It was clear to me way back when "Enterprise" was faltering that this - reinvention and modernization of Kirk and Spock - was the studio's obvious next step (other than complete retirement) - and I said so here, more than once.

I mean, what on Earth did you orthodox canonistas think they would do with "Star Trek" after "Enterprise" failed to revive the Franchise?

I don't recall who started that conversation in the ENT forum, but am certain I participated in that discussion and agree with SP on that poingt 100% and sure enough that's exactly what's happening now. My biggest hope is that JJAbrams gives up a great film to enjoy. Barring that, he's got the keys to the bus now. We can be on the bus or off the bus. I'm definitely on.

^Agreed. When I first heard that they were doing a "Young Kirk & Co" story, I was all sorts of skeptical. Just the thought of it had "fan wank" written all over it for me. However, I have never been more excited for a movie than right now. I like what I've seen, I like what I've read, and the trailer was just icing on the cake. So, while I didn't start off out-right against the movie, I certainly wasn't looking forward to it, but I am definately converted now.

^ Which fans? Different people have different ideas of what Star Trek is or should be. There have been five different Trek TV shows that someone will call their favorite.

The whiners here who bitch and moan the same song and dance with every post think they're the one true fanbase who knows what Star Trek is all about. Hell, some of those crybabies will watch this movie more times than anyone here who loves it just so they can tell us how right they were!

I'm not denying that...I'm just suggesting that "you dance with the date that brung ya", as it were.

Would it have been that hard to write their story keeping the facts of the various characters' back stories straight? Would it have hurt to keep their PERSONALITIES straight? (Kirk may be a womanizer, but a pawing letch?) Would it have hurt to stay closer to the original sets and ship design?

If you can have BOTH sets of fans happy, why not try for that? To dismiss ALL of them just because a few of them are a little obsessive seems to be to be unecessary disrespect for those whose dollars for 4 decades have kept this franchise alive.

There is such a thing as "middle ground" here, but people don't want to see that (on BOTH sides).

Count me as a semi old timer (I've got some gray hair to prove it!) I didn't start watching TOS until reruns though, so I don't know if I really count, but I do consider myself to be the date that brought them.

From the new trailer and the descriptions of the four scenes I do not see anything that assassinates any character. They appear to be in different situations than ones I would have had them placed - though this may have been the result of Nero's meddling. But even then, nothing strikes me as a gross violation of continuity at all.

No, TNG is Roddenberry Trek, which makes it Trek in its purist form. Even Berman Trek can still be classified as pure Trek, as Berman was worked with Gene himself.

Abrams Trek has no connection to Gene at all, aside from a poser running thinngs who thinks he is Gene. Say what you want about Berman, he knew he wasn't Gene.

And your objections to the validity of the Abrams version are largely ridiculous--bound in irrelevant minutiae like single nacelles and registry numbers (neither of which are "barred" by anything ever presented on screen--I've seen it all more than once, so I defy you to point to onscreen evidence).

Show me one canon registry number higher than two digits (meaning you can't use NX-01, NX-02, NX-09, NX-01-A) that started with a zero and I will shut up on the matter forever.

Gene casted people - at least a few - into the show because he wanted to have sex with them. Please stop acting like he's Star Trek's pope. TV is a collaborative effort.

Bragga or Berman didn't work with Gene Coon or Bob Justman, or Herb Solo - so maybe it isn't real Star Trek either?

Hang on, during Enterprise's 4 years run, when people (including myself) were complaing about Canon violations you were saying that this show wasn't in the same continuity as other Star Treks and was a reboot.

^No... no, I wouldn't be. If Braga and Berman turned out anything as good looking or as exciting as what I've seen so far, I would be behind them too. In fact, I haven't really had any issues with either of them until their Valentine to the fans.

There's a twelve year difference in Kirk's and Chekov's ages. Do the math. Either Kirk is the oldest human cadet in Starfleet history (in which case, we're also invalidating every reference to his early service, like his time on the Republic and the Farragut), or Chekov enrolled at the Academy sometime around the second or third grade, is currently of junior high age, and is just very very mature for his age. And we're still stuck with invalidating every reference to Kirk's early service record.

This is why I am confused as to the timeframe as outlined in the spoilers. I understand tweaking things, but this seems totally unneccessary to me.

Maybe the shots of Kirk and Chekov in their twenties are set at wholly different times and scenes in the movie timeline and by the time we see the "Classic Seven" on the ship in their TOS-style shirts and uniforms Kirk is now in his thirties like he's supposed to be?

Actually some of the fans gushing over the new movie are the same ones who gushed over Enterprise and defended the failed series to it's bitter end and then blamed it's critics for not liking it. If you look around the Trek XI board you can see those usual suspects up to their usual.

While yet the people who said Enterprise was crap are also slightly critical of this film. (not entirely though because they actually have a critical eye and don't randomly masturbate to anything with the Trek label on it.)

I'm just glad this movie isn't the dreaded "90210 Starfleet Academy" film that's been threatened either in movie or series form since 2000 when VOY was preparing to go off the air. Ugh.

I love the whole mythology of Star Trek. I don't mind seeing tiny, little things altered (e.g. the ENT being built on Earth instead of in spacedock), I can even handle the uniform and bridge redesigns, but some things revealed in those clips just break my heart. They could've adhered far more closely to canon and still made a great, fun movie, IMO.

One of the ways this could be made to work would be if Kirk is demoted back to ensign or whatever at the end of the film and is transferred to some other vessel to work his way up the ranks properly. It's still a bit wonky though...

There are many things I like and respect about J.J. Abrams. Not being our kind of Trekker isn't one of those. But at least he did his best and has TRIED to adhere to as much continuity as possible if you don't count the sets and aesthetics.

It's weird, my friend pointed this forum out to me a few days ago and I thought I'd check it out, and the 3 main things I saw here straight away, the fact nobody posted about the Kelvin, this Empire Blog, and the fact that it's "away from canon".

I don't know why people are grasping at the straws of canon, I mean this is a time-travel story anyway. Besides I really love where this film is going, it seems that the catayst for Kirk to join Starfleet was Pike, which is something small that I find neat.

Besides, I wouldn't call myself a trekkie, but I will say that this film looks simply amazing and I think is exactly what Star Trek needs, a fresh, clean reboot of the franchise, after they've done nothing good since the TNG (or maybe Generations).
