That is IT! I'm DONE. I will NOT see this movie!

That is one step up from this place, I can tell you this much...... *sighs*

Our Rockingham is a village, consisting of about 20 houses and two pubs. Oh, and a bus stop. :) No cinemas, not in Gretton, Rockingham, Lyddington, Corby and whatnot.

So.... like I said, a step up. But the villages in Northamptonshire have a rustic aesthetic that's very charming and very English. Just...very rustic. At least we have internet.

That Safeway incident happened before my time here, I would like to point out. By the way I love the local slang- "yous" as a plural for "you". I'm not kidding, I've actually heard people say that.
thankfully I lived in the Great Oakely area, the nicer part of Corby, and I left before to much damage was done to my vocabulary (my parents both being from Leicestershire) dont forget alot of them have Scottish routes.

I recall the ASDA there, quite big if I remeber it rightly.

Everyone here says people are Scottish around here as if it were something bad. Anyway, yeah, the ASDA is huge, and the bus stop right in front of it is where I catch my mini-coach back to Gretton when nobody's driving me.

But it's strange how people in an area that is still part of the Midlands will think someone from the South is Australian. I mean, I've lived in Manchester, and they didn't think that. I think this part of the country is not as bad as its reputation, but it sure is peculiar... and memorable.

Are you a Leicester fan? Everyone else around here seems to be. :)

lol no, I moved from Leicestershire when I was about 1.

your posts have given me reason to look up Corby on Google Maps, looks like there has been alot of development since I left, this 50 metre pool for one, and the new shopping centre, and whatever the hell Oakley Vale is.

As to the Scottish the workers for the Steel factory's, came down from Scotland, used to have girls doing highland dancing in the school assembly's

I had visited Corby twice in the past to visit some friends, but I honestly don't know much about the place, except for the industrial estate (where the ASDA is, too), because that's where I work, and the road to Gretton.

I think it's pretty fascinating to travel a hundred miles up north and find this completely different culture.

What's Peterborough like, then? You got a cinema? :)

thankfully I only live near Peterborough, but there are parts of it, that are as rough (if not more so) than Corby, that said we do have a cinema, its stuck out on Industrial estate (but I didn't see Nemesis there), so its near impossible for non drivers like us to get there, that said I have seen cars stolen from there, so im not sure I would want to park my car there.

Like any town it has its good & bad parts, but I would say more bad than good, meanwhile the shopping centres arnt to bad, even if there are more & more empty stores every couple months, one was raided by the police and shut down for not paying the rent.

the A&E is a bit of dump but they are building a new one, meanwhile the redevelopment of the city centre is stuck in discussion, but there is a chance when it finally happens there will be a cinema attached.

We also have a grey hound track, and ice rink, its not all bad, any time you go to Hampton you get the feeling you are in a Sim City, as you notice new things that were not built before, and that the housing estates getting ever bigger.

We have far to many Costa Coffee shops, but im sure even Corby has that problem, if those photos ive seen of the town centre redevelopment is anything to go by, and that 50 metre pool they are building looks alot better than the one I used to go to with my school.

The Costa Coffee shops do have a tendency to pop up everywhere, don't they? It's like a plague, I honestly don't think people drink that much coffee.

This really is the equivalent to the Wild West, isn't it? Very different from what I'm used to, but I guess that's the industry for ya.

So you don't drive as well? We must be the only people in the area. :)

well im taking driving lessons currently, but yeah im fed up with Costa Coffee shop, I dont use them, there is a small independent I like outside of Peterborough that I go to. We also have a Starbucks that I refuse to go to as well.

We have a coffee shop in Gretton owned by this woman named Linda, and she bakes her own cakes. I think you would like that.

Soon I'll be the only person around here who doesn't have a driving license.

:p

oh I just thought of something, have you still got that drive thou chippy? if I recall correctly that was near to *cough*Wal*cough*Mart*cough* ASDA.

Yep, there's the Rockingham Speedway when you leave Coby (industrial estates)- if you turn right at Phoenix Parkway opp Rockingham Speedway (north-east), you'll find yourself on the road to Gretton.

This race thing didn't attract as many people as the guys who built it in the first place thought it would. Honestly, I couldn't care less, but it's one more of those "we used to have that in Corby, but it's all gone to shit" stories. Just like the steel industry. I hope the automotive one stays alive, given my current occupation.

But is the Rockingham Speedway in the US close to a village called Rockingham, too? I thought that was why they called it that.... they have a lovely pub there. :)
It is a similar story here. NASCAR (my dad is a retired race car driver) took the race away from Rockingham so the speedway closed down and the town went mostly to shit here, too.
A former driver bought the speedway and uses it for drag racing and a race car driving experience. Hopes are that it will attract larger races soon.
I live in Salisbury (also a stolen English name).

I'll be catching my bus today at ASDA, I can take a look if you want to....

Anyway, we're on topic, because I have said over and over again that I won't see the film until I get someone to drive me.... or unless I get that job in Germany, where they have proper public transport and cinemas everywhere. :p

Sector 7: funny, I've lived in the Detroit area for 6 months (in 2004), and was suprised to see how many place-names are English around there. people also like to name their kids after English place-names. I've met someone called Corby once, no joke.

But our Rockingham and yours bear a striking (and frightening) similarity, don't they?

Y'know, I saw the title of this thread, and my mind read it to me in the voice of Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I'm just sayin'.

I'm bored enough right now. I work close to the ASDA, 20 minute footwalk tops.

Really? I used to work in a supermarket as well, in Germany. And a Toys'R'Us.

So I've yet to meet a Corby native (or resident, for that matter) who has anything nice to say about the place. It's not that bad, but I'm only ever either at work or the ASDA, so can't really say much.

:p
Why? The digression is far more interesting and less predictable.
but its just people slagging off the places they live or used to live.
Which is still more interesting than another rant from "purists" about how this movie will destroy Star Trek forever or some such drivel.
