The actor is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Tennant.
If he lands the part, the 44-year-old will become the first ever black doctor.
The star has already appeared in two episodes of the show playing Roderick alongside previous doctor, Christopher Eccleston.
He is a popular comic actor and has appeared in Peep Show, Jekyll and Green Wing.
I apologise for using the term 'black' actor. I always had that term but I could fit 'actor of African descent' in the title.

I guess you could have the black doctor vs the black dalek.

Ah see, there I go again.

Leaving aside the fact that there's already an 11th Doctor releated thread, why mention his colour at all? You wouldn't say David Tennant - White Actor - Is Leaving The Series, would you?

is he the one who was on the Weakest Link segment with Rose?

I love how nearly all the names on that article are people who have been in the show before, or people who have been rumoured for the role before.

It would be disingenuous to act like it wouldn't be noteworthy. And I'm sure it would have some impact on the historical episodes just as it did with Martha.

But the real question is if this guy is "Doctor-y" because not everyone could pull that off. I'm not familiar with his work so I can't say.

Exactly. If he is cast, he will be the first black/non-white/person of colour actor to play the role. I'm not up on the pc terms from country to country but it would indeed be noteworthy.

He's been in DW before, played Roderick at the end of S1, the guy who wanted his money from the game show and didn't believe in Daleks.

I've also seen him in Moffat's Jekyll, playing the head of a Torchwood type institute and he's done a lot with Mitchell and Webb, appearing in the Numberwang sketches and as Johnson on Peep Show.

He's good. I enjoy his work. I just can't see him as the Doctor though.

Of those on the list though, the absolute last one I want to see in the role is Russel Tovey. I don't care how old he is and whether or not RTD is pushing for him to get it, he looks like he's 17.

Josan, fair comments and I'd probably agree (his American accent in Jekyll was bad) if I hadn't seen him play the Maquis De Carabas is Neverwhere a few (more than a few) years ago. If he could play the Doctor like that he would be fab.

Much as I love that people who might play the Doctor in 2010 are interesting enough that BBC News put together an article, they didn't do much of a job.

It'll never be Morrissey precisely because he's playing "The Other Doctor," who will obviously be an impostor. Sean Pertwee was the "scoop" of a spoiler source who also said Tennant was staying for series five, so... James Nesbitt has said he wouldn't want the role and Moffat has shot down Nesbitt speculation in the past. Russell Tovey is only on the list because of RTD's passing comment in an e-mail many months ago, which is clearly just more of his natural effusiveness; and RTD won't be involved in casting the eleventh Doctor anyway.

Skin color would easilly be changed by regeneration. Considering it changes body weight, height, hair style, and the like-- changing the amount of melanin pigmentation would be a pretty minor alteration for a regeneration.

Certainly more plausible than the Doctor changing gender.
Or becoming half-human for one regeneration. ;)

You can be sure: there's no way they'd introduce the eleventh Doctor and have him play a substantial story role fully a year ahead of his actual arrival. There'd be no better chance to undermine Tennant's final year and kill the enthusiasm for a new lead actor.

I tend to agree with that, but its possible they could leave it vauge as to, is he an imposter or is he a future Doctor, then we find out either way when Ten regenerates.

Yeah, just like they never did with Colin Baker in that Peter Davison's story.

Oh no wait.

It's interesting that his name is floating about,I know myself and a few other people on here have mentioned him at times, but I didn't think he was on the real world's radar as much.

Maybe it's that I want it to be true, but I have a niggling suspicion that, much as with Tennant, we'll get a fairly quick announcment.

Oh give me a FREAKIN FRAKKIN FRUKKIN break.

If the above quote offended you, I'd say you should stay off the internets all together.

Sick to fucking death of namby pamby PC cry babies. Run home to mummy before I tie you to a chair and force you to watch a "Love Thy Neighbour"(HEY BLACK SAMBO!!!)and Alf Garnet marathon back to back.

And PS - before you resort to the usual PC default cry of "RACIST!!!1!", check my sig. I am all for a BLACK man leading the free world for the next eight yeras. God knows stupid old white men have had a fair chance at fucking it up, at least let's make it even and see if somebody else can do better!

I remember when Lenny Henry was the Doctor back in the 80s. He did two fabulous things. He told Peri to SHUT UP... And then he shagged her. :)
