Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

Might see Changeling at the Empire this weekend in that case

When you say the Empire will have premiere, does that mean you think it will play there and not the Odeon on opening weekend? Nemesis didn't feature in either cinema!

The Enterprise being built on Earth makes for a great visual, though, when the camera POV is someone on the ground - presumably Kirk, at least as the trailer is cut together - looking up at it.

The angle is breathtaking and the ship is majestic; it's like looking at a huge monument as it's being constructed. I thought of the Statue of Liberty, for no good reason.

As I said, the cutting-together of the trailer presents this as if Kirk is looking up at the Enterprise for the first time - it's really damned effective at communicating what you would imagine Kirk might feel, much more so than a straight replay of the inspection fly-around in orbit could be at this point.

Out of curiosity, how long would you say the trailer is? A minute?

Space battle wise, how many ships? Who was fighting who?

Just curious :)

It feels like about a minute. Thinking back on the pace and build-up of the opening scene introducing the young Kirk, though, I'd think it's probably ninety seconds. I could easily be wrong; the cutting is (as normal these days) faster and faster as the ad progresses.

The space battle shots just fly by so quickly in the trailer that on a single viewing I didn't get much sense of who was what. The one striking, very quick cut in which I recognized the Enterprise is with it flying right into the camera with bright light behind/around it. You just catch the shape, and the shape (from the front, anyway) is right.

There are somewhat more lingering (two, maybe three seconds) shots of other visually arresting elements, such as a Vulcan city seen from above which is...really not like Vulcan cities we've seen before, yet is. I'm not sure how to describe that better, other than to say that the color scheme is brown/beige and the buildings are very sharp-angled and almost cathedral-like.

So basically lovely visuals then! Can't wait, thanks for that

I've heard a couple of reports saying that the space scenes are very different to what we've seen before on Trek, which in my opinion is a great thing

I've heard that too, but I can't really decipher the meaning - different how? No more operating on a single plane? more dynamic? more realistic (think BSG)? more grand (think opening battle in SW Ep 3)?

Hopefully it won't be as terrible as the opening battle of Ep 3...

Beyond that I'm not sure myself. I imagine different in terms of camera angles, lighting, dynamics, special effects etc

The Empire will definately show the new film. They've also had the premieres of all of them since TMP. As for not playing Nemesis when it was released, they probably made the right choice on that one! :)

The Odeon in Leicester Square has never shown a Trek film, AFAIK.

At least some of the cops are robots or cyborgs. (I thought I was watching a remake of "THX-1138" before boy-Kirk told us his name).
  • Robot cops ride hovering motorcycles.

Robocops? At least he didn't get pulled over by the ED-209.

With CGI you can have what ever camera angle you want. However, past Trek filmmakers chose to show us the same flybys we've been seeing since TMP.
I hope the new movie is different is that it is using the full potential of the medium.

I'm very curious about this too, because throughout the decades we've seen a wide variety of space stuff from Trek. From the majestic long shots and amazing detail of TMP to the frantic space battles of DS9. I wonder just how the space stuff in Trek XI is different...

Star Trek spacebattles have been pretty tame from a camera point of view. The one particular example that sticks out is Sacrifice of Angels, that had some lovely shots, but again, that was mainly from visual eye candy rather than perspective.

Nemesis had the most pathetic space battle I've ever seen in a Star Trek movie. Even the one in Generations was more dramatic and visually stunning. The lighting in the Basan Rift was flat, dull, lifeless. The Enterprise looked like a computer game ship, and the Scimitar was a big black pig ugly mess. All the shots fired got lost because there were so many, and there was no real force behind them. Compare that to Generations where you could literally feel every Klingon torpedo, or in FC when the Quantum torpedoes actually had WEIGHT behind them, ditto the fleet all firing their weapons.

Hopefully all these reports of the space scenes being 'different' and 'fresh' are accurate.

I agree Kpnuts, I thought in terms of impressive space battles, First Contact tops it, even though it is so short. You felt the precarious situation every ship was in and the force behind the shots.

Though I kind of liked the Nemesis battle just because it in some ways reminded me of a navy battle with everyone moving all slow around everywhere.

The ironic thing about that is John Logan's original script called for a MASSIVE space battle, involving the Romulan fleet and possibly Starfleet vessels (maybe the ships from 'Star Fleet' Battle Group Omega...wouldn't it have been nice to see the Renaissance class U.S.S. 'Aires';)), along with the Enterprise and the Scimitar. But this idea was nixed for cost-cutting reasons. Pity; that would have been the grand finale in an otherwise shitty movie.

I always thought the battle in the Wrath of Kahn rocked. As did the sound-track.

The clips shown earlier this week didn't feature any space battles, but there were still some interesting shots.

During the sky-dive, their was a quick BSG-style handheld zoom-in. My favourite though was when Enterprise dropped out of warp into a debris field. The ship rotated 90 degrees to starboard to avoid it, but with grace and a weight to it that really felt like it was a huge ship. Such a cool shot. The clip ended at that moment, but that looks to be an interesting scene!

Nice warp effect? Sounds like a great shot! Visually stunning I hope!

I hope they don't overdo the BSG style handheld zoom effect. A couple of times are fine, but... - Unless every space shot uses it, having more than a couple will just look silly

More likely they'll just do the Bourne shakeycam palsy thing that is wrecking so many movies along with hysterical overcutting.

I'd settle for credible looking miniature shots over 'full potential' cg that gives itself away as soon as you get in close ... damned near every time.

Just came back from seeing the trailer, and I have to say - It was AMAZING!

I walked away realizing one thing - We have seen Kirk in his heyday in TOS, and we got more of our share of mid-life crisis Kirk in Trek's I-V. We even got to see retirement Kirk in VI and Generations. This is the part of his life that fills in a lot of all those blanks we've gotten hints about, but never really seen. Kirk as a punk in his youth. Kirk as a brash cadet. Kirk as a womanizer with a reputation that he always blushed at when running into someone from his past. The trailer really gave the impression we are going to see the Kirk who became the man in the center seat.

Did anyone catch a slight connection from when young Kirk was pulling himself from the cliffs edge after totalling the Corvette with the opening scene in TFF with Kirk scaling El Capitan? Certainly they make Kirk into the thrill seeker. It's almost too bad now they took out the orbital sky diving scene from Generations, because it seems to me that it would be the perfect connection from Kirk's early life with his later life.

The effects shots were amazing! And the Enterprise looks fantastic. And I don't care what the naysayers gripe about the E being built on earth. It's a great visual moment. Period.

I heard a lot of murmering after the trailer played. All the ones I made out were very positive. A LOT of, "Wow! That looks like it'll be good!" A few, "May?! I wish it weren't so far off." and such.

Overall, a great experience. Can't wait to see the finished product!

To restate, the handheld zoom was on people shooting through an atmosphere at high speed. Shots of ships, so far, are more graceful than that (not that I have a problem with BSG's style).

I've only seen the trailer once, but I believe you see the new warp effect there. The best way I can describe it is sort-of a blue blur. When arriving at the debris field, you see the blur on the viewscreen, then SNAP, normal space and debris.

I hate to say it, in fear of the reactions of certain close-minded people here, but that scene reminded me of the Falcon's arrival at Alderaan.

I much preferred the Rebel fleet's arrival at Endor, but oh well.
