I imagine the intent here was to subliminally invoke the reality of skydiving - we've seen darned few close-ups of skydivers in action that aren't shot with some variation of a hand-held or helmet camera.

Oops - posted this in the thread marked Star Trek XI Trailer.
First impression...
This teaser trailer is kinda cheesy.
But it just may be the right kind of cheesy.
The opening shots of the speeding car on an Iowa dirt road were fine, sparked curiosity, nice action bit when it goes over the cliff. Nice reveal on the future cop - and I myself laughed out loud when the kid stands up and announces "My name is James Tiberius Kirk!"
(I don't think most of the people in the audience with me had any idea that the name meant anything.)
There was a whole lot more Spock in the trailer than Kirk - meaning all it showed was a fairly generic "young rebellious guy searching for himself", whereas the stuff on Spock gets into his dual nature a bit. Got much more of a genuine Spock vibe off of Quinto than a Kirk vibe off of Pine, but, again, all his stuff was very generic.
From that point on it was simply "hey, this is big! It has 'splosions! Here's a gratuitious bra! Here's a shadowy sex scene! Here's more 'splosions!"
I did like Kirk's "Buckle up." I thought Scotty's "I like this ship, it's exciting!" was cheesy (but then most of Scotty's lines have always been cheesy, so that was actually authentic).
And I must admit to giggling giddily at Nero's "The wait is over." and the title card.
*shrug* It might be fun. I will have to continue to reserve judgment until more material gives a deeper indication of story and character.
PS - Quantum of Solace was a giant snore. Guess I'll have to stick to my belief that the only good Bond film ever made is Casino Royale.

Just got back from Quantum of Solace, which wasn't quite as good as Casino Royale but still a decent film. The trailer for Star Trek was better than I'd expected it to be -- it's obvious the story will focus on the truly tired cliches of teen rebellion many people have been expecting, yet the scope of the film is bigger than anything we've seen before in a Trek film and what should have been done years ago. Pine does give off a Kirk vibe, mostly in the way he moves rather like a more lithe Shatner. There is a weird look for Starfleet that will make reconciling this as anything but a reboot rather tough. However, it may in fact turn out to be a better film than I was anticipating. I still don't know if I'll see it in the theater, but I'm more intrigued than I was yesterday. I was in the "auditorium" theater at my local Rave, and it wasn't too full, but I will say that the audience reaction was muted . . . which may be more telling than it seems given that the lady to my right and three rows up was extremely interactive with Quantum of Solace.
Well, Trek might as well go for "cliches of teen rebellion," having long since exhausted most every other melodramatic cliche...
At least you got that! I saw it just this afternoon, and while there were only around 20 people in the theatre, no one made any kind of comment or chatter. It was almost dead silent... I think I was the only one excited about it
I was kind of disappointed there was no Simon Pegg in the trailer... !
Ah ok, I thought you meant the warp effect as seen from space, on the exterior of the ship I mean.

Same thing, I think. A blue cloudy blur. No stars visible, IIRC.
It won't be at most UK cinemas for a week or two. Only the Empire Leicester Square has it for now, and not with QoS.
I think the delta was there. The title certainly was, huge, in the classic font
Some cliches may work better than others, especially for this middle-aged viewer.
Well, everything works better for some people than others. That doesn't mean the quality of thought behind one cliche is fresher or better than another, though.
Maybe we're all simply most confortable with the cliches we know best. I certainly have thought for many years now that "Star Trek" is "comfort food" entertainment in a lot of ways.
It's a trailer for moviegoers in general, not Trek fans. It's purpose is to put butts in the seats of every persuasion. Judging by some of the reports made here, it's certainly reaching across the aisle, so to speak.
Now I just want to know where the hell Dennis got his new avatar from, since I'm in the dark about the trailer until Monday.
