Hmm yeah it sounds familiar, but not at my work. Some of my friends have this issue, they are so worried about their career that I'm truely questioning if they enjoy life. (Most of them are into IT like myself.)

So sitting on a birthday party the only thing they talk about is their jobs and how far they have moved up, combined with the normal geek talk about software, code and other stuff I really dont find interesting at that moment. It is indeed a "race to superiority". Then if the conversation is coming to a halt they turn to me and start to "interrogate" me, it almost seems they are trying to test my knowledge. Interesting but normal human behaviour I must admit. It seems they use comparing as a way to check social status and feel less insecure. I'm quite happy that I'm almost totally imune for that, mainly because I got a large house and a car to match... (A joke guys!)


Anyhow I know how you feel, so good luck! I never heard of the term dick-swinging, but I find it very well fitting!

Luckily, I tend to work at places where most everyone is happy with who they are and what they have. Conversations about vacations, houses, cars and so forth are more about exchanging fun information rather than oneupsmanship.

Where I work, I'm one of the VERY few English-speaking crew-persons (one of three younger crew-persons, & my two main managers/assistant managers.)

Everyone else speaks Chinese. I have NO idea what they're saying 99% of the time. There's the occasional time the Cashiers or another Stockperson will stop & ask me in struggling English to explain something they heard on TV the night before. Or, the older ladies will ask me about my home life or treat me to a dumpling or bit of stir-fry they made for themselves for lunch.

Not really. All the union guys basically make the same kind of wages, and management and salaried employees like myself are strongly discouraged from talking about what we make. Everyone knows the starting salaries for the different jobs more or less, but not the exact amounts on top of that that people get paid for one reason or another (usually seniority/previous experience).

People talk about the new ATV or car they get, but not in a "I'm better than everyone" way. Not much anyway. Most people I work with are pretty down to earth guys and girls.

Yep. I'm a grad student and this is pretty common, especially among the faculty and with faculty/student power trips. Personally, I think it creates a toxic environment where learning and scholarship and of secondary importance and is unbecoming of an academic institution.

I work in an academic institution. We have a small unit which is separately funded and it's the most egalitarian environment you can imagine. No rank-pulling whatsoever.

I worked at a software company where the dick-swinging was out of control. The swingage went from "look out your office window. Yeah, that's my Porche" to "I am a senior director and you WILL do as you are told." I considered that a full hardon, not swinging.

Oh hells yes! It's even worse in the humanities. At least in the hard sciences you can back your shit up, i.e. produce some research. In the social sciences/humanities you are there on the force of your (often obnoxious) personality.

Now I work at a hospital and the dick-swinging is so epic it's almost laughable. At least they treat the non-docs as sub-human so we are not subjected to their monologues on vacations, cars, homes or trophy wives.

I used to work in a hospital for a year, so I know exactly what you mean. Now I have the "luck" of working with lawyers, and they are infinitely worse. All those lawyers as scum jokes aren't for nothing.
