Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

It's still possible for the Enterprise to lift off from the ground-based shipyard. We've seen her maneuver in an atmosphere before. What we know for a fact that she can't do is land.

Watching it all I could think was, "this is not ST". It just looks so over done and "all show". Star Trek was always about the characters; it just seems like this one is all about trying so hard to make Trek "cool" in the eyes of people who would normally not care at all. I am not sure that is what will make for good Trek. I know that there are plenty of people who still get drawn into each of the series and become fans. They respond to the message and hope and the characters, not the flashy affects. I want this to be good, but to quote another good sci-fi movie, "I've got a bad feeling about this".
Says the man with an avatar referencing the WORST Star Trek Series ever produced.....

That worst series was VOY. I just do not see this as a Trek movie. I am sorry but this is not BSG that was on for 1 season and can easily be redone. Trek has 40 years of history and 300 of Trek history. If you want to reboot it, just say it is a reboot; don't pretend to care about canon and then just create a new ship that does not look enough like the original (all so they can sell toys) and an interior that looks like an iPod. Also, the whole trailer looked like just any other sci-fi flick with a trek facade. Why would you not just say, "it's a reboot" and then it would be much easier to accept.

That's something I thought I'd never read in this forum. And I mean that with all due respect, MattJC. :techman:

Someone must have missed this thread.;)

If they can win MattJC over... maybe there is hope yet! Even for the Haters Club members. Now that is Change We Can Believe In!

I'm not quite won over just yet, I still need to hear and see more about it. They obviously spent alot of money on this movie.

Speaking of which, I wonder if they actually crashed the 'vette or somehow faked it. Those suckers ain't cheep.

I'm still happy that you are finding the answers you wanted. I'm still hoping you will like this movie. :techman:

Yeah, I would've preferred to see it in pieces and not assembled, and in San Francisco as opposed to (seemingly) Iowa. Alas... *shrugs*

It is conceivable that what we glimpsed in the new trailer is part of an "all-up" systems integration test before the ship is disassembled and the components shuttled/beamed to orbit for final assembly, but I somehow doubt it.

TGT

It's like I'm dying of dehydration in the desert, and you're holding a cool glass of water just out of reach.

I hope so, too. I love Star Trek and I love going to see Star Trek on the big screen.

Another one of those speeches. Great.

Profound. They 90 Seconds to make their case. Are they going to show a bunch of Frasier Crane moments? I think not. Besides, the first 30 seconds or so does have a big character moment for Kirk when he pulls up to see the Enterprise! Listen to the narrations from Pike and Sarek. It DOES have something about the characters.

I am not sure that is what will make for good Trek.
No guarantee for anything. First Contact trailer anyone? Lots of action in the trailer and commercials. Great movie.

Well stand outside a theater, and hand out a pamphlet instructing people on what to respond to and not to respond to before the movie this May.

Why? What difference is it to you whether he likes it or not? You don't know it's a good film yet, do you? It's like Schrödinger's Trek ... the film is done and in the can. It sucks or it doesn't, but until May, we really won't know.

Me? I don't give a tribble's fart whether MattJC, you, TGT, Vektor, or Polaris likes it ... I'm hoping *I* like it. That's all that matters to me. It's my universe, after all. The rest of you are freeloading.

Why do YOU give a fuck what I said to MattJC?! It was meant for him and he knows what I meant. If you bothered to read MattJC's recent posts, you would know that he has been on a journey. I rejoice with MattJC in finding the answers he has been seeking.

As a movie trailer - excellent
As a TREK trailer - I want more!!!!!

Now I think know what they men about the epic feel to the effects...for instance the cadets walking to shuttles and shuttles flying overhead. In prior TREK movies we likely would have gotten a simple cut shot of cadets walking to shuttle, shuttle seen flying away with some other SFX work in the background.

Observations --

Its a Corvette not a Mustang - but definitely not V8 powered, there is a bit of techhy whine when it accelerates past. My guess....early Jimbo is either a gadget builder or he steals it.

The front profile of the Enterprise looks spot on from the the manual - honest.

The warp effect is straight from SW episode 4 right before the Falcon comes out of hyperdrive near Alderan -- wispy white globs.

Wow, a monster without a latex forehead and a big damn mouth

The bridge looks way way, way too big.

The Chekov/Sulu station is curved.

The hostess table is on both sides of the bridge - echoes of ST:GEN Ent-D bridge

The Ent is completely assembled on earth not just components

Kelvin is definitely engineering hull above and nacelle below.

Starbase one appears to exist in JJs world, Enterprise shown warping away from it...or something similar anyway.

Urban seems to BE McCoy; while Pegg seems to be Scotty's giddy school girl alter ego

Film does have a big, epic feel to it.

The music score is also very good.

I don't think Sector 7's point is about whether or not MattJC likes the movie... I think the point now is that MattJC doesn't seem hell-bent on hating it, which is definately a pleasant sight to see (or... read). :)

Watched the trailer again and the inside not only look like an Apple store it also looks a lot like the inside of the Axium from Wall-E. It looks laughable.

As for give a speech, that was not a speech, just my opinion like all of this thread is. Watching TUC and it looks so good, even for today. The ship interiors and the effects are still top notch. I stopped the new trailer to get a better look at a lot of the interiors and they just look so over worked. One of the things that I loved about Trek is its clean design. There were not a lot of extra bells and whistles for just show, it all looked like it had a good reason for being there. Just sad that they felt like they had to make things "cool" instead of respecting the great design work that has been done for 40 years. Oh well, I am still hoping that it will turn out better than I think it will, but expectations are low.

:wtf: What? The design of the Axiom was just beautiful. Star Trek would be very lucky to get an interior design like that without using computer effects.

Yes, how terrible to be cursed with optimism. It's such suffering to hope for the best. and wanting someone else to enjoy something? Why, that's positively generous! Empathetic, even. No room far that on this forum, no sir!

It's my universe, after all. The rest of you are freeloading.

What a selfish, miserly attitude. It's not "your" universe. You didn't create it, you don't own it, is wasn't made specifically for you, and you have no more right to it than the rest of us. We're all fans and Star Trek is all of "ours."

So in spite of the naysayers, here's hoping JJ has made a film that as many of us as possible can enjoy.
