No. Actually, I think he's a bit arrogant about the Enterprise and about the franchise in general and knew exactly what he said and he said it in the same arrogant, and condescending tone that was used by the shipbuilder in Titanic.Ryan Church has been quoted as saying to TrekMovie.com:Nice... use a line from Titanic about the Titanic. That's not a particularly good harbinger. We've built you a fine ship.
So you really think Church is aware that he's built a lemon, and is therefore comparing it to the Titanic?
Thanks for chiming in, Mr. Church, but there's no credibility issue as I have stated only my opinion. What the flip are you talking about?See, that's where you lose credibility - stating your personal opinion as fact. You are telling us that the new ship is the Titanic (presumably you're implying some kind of "sinking" metaphor). Whereas the reality is that your opinion of the ship - i.e. you don't like it - is as valid as mine - I do like it. The difference is I'm not trying to tell you how wrong you are.
People need to learn how to express their personal opinion without stating it as fact, because it isn't.
Yeah, well sure... you're like one of 5 people in the world who hasn't seen it.But not particularly meaningful if you've never watched Titanic, I suspect. (I haven't, btw -- wasn't even slightly interested.) Did the line really originate there?.
Yeah, I think the viral marketing is already going on and they are juking the stats.
Ryan Church has been quoted as saying to TrekMovie.com:Nice... use a line from Titanic about the Titanic. That's not a particularly good harbinger. We've built you a fine ship.
Nope, not even close but in all fairness the line in Titanic isn't verbatim what Church said. The actual line is:Isn't it a reference to Scotty's line from Star Trek V? (half the doors not opening notwithstandingWe've built you a fine ship.)
It's the context of the arrogance of both of them to me with such similar lines is what is striking.Sleep soundly young Rose for I have built you a good ship, strong and true
Flooding various message boards with cheerleading "fans" is one idea that's been speculated about.
Well, I belong to significantly more than that and I never said that being a Trek fan was a disqualifier and if you're a Trek modeler, you have even more insight. What I'm suggesting is that I think there are a lot of plants on Trek specific boards drumming up positive buzz for the new ship. Trekmovie is a prime example. You want unbiased opinions, go to modeling sites that actually objectively look at the ship where it's more like 85/15 against.
I'm a member of two of such sites (Foundation 3D and Scifi-Meshes) and the negative comments all come from 'Trek-fans'.

So what would the term be for someone who hates everything about something in advance (without knowing anything about it), then tries to fit in all the new information into the self-set parameters of hate, fully intends to hate every second of it upon its release to complete the self-fulfilling prophecy, and spends all day bitching on message boards by repeating the exact same thing over and over again with every post?
Forget trying to make contact with that intelligent life form out on the other side of the screen...
...If you want to line up to be the next lemming, be my guest. Just don't expect me to be quiet about that cliff up ahead.
The sad thing is that I think CRA actually believes the bullshit he is writing...
If he doesn't believe himself, that leaves no one.
I don't know. There's always 3DMaster and W0rmh0le....
The sad summary of this is:Forget trying to make contact with that intelligent life form out on the other side of the screen...

Do you think it's possible that I want to see this movie because I think there is a chance that I might enjoy it, and I post on this board because I enjoy talking to others in a social situation (including virtual social situations) who share my enthusiam for Star Trek in general?
I could care less about who is on the other side of the screen -- and I suspect nobody who can make a difference in my personal life is on the other side of the screen, anyway. If 'TPTB' that you talked about are reading this (and hopefully they don't put much stock into these boards), I really don't expect them to seek me out -- in that case what kind of favor am I exactly hoping to curry with them? I'm just here trying to talk about Star Trek with other Star Trek fans.
To say that people who want to see this film (in the hopes that they enjoy it) have some "ulterior motive" for saying so is simply demeaning and rude.
You do realize that your circumstantial ad hominem attack is a logical fallacy:
You: This film will suck.
Me: I haven't seen enough of it yet to decide, but from what I saw, I definitely I want to see it. I think it looks good enough to see it in the theater.
You: Well, what you think doesn't matter, since you work for Paramount. Therefore I must be right, and it will definitely suck.
CRA, it's not the fact that you think this film will suck that bothers me. Hell, I don't care if you like it or not...The thing that bothers me is that you dismiss anyone else's opinion, and if (heaven forbid) they disagree with you, then they must have "ulterior motives" for doing so.
Might want to check your lemming lore, there. If you want to line up to be the next lemming, be my guest. Just don't expect me to be quiet about that cliff up ahead.
The Haters Club says, "I hate this movie AND I hate you for liking/loving this movie."
True. The Haters Club says, "I hate this movie AND I hate you for liking/loving this movie."
Closer to "There's something wrong with you for liking this movie."
Which makes such a poster really, really pathetically insecure.

A fanbase like that may be a mile wide, but it's also only an inch deep. Forget trying to make contact with that intelligent life form out on the other side of the screen, TPTB are now hitching the future of the franchise on fair weather fans who are easily distracted by shiny objects (hence, my frequent citations of "The Emporer's New Clothes").

Not for nothing but the fair weather fans are exactly who they should hitch the future of the franchise on, NOT US.There's a term for folks who mindless jump on whatever bandwagon comes down the pike: Useful idiots.

On that note, you have every right to complain about things that we know for sure about which amounts to the designs of two ships, the bridge and the cast. Other than that, it's all speculation. We have no idea what the plot is, how much canon has been violated or anything else. We don't even know the context of Kirk and the corvette and the Robocop dude.If you want to line up to be the next lemming, be my guest. Just don't expect me to be quiet about that cliff up ahead.
