Colin Salmon (Doctor Moon) possibly cast as new Doctor?

It may prove foolish for the producers to focus primarily on skin-color when casting The Doctor. First, whatever barrier they think they would breaking has been broken long ago. Do they really think they would be making a positive statement about race by casting a black doctor? I just helped elect a black President of the United States. How strong a statement can Doctor Who make after that?
Here's a novel idea. They should look at the best actors they can no matter skin color, age, or gender. After all, Barack Obama was elected not because he was black, but because people felt he was the best person for the job. Let's remember, they're not picking the lead actor for the newest Law & Order spin-off or some hospital drama. Not just any actor will work as The Doctor. Hire the actor who most has that intangible Doctor quality that the best Doctors have had. If that happens to be a black actor or actress, fantastic, but the producers shouldn't limit their choices. Their first duty should be to the show and not to some sense of furthering racial progress, because I get the feeling that society is already ahead of them.

Since they've never said they won't be focusing on picking the best actor, your advice is pretty well unnecessary. There's female Doctor and black Doctor speculation every time the topic comes up in the national media, but it comes from the media, not the producers. If they hire a black actor it will be, as you suggest, because they think he (or she) is the best for the job. Leaping to a different conclusion will only make it harder for any black Doctor to be taken seriously.

^ whilst yes they should pick the best actor (not actress) for the job, I dont think them planning to hrie a black guy, would really limit there options, we have seen over the past couple of weeks very good suggestions for black actors who could play the Doctor very well.

Considering the names of two black actors have been floated in the media, there may be a bit more truth to these rumors than normal. It would also suggest that the producers may be focusing on casting the first black Doctor. However, it's impossible to tell at this point. I just hope they pick a great successor for Tennant regardless of race.

Because as with the America election it's a lot easier in the 21st Century to be sexist rather than racist (Just ask Hilary!) ;)

Besides a female Doctor would be kinda silly, not saying it couldn't work and I could think of a couple of suggestions off the top of my head, but the potential to jump the shark would be way too high to contemplate IMO.

Anyway we have Jenny now if we want a female Doctor, or they could always bring Romana back...or the Rani :p

why don't they want a female doctor? :( booo
I dont think it was ever said in the program, but in my mind a Time Lord or Lady should stay the same sex when they regenerate.

They did have a lady Doctor on a comedy special (cant remember if it was Children in Need or Comic Relief) about 10/12 years ago though.

Given that regeneration is such a radical chance in an individuals genetic makeup it's hard to imagine it isn't possible--but no as far as I know there's no evidence anywhere in the Who history of it happening outside of The Curse of Fatal Death...although that was written by Moffat!

As the guy right above you pointed out. :)

I like Colin Salmon, but he doesn't really strike me as The Doctor. More like a new Brigadier type character.

I used to work in the press, and we had a saying about The Sun.

"There are white lies, big lies, huge lies and Sun exclusives!"

On the subject of a female Doctor - as far as I'm concerned, he's a male Time Lord. I don't think the character would work as a woman. If people think it's sexist to think so, whatever.

There are some things about the make-up of the character that should remain consistent, imho. However, skin pigmentation doesn't come under that banner. A black, asian or arab Doctor? If it's acted well, it works. Colin Salmon wouldn't work.

And they idea that they shouldn't cast a black Doctor because of some hare-brained idea that Black people are "in vogue" right now... what? That's nonsense. Obama got the job because he was the best man for it, not because he doesn't need a sunbed. It's saddening that some people appear to have missed that message.

I don't think Colin Salmon is the best actor for the job either, but I'd be willing to be persuaded if he were cast. I think a female Doctor could work, but it would need to be a good actress, and there would need to be a good storyline planned to it rather than juvenile "omg I'm a girl" jokes and lines and unthought out stories where there's no difference between if he was male or female.

I agree, Salmon could do it, but he would be a very different Doctor to the Attention Defecit 10th

They do need a new permanent Brig, so it's not a bad suggestion at all.
Can't we have the old one back first (in Doctor Who, I mean, as opposed to Sarah Jane, and preferably before Tennant leaves)?

I doubt it. Though if they got everyone out of the woodwork for Journey's End, imagine who will turn up for his swansong?
