FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

This game is absolutely awesome. They have really captured the original Fallout spirit, it's all there. I'm 15 hours into the game and have JUST done the second main quest quest (finding the radio station).

Bethesda has done an incredible job and they really deserve the success.

Only problem I've had so far is that my xbox360 disc hangs a lot.

This game does bad things to my productivity. Hours just fly by. Still in Rivet City, just kinda hangin out and talking to people. The social interaction is definitely a step above Oblivion.

Heh, just came across my third computer terminal password pulled from sci-fi. So far I've noticed:

1138 (From THX-1138)
15 16 23 42 (Part of Lost's number sequence)
NC-C1864 (Reliant's registry from Wrath of Khan)

Yeah, I've heard it helps to have multiple saves in different places in the game as you progress because it hangs and freezes so much. My friend has already had problems with it and he's only about 7-10 hours in to the game.

Yeah, I kind of want to avoid getting companions because I'm afraid they'll explode into meat chunks.

can ol dogmeat stand up to a super mutant brute?

For a bit, he makes a pretty good distraction for ya.
If he gets hurt too bad you can always just give him one of your stem packs.

In a case or 2 he has actually gotten the killing blow.

I ask because I just got to rivet town and am about to go to that super brute den where the charater's father was last seen

When I know it's gonna be a big fight I just take him out of harm's way and have him wait for me to come back and get him.

Yeah. I had the Brotherhood of Steel companion of awhile. I got tired of reloading saves every time she did something really stupid and let her die for good. Even after setting her to using ranged weapons, she'd charge a group of Mercs or super mutants and get gibbed. No more companions for me.

I can understand why they aren't invincible because you can just have them win the game for you, but they should have extraordinarily more health and there should be a way to easily heal them (or, hell, you should be able to give them stims and they should heal themselves).

Agreed. Especially being a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. She seemed rather weak. I'd be happy if they were just smarter, at least. They see something hostile and they charge in.

What do you have to do to get the Brotherhood of Steel armor to work?
I've found like 3 sets already and sold off 2.

You can get power armor training from the Brotherhood of Steel at the Citadel, but I don't believe you can access it until you get a ways into the main quest chain. You can find it on the map, but the Brotherhood won't let you in until then.

This game is seriously bad for my productivity, the hours just seam to slip on by. Hard to say where I'm at, given the non-linear nature but I'm at level 18 and I've been to Rivet City, GNR, Vault 106 though I've only recently made my way to Tenpenny Tower. I'd assumed that since I didn't nuke Megaton like they asked and with mercs chasing me all over the wasteland that it'd be a very unhealthy place to visit. So when I did I came locked and loaded...all for nothing as it turned out as my speech was up to 100 and I talked my way through that quest. No companions for me yet, as if they're anything like they were in the last games they're probably only good for carrying loot.

Out of curiosity, shall we have a quick show of hands as to how many rigged the nuke or deactivated it? Personally I always go the "hero" route first time out though I fully intend to replay as an utter bastard on my second go.

If you have the pc version and you want to make your companions essential NPC's here are some console codes:

SetEssential 000156f6 1 <-- charon
SetEssential 0006a772 1 <--dogmeat
SetEssential 000156e5 1 <-- Star paladin cross
SetEssential 00000a71 1 <--- jericho
SetEssential 0003d34e 1 <--- fawkes
SetEssential 00003a22 1 <-- sydney
SetEssential 000156a2 1 <--- clover
SetEssential 00027f65 1 <--- butch

Input everything up to the 1 in to the console. (which you can access using the ~ key) So now they'll go unconscious instead of dying.

Personally I only made my dog essential.
