Negative opinions of nice writers

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the idea of a nice writer. In my experience, they're all incredible bastards.

Yes, I'm looking at you, Pearson.

*Looks up at ceiling, shakes fist, yells.* "Leisner!"

You thought you'd get away with this because I mentioned the other day I haven't been BBSing as much as I used to. But now you know, I'm watching you, Leisner. Watching!

To the original poster..... I hear ya. I was assigned to write a review of a book that was not only by a nice person, it was a friend/close acquaintance whose wedding I attended! And I didn't really care for the book. I felt like a jerk but in the end I had to write my honest opinion.

In a super-close relationship, I would beg off, citing conflict of interest/possible inability to be objective. But you really can't play that card often, because the field of SF&F is small enough that eventually you'll probably know most people in the field.

We... willnot... fight... foryouramusement!

Awww... c'mon, Leisner.

In the words of the immortal Heath Ledger...

"Why...so...SERIOUS?

...LET'S PUT A SMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILE ON THAT FACE!!!"
(Thunderclap)

Does this also apply to comic book artists? :p

The best example is probably WildStorm's DS9 mini, "n-Vector", which had quite a unique style and took ST fans by surprise, most of whom rejected his work outright (but avid comic readers knew the artist's style well). Due to the unusual storyline, the art did suit the text and the art eventually grew on me.

But the mini-series certainly got some bad reviews.

Rob Liefeld drew n-Vector? That explains SO much.

Oh. That's what I get for assuming. And not checking. And not sleeping.

[Jedi Mind Trick]You will ignore this blabbering moron...[/Jedi Mind Trick]

Keith and the others are absolutely right. Most writers have no problems with bad reviews unless the reviewer gets personal. I've gotten tons of bad reviews over the years, but the only ones that get under my skin are the ones where the reviewer presumes to read my mind and questions my motives and/or fannish credentials:

"Cox obviously dashed this one off for the money.

"Cox obviously hates Kirk."

"Cox has obviously never watched the tv show."

Attack my writing all you want, just don't assume you know how and why I wrote the book.
