Riverside IA shipyards

Has nobody thought of the, dare I say it, simpler option?

The "San Francisco Yards" have their admin offices in San Francisco. Their actual construction facilities could be anywhere from San Francisco to Iowa to Orbit to Mars.

True, but why Iowa? Just because Kirk lives there, the writers had to put the yard there too? I can just see an invading alien force bent on destroying starfleet saying, "Lets destroy the fleetyard in Iowa! Theres nobody living there but a few hicks and cadets. It'll be easy!" :guffaw::guffaw:
When the original production staff established this in the series bible, they were quite clear that the ship's components were constructed at the San Francisco Naval Yards, a real place in the real world. And that those components were assembled in orbit.

By the way... I'll guarantee you that there are just as many "doofus hicks" living in Los Angelas, in Chicago, in New York City... as live in Iowa. I get SOOOO sick of the "flyover country" biases. (sigh)

Actually, the only reason I mentioned hicks was because of the bar scene where Uhura calls Kirk a hick. Other than that, I wasn't making insults to anyone!

Because scenes were shown in the "limited previews" (reported on by a number of folks including Anthony over at "Trekmovie.com") which state that in no uncertain terms.

Really? I have only seen Anthony mention these Riverside Yards, and I'm disinclined to trust his grasp of trivia - he gets a couple of other things obviously wrong there (such as claiming that Scotty and old Spock fírst meet on the Enterprise) due to riding on his own expectations rather than watching the material through the eyes of a detail-starved fanboy like, well, me.

For the record, it has been reported elsewhere that this takes place in Iowa.

Sorry - I seriously tried to find it again, but there's so much traffic on this forum now that I honestly don't remember where to look.

It was the blow-by-blow description of the New York preview by this "Anthony" guy in any case. At one point, he indicates that when old Spock shows surprise at meeting Scotty, this somehow proves that in the "original" storyline Scotty wasn't supposed to be aboard the ship - while in fact it would seem to prove the opposite, that Scotty indeed was aboard the ship and Spock's meeting him on the ice planet is the result of time-tampering.

For the record, it has been reported elsewhere that this takes place in Iowa.

Links? (I know it can be difficult!)

I have not yet read a description that would solidly establish that "this" (the scene where the bike-borne Kirk ogles a starship under construction) would

a) take place in Iowa
b) be connected to Riverside Yards
c) show the Enterprise being built

The tidbits I have read have indicated that Kirk confronts Pike in an Iowan bar (perhaps Pike celebrates his promotion to Fleet Captain there? ;) ), and later heads to the Riverside Yards for his shuttle connection to the Academy at San Francisco. it seems likely (but may turn out not to be true) that Kirk for the first time in his life witnesses starships being built when biking to the Yards. It seems possible (but not necessary) that one of these ships might be the Enterprise. But so far, I've seen nothing more solid than that.

3. Iowa is just good old holesome salt of the earth americana.

Most truthful thing ever said on the BBS! :)

Is Riverside actually mentioned somewhere in the movie? Or is this yet another assumption?

Obviously, the Enterprise, and one can assume other starships, are built in Iowa because Iowa had senior members with great authority on the Federation Appropriations Committee. They pork-barreled the shipyards to Iowa. End of argument. ;)
