Bit puzzled as to why some on here are noting it doesn't look like TOS Enterprise. Er it won't, it's from a movie made in 2008 . Its not 1968 anymore folks!

They should have just made this movie about Captain John Doe, in command of the U.S.S. Federation, if they wanted to abandon the '60s television series.

There are some minor things I'm wondering about.
Like if this design would look slightly better if the secondary hull was moved back a little, the bussards were lit and the deflector lights red instead of blue...
Is there a photoshop-wizz here who could "adjust" the colors of the bussards and the deflector?

Have a look in the Here it is - no bloody "A", "B" "C" or "D" thread or in the Photoshop Enterprise! thread. There are lots of such adjusted versions.

I don't really care for it. The nacelles are fugly, and the deflector doesn't look right. I do like TMP nods to the torpedo tubes though.

Not fond of it. The first reaction I had was that it looked like a primative Ambassador class. The neck and the engineering hull throw the whole balance off; the deflector looks like its jutting out too much. I can live with the nacelles, but the pylons, neck and a few other odds and ends make it look too advanced. They could have had the "classic" Enterprise and added the detailing that was on the NX-01 if they wanted a more "realistic" look. At least then it would fit into the established timeline easier.

It simply looks kitbashed to me.

By now we have all seen the Big E. The question remains though, do you like it? No reason needs to be given for your choice, but you are more than welcome to do so. Just an unscientific poll to see if the majority likes it or not.

Please note that I'm not one of those guys who was against either this new movie or the remastered episodes that run in syndication. I'm not against a new take on this classic material. In fact I'm in favor of almost everything I've seen and read about the movie but... I'm not yet won over by the design of the ship.

Why?

I hate to say it because I'll sound like a senile old fart at the ripe old age of 33 but... I don't like it because it's not the original design that I so love. It's a cross between the refit Enterprise and the Enterprise-E. Oddly enough I love both of those designs but... I love the classic Connie look more than anything so I was... Disapointed by the new design.

Will I get used to the new look? Doubtless I will but... For now I'm... disturbed.

I'll get over it I'm sure if the movie is good. Sure as shit it's not affecting my excitement about this flick.

I think it comes down to the fact that many of us simply don't think this design is "extremely gorgeous" or even "somewhat attractive in the right light after a couple beers"; sure, some don't like it because it is so different, but speaking for myself, and possibly others, I just don't think it is as graceful and as balanced a design as TOS or TMP. It's like the Chevy HHR - as a PT Cruiser owner, I know what the original design looked like, and the copy tried to look like it while also making changes just for the sake of change, rather than either actually improving upon the original or exploring design ideas that made it 'as good as' the original. One doesn't have to be stuck in the past, nor a nostalgic diehard, to just call a spade a spade. Especially when one has seen just how good the original design can look - compared to other examples of 'current cinematic designs - with comparatively minor and subtle detailing; I think the silhouette and the major details of the original series ship are still more than pleasing, and more than futuristic enough, when judged by "today's standards." Based on that, why should I have to accept what I see as simply a poor overall design?

Voted NO. I don't hate the design, as such, I just don't like it as THE Enterprise. Like I've seen in this or another of the many threads, it looks like a caricature of the E, or a strange kitbash of 2 of the other Enterprises.
It would make an OK Fed. ship, it's better than some of the ships we got over 25 seasons of non-TOS Trek.
I think they could have reeled in just as many new movie-goers with a design that was closer in proportions to the original(s). Gabe's design would have suited me fine.

And, just a thought, what are the chances this is a FAAAAAKE put out there by Abrams just to see how many of our heads explode upon seeing it? Isn't he pretty good at screwing with fan's heads?

Or (in another long stretch), this is what it looks like in the beginning, the secondary hull gets destroyed, and the saucer gets mated to a new secondary hull that looks more like what we expected?

Feh. Never believed it was dead for one moment. Star Trek is just too lucrative a lure. I figured five years, tops.

Actually it's 55%-45% with the majority going to the people liking it. Most of the other 45% don't outright hate it, they simply dislike it. Not the same thing.

It doesn't have to do with nostalgia. It doesn't have to do with the '60s. I meant what I said thinking it looks like a cross between the Enterprise-A and the Enterprise-C. I just don't like the way the combination looks.

BTW, it doesn't have to do with 2009 either since it looks like a cross between a design from 1979 and a design from 1990.

It has nothing to do with the '60s, nothing to do with the '00s, the design is just not my cup of tea. That's all there is to it.

There was a speculative pic of what the Enterprise might look like in the movie some time ago, I don't have a link off-hand, but it looked like a modern version of the Enterprise, was pretty faithful, but it was not exactly the same and I still thought it looked pretty good.

Wellllll, even there, you'll find a lot of folks who think the 1966 Batmobile is THE Batmobile (myself among them). And why? Well, for myself, it's the same reason I expressed above: the original really was a great design! - while the newer one was someone trying to design a vehicle for a "contemporary" audience. (Also, it doesn't hurt that the 1966 model was designed by actual car designers, for the most part, while the later ones were designed by movie effects designers, who were more concerned with "kewl" than anything else). I'd love to see a good attempt at a modernized version of the Futura Batmobile (not the Corgi bastard toy, I assure you ).
