It's time to pop in the DVD; Hugo Weaving did an outstanding job of giving a mask emotion. :bolian:

Is that all?

Guy Fawkes Day is a proper date, to remember Gunpowder Plot and all, not just a day to watch a film on..

Anyway, the book pwns the film.. if your gonna do something for the 5th.. read the far superior book.

The movie kicks ass. Its tightly done and despite the naysayers is true in tone to the source while updating it in places.

This is in my personal top 10 movies for this decade thus far.

Awesome film!!

Fawkes was a terrorist. His group's goal was to overthrow the government so they could get back to oppressing protestents instead of catholics

Here is the explosion.

There was a great documentary about how big the explosion would have been. They set up the same amount of gunpowder in a replica of the houses of parliment and set it off. Quite impressive.

V for Vendetta is one of the greatest movies of all time. It's a soaring testament to the ability of the human spirit to overthrow & transcend tyranny. I get chills every time I watch it. It's filled with so many great performances. Natalie Portman makes you completely forget how crappy she was in the Star Wars prequels. Hugo Weaving delivers a truly mesmerizing performance despite never seeing his eyes or his face. (Ha! Take that Spider-Man films!) And John Hurt has never been better. ("I want everyone to remember WHY THEY NEED US!")

That explosion video is interesting, although that brief clip makes it very difficult to get an idea of the scale.

Guy Fawkes

What drove him to it?
Fawkes was really just a patsy for Catesby's conspiracy. Fawkes was the one to put the gunpowder under the houses of Parliament, and he was the one caught red-handed.

What drove the conspiracy was the question of succession to the English throne. The Protestant/Catholic question hadn't been settled since Henry broke with Rome, and his successors had either maintained Protestantism (Edward and Elizabeth) or reimposed Catholicism (Mary) as the state religion. Catholics wanted a Catholic monarch on the English throne, and the intention of the Gunpowder Plot was to assassinate James (who was Presbyterian) and place his daughter, Elizabeth, on the throne as a Catholic monarch who could be controlled.

The plot was foiled. James basically maintained the religious status quo during his reign. Except for his belief in the Divine Right of Kings. That was new -- and dangerous -- and would lead, in part, to the English Civil War.

Religious extremists, a terrorist plot to blow up a major landmark, torture of terrorist suspects and a presumption after the effect that somehow every member of that religion was a terrorist.

History is scary sometimes...
