It may prove foolish for the producers to focus primarily on skin-color when casting The Doctor. First, whatever barrier they think they would breaking has been broken long ago. Do they really think they would be making a positive statement about race by casting a black doctor? I just helped elect a black President of the United States. How strong a statement can Doctor Who make after that?
Here's a novel idea. They should look at the best actors they can no matter skin color, age, or gender. After all, Barack Obama was elected not because he was black, but because people felt he was the best person for the job. Let's remember, they're not picking the lead actor for the newest Law & Order spin-off or some hospital drama. Not just any actor will work as The Doctor. Hire the actor who most has that intangible Doctor quality that the best Doctors have had. If that happens to be a black actor or actress, fantastic, but the producers shouldn't limit their choices. Their first duty should be to the show and not to some sense of furthering racial progress, because I get the feeling that society is already ahead of them.
