Uhura vs new Uhura

Nichelle Nichols has a level of class hard to match. There is no other Uhura for me.

What, you mean this isn't classy?

Decontamination scene, anyone?

Uhura was walking around with half her ass and panties hanging out from her "skirt" through 3 seasons of TOS...

and you are trying to lecture us on classy , a bra scene and decontamination crap ?

Nichols didn't get to choose her uniform. I am sure she would have chosen something less degrading.

Both are extremely gorgeous women.

Let me steer this a bit awry...

How many think that Zoe Saldano's Uhura will get more lines and character development in this one film than Nichols' did in the entire run of the original series?

Sir Rhosis

I think you are right about that. As innovative as it was to show a racially integrated crew way back in the 1960's, Uhura still kinda got marginalized, and basically was just kept in the background in almost all the episodes. She should (and probably will) have tons of lines and dialogue in the new film. And she's very hot...

Agreed and I hope you're right. -- RR

Let me steer this back on course...I never really was a big 'fan' of Nichelle. He is cute, especially early on in season 1...but this new chic is hot and I hope they put her in the most 'sexy' outfit they can...I could care-a-less about her being 'degraded'. She took the role, and they no doubt told her what to expect..and her stripping down to her panties/bra is what I WANT...The american society's aversion to sex is so...so....degrading..

I loved Nichelle Nichols as Uhura. She managed to pull off that ridiculous miniskirt and look great doing it. Nichelle (and her interpretation of Uhura) is classy and very strong, I think. I always thought she had lovely eyes.

Nichlle Nichols looked great, of course... I always thought she was especially hot in those early episodes where she had kind of a "wilder" look. And she just had great presence. Mirror, Mirror is her at her best.

But she was never too good at delivering lines. I've read somewhere, maybe it was her autobiography, that she would freeze up when the camera came in close for her to do dialogue. So, she wound up with short little snippets, never more than a few words at a time. "Hailing frequencies open," and "Captain, I'm frightened."

Zoe Saldana looks great, I hope she can also act.

We start out with a muscle car tearing ass down a dirt road. Eventually it careens off a cliff, but not before the driver jets himself out - he's a young boy, couldn't be older than 11. Suddenly what I can only describe as a space-cop asks him, "what is your name sir?" The young boy replies, "James Tiberius Kirk."
Then Chris Pine takes over as we see him being angsty, driving down the road on a motorcycle. We hear some voice over from someone else that confirms his angst saying things like, "You've never really been happy have you?" and etc. Then we see him drive up what looks like a smelting factory - probably more of that ship construction we got in the earlier trailer.

No offense to Zoe, but there's nothing distinctive about her look -- I pass dozens of women who resemble her every day. But how many look like Nichelle? For the past 25 years or so, nice-looking but rather indistinct people have been the norm in movies, perhaps so as to not alienate people in the audience who resemble them or think they do. That's a very different philosophy from 40 or more years ago.
