Destiny Book 3 extract in new Star Trek Magazine

Loved the Tasha/Sela piece, and KRAD, great job on Kirk the Maverick.
Thanks! That's something that's stuck in my craw for a few years now, and it was nice to be able to disseminate my bellyaching on the subject to a wider audience. :)

Finished the magazine today, couldn't help myself.

Nice interview with Pine, and I'm so looking forward to this movie.

What have we got to look forward to, Paul? And aren't you the one who decides what goes in??

Within reason (!) yes... OK, as requested a few morsels... The issue we're currently finishing up is a Mirror Universe special (as discussed elsewhere on these boards) which includes a cool timeline to the MU (which is gonna come as a surprise to its author, who hasn't seen the new version!) It's also got a Leonard Nimoy interview which was great fun to do. I'll post more details of that when it's nearer stores.
16 is a Voyager special, with contributions from a large number of TrekLit people including Bob Greenberger, Dave Mack, Chris Bennett, Bob Jeschonek, Mike Martin, David McIntee, Dayton Ward, Kirsten Beyer, Mike Friedman, and our own TerriO talking to Bob Picardo... Plus I've talked to a VERY enthusiastic Bruce Greenwood about playing Captain Pike.
And then we really are in the countdown to the movie...

Is there any chance of having issue 15 having the Enterprise - E on the cover? Such an underrated enterprise. Maybe have an article on the Enterprise E, or the three movies it features in. Just recently subscribed to the magazine. Also, is the magazine going to be monthly any time soon

No, 15 has a Mirror Universe theme so no, there's nothing about the E! There are no plans for the magazine to go monthly, but stay tuned for an announcement about 2009's plans.

Going by some of the emails I get about the fiction, apparently there's a gay agenda, a white agenda, a feminist agenda, a male chauvanist agenda, a conservative agenda, and a liberal agenda.

I figure we'll get around to offending everyone eventually. :bolian:

:lol: All you need is an anti-bipedal agenda...

I rather think that whole IDIC idea was inspired. Was that Gene's idea, or another writer, though?

I think it was his, because he introduced it into the show mainly in order to create a piece of merchandise which he could feature in the show and then sell by mail order. So it was inspired as much by the desire for profit as the desire for peace and equality.

Just curious what facts, if any, you are actually basing that comment on?
Though it's true that we see many things go to market that are based on or seen in a TV show, I don't remember hearing anywhere where Roddenberry created anything that we saw in any of the series specifically because he thought he could market it.
I wonder how many people purchased "LOST" figures/dioramas and felt that perhaps the hatch for example was created specifically because someone wanted to sell a diorama based on it?

I'm not Christopher, but I remember hearing the same thing. It might be in David Gerrold's The World of Star Trek. I know I read it a long, long time ago.

I thought it was common knowledge that the IDIC medallion was created for marketing purposes and then written into the script. I've read the story in multiple places. Memory Alpha mentions it, but doesn't cite a source.

Leonard Nimoy recounts the affair in I Am Spock, including how his disagreement with essentially acting as advertising for Gene Roddenberry's mail-order company caused a riff between the two men.

I seem to recall it's in the original Whitfield Making of Star Trek as well.

I thought about that, too, but TMOST only covers through the second season. I don't have my copy handy, but I recall that the only real mention of the third season comes in the book's closing pages.

There might be something in Inside Star Trek or perhaps Shatner's Star Trek Memories. I know I've read the account in more than one place, but I'm blanking on other sources at the moment.

Can fan art be sent to the magazine for publishing?

It can but you have to be aware that everything that appears in the mag becomes the copyright of the licensor... i.e. it stops being yours.

And lonemagpie: you volunteered for that one! Sympathy: none!
