Unresolved Trek trailer questions

Right, they're made in Detroit, by General Motors.

The Enterprise was a Chrysler Constitution-class.
What!?!? Everyone knows that the Enterprise is a product of Toyota. :p

That's sad.
If I'm not mistaken, it belongs to a TrekBBS member.

[Edit: I'm not. Look here.]

On the huge, shadowy shapes in the background of some of the trailer shots: I reassured that I'm not the only one who thought that they looked like thunderheads. They seem too irregular in form and too large to be structures.

A few observations:

1. I got the distinct impression that young Kirk drove that car off the cliff deliberately, probably as an act of defiance against the abusive uncle we've been hearing about.

Not true, the road ends there

Meaning... what? Just because the road leads right up to the cliff--which is clearly some type of rock quarry, by the way--doesn't mean Kirk didn't know about it and have every intention of sending the Vette to its doom. My take on this is further reinforced by his tone of defiance when he states his name to the motorcycle cop. He's not acting like someone who just narrowly avoided death during an innocent joyride, he's acting like someone who just accomplished something he set out to do and damn the consequences.

No, look a little closer. We can see them in two shots and they are clearly artificial structures.

I have to disagree with you. It doesn't seem at all plausible to me that he intended to drive that car over the cliff; he just wants to get away from the cop.

But yes, the looks like a quarry - man-made.

It also looked like he drove through an open gate and passed some warning signs. Will have to look again.

As far as the large structures go. Well, if the Enterprise is being built in Iowa, then other starships (of all types) might be built there, too. So they could be for storage, or even hangers of sorts.

Or, they simply could be very, very large 23rd century-style silos. They can stick out on the Iowa landscape.

Those of you who are looking at the YouTube version of the trailer, I'm sorry to say that you got the short end of the stick quality-wise. The MP4 version is much clearer and less washed-out. There is simply no way those tower structures are thunderheads or any other type of cloud formation, they're too geometrical and obviously artifical. Having seen the trailer in the theater also helps to confirm that.

I don't know what they're supposed to be. Arcologies? Weather control complexes? Anchor bases for a chain of orbital elevators? I don't know. Whatever they are, they're frickin' huge, like, miles wide and tall. At one point I thought they might be giant rock formations or plateaus, but some of them are much wider higher up than they are at the base and distinctly lop-sided, and again, they are very geometric.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I'm leaning towards arcologies. There was a article way way back that JJ was consolting with futurists in order to fleshout the world in the 23rd century.

I don't know what they are for or do but I think they are artificial structures and yeah, they are freaking HUGH! They make the Eneterprise look like tinkertoys.

I can't wait till we can post caps of them.

It just occured to me that they could be ginormous junk food franchise outlets off in the distance with massively huge Golden Arches that extend miles into the stratosphere.....

.....but then again, no.

Looks like that cop stays busy. When he's not chasing teenagers in 20th century classic cars, that is...

You're entitled to disagree, but I find it entirely plausable. As mentioned, he smashed through a gate and past numerous warning signs on his way to that cliff. He also pulled that slide and bail-out maneuver at the end in a way that looked far more deliberate than accidental. And again, that tone of defiance when he states his name to the cop, as if to say, "You're too late. I did what I came to do and I don't care if you know who I am."

There are two other reasons why I think I'm right:

1. There were plausable sounding rumors months ago about Kirk's joyride in the Corvette havng something to do with revenge against his "abusive uncle."

2. Which says more about the character of James T. Kirk? That he stupidly went for a joyride in an antique car and stupidly drove it off a cliff while stupidly running from a cop? Or that he was making a bold (and probably rather stupid) statement of rebellion and defiance? Which version fits better with the Kirk we see in the rest of the trailer?

Hey, I don't know anything for sure, I just call 'em like I see 'em.

Meaning he saw the cliff/quarry (wich indeed does look human-made, maybe ruins from WWIII) when it was too late to stop! If he just wanted to annoy his uncle by destroying his beloved 'vette, surely there's other easier and safer ways to do it...

Starships aren't built in Corn Country.

No. I doubt that. Starfleet doesn't have to go hat in hand to the Government for a bailout because it's been building Starships that nobody wants to fly.

But I did notice that the E has fins. Nice touch. Maybe the Enterprise is one of GM's new "Volt" starships. Just pull up to a Starbase and plug it in....

Of course, it's amusing that some are getting upset that the shipyards aren't in San Francisco, because they really should be in space :)

We don't know for sure they aren't in SF, and only the final assemby and finalization should take place in orbit. Trying to build it in space from the ground up would be incredibly difficult and dangerous.

They're clouds. :)
