It's probably forgotten by a lot of people that there ever *was* a shipyard in San Francisco, too.

So in short, you need to find a new site for the shipyard. Iowa, given you don't *need* to be near water, makes as much sense as anywhere.

(I would, personally, prefer that if we're going to move stuff, that the Academy and SFHQ be somewhere other than San Francisco, but that's just taste speaking. Really, Cape Canaveral would seem the more fitting place for Earth's space ventures, if anywhere.)

We still dont now how many locations in the US were nuked in WW3, we now San Francisco and Riverside Iowa came out ok though :)

So, you're saying that a visual reference to Pan-Am airlines in the new movie would be a bad idea?

Seriously, you make a good point.

Okay, if they said it was Iowa, then its Iowa. I live in Iowa. I AM a Star Trek Nerd, doofus (as mentioned) but it just seems a little strange to have them build Starships in friggin Riverside. Its just such a teeny town. I don't know. Maybe next movie they'll actually shoot IN Iowa and I can be a geek walk on. I would love to meet Cawley!
