NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

I still have to wonder why Texas went one-on-one with Crabtree, with only 8 seconds left in the game. The man is probably the bet WR in the nation ... and you're guarding him with only one coverage guy? :vulcan:

Unbelievable.

Have you ever seen a kickoff from the 7 1/2 yard line?

Tech can't rest, they've got Oklahoma State in next week.

Coast Guard?

WTF???
Yeah, I don't know. All I did was point out that my parents have gone to games at the AFA, Annapolis and West Point - something I thought was cool - and JM1776 tries to start an argument over my not including the Coast Guard on that list. I don't get it.

Anyway, glad to see TTech win for obvious reasons. That was quite a game. Forget Purdue's hook and ladder - I think I know which play is going to win the Pontiac Game Changing Performance this week.

Where was Texas' defense on the final drive. It almost seemed like they gave up after they scored. That was too damn effecient of a final drive for the number 1 team in the country to give up. Looks like Oklahoma and Penn St are your new number 1 and 2 this week.

No, that was really bizarre.

Love the enthusiasm of the fans, hate the discipline.

Act like you been there before!!!

Thanks, Bear. ;)

Although, in their defense, they haven't really been there before. This was their first defeat of a #1 team ever.

Maybe I've got good old days syndrome, but wasn't it a better football world when you could actually go out and tear the goalposts down?

And of course, there's the current Number 2: Alabama

I thought Oklahoma was Number 2. I was going to come back to edit it, but not now because of you. ;) Bama's number 1

JM'S Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending November 1st, 2008

1 – Texas Tech (9-0)

It may be the briefest reign, but they're undefeated and knocked off the clear number one. The Red Raiders have earned the top spot.

2 – Penn State (9-0)

It seems almost impossible to envision a Lions defeat before New Year's.

3 – Alabama (9-0)

You beat Arkansas? That's not so ba– What? What was that? Arkansas State? Well ... that's pretty much a joke.

4 – Texas (8-1)

They now have the highest-quality loss in the country.

5 – Oklahoma State (8-1)

And they're not far back.

6 – Oklahoma (7-1)

A tad behind the Cowboys because OSU played Texas tougher.

7 – Florida (7-1)

These guys are looking absolutely unstoppable now, with consecutive beatdowns of LSU, Kentucky and Georgia.

8 – Utah (8-0)

Struggling against New Mexico ain't gonna win over any voters, guys.

9 – Southern California (7-1)

First Ohio State lost its second game, then so did Georgia. If Cal knocks off USC, my satisfaction will be complete.

10 – Boise State (8-0)

The Broncos cracked the top ten sooner than I'd anticipated ... and Fresno State's looking like less of a threat every week.

11 – Texas Christian (9-1)

TCU–Utah is starting to look like quite a big game ... and TCU–Air Force ain't far behind.

12 – Ohio State (7-2)

You have to wonder if Rodriguez's crew might not just put it all together for three hours and knock off the Buckeyes.

13 – West Virginia (6-2)

The smoke has begun to clear in the Big East ... and once again the Mountaineers, much to my dismay, are rising to the top.

14 – Missouri (7-2)

Let's assume struggling with Baylor is an aberration.

15 – Georgia (7-2)

I always look forward to that point in the season when Bulldogs' fans have to give up their dreams of a national championship.

16 – Louisiana State (6-2)

They've slowed, but not yet stanched, the bleeding.

17 – Ball State (8-0)

Could they possibly grab a BCS bid if TCU, Utah and Boise falter? Hey, if there are enough two- and three-loss big-name teams, anything's possible—not likely, but possible.

18 – North Carolina (6-2)

They play Georgia Tech in yet another ACC "loser out of the top twenty-five" game on Thursday.

19 – Brigham Young (8-1)

They're winning again, but the heart seems to have gone out of them.

20 – Pittsburgh (6-2)

I know the Irish aren't world-beaters, but credit the Panthers for shaking off their loss to Rutgers and the subsequent early-game struggles against Notre Dame to win a thriller.

21 – Maryland (6-2)

They lead the ACC Atlantic. Holy cow ... or, rather, fear the turtle.

22 – California (6-2)

I've ranked them just in time for their annual beatdown from USC.

23 – Michigan State (8-2)

They're now winning these close games. That's not typical of this program. You have to start thinking things are changing in East Lansing.

24 – Georgia Tech (7-2)

The win over FSU has got to feel good.

25 – Air Force (7-2)

You could make an argument for any of ten teams in this spot. I'll give it to the Falcons because they're remaining a contender on grit, smoke and mirrors.

Maybe I've got good old days syndrome, but wasn't it a better football world when you could actually go out and tear the goalposts down?

Yes.

AFTER the game is over...

Hell when I was going to Boston College in 1984 we beat Alabama on the road on national TV. The entire student body stormed our own stadium and tore our own goal posts down!

Good times.

:techman:

My top ten:

1 – Penn State (9-0)

This team's only weakness seems to be its schedule.

2– Texas Tech (9-0)

Great win by the Red Raiders, but wait till next week or the week after before I'm ready to give them #1.

3 - Florida (7-1)

The best team in the SEC right now, but the Ole Miss loss at home was awful.

4 – Alabama (9-0)

Great season, but this team has some glaring flaws. Besides Georgia, the
only winning teams they've beaten are mediocre Ole Miss and Kentucky.

5– Texas (8-1)

They could still probably beat anyone else in the country.

6 – Oklahoma (8-1)

So could these guys.

7 – Oklahoma State (8-1)

What happens if there's a four-way tie in the Big 12 South?

8 – USC (7-1)

Last year, a two loss team won it all, but the Trojans have no chance at the title game.

9 (tie) - Utah (9-0) and Boise State (8-0)

No disrespect to great seasons, but I still think the Mountain West, WAC, Sun Belt, Mid-American, CUSA, and maybe Big East belong in another division than the SEC, Big 12, ect. One hundred plus teams competing for one title seems a bit excessive and unfair to smaller schools like these.

1 – Penn State (9-0)

This team's only weakness seems to be its schedule.

Yeah ... Texas Tech hasn't exactly faced Murderer's Row, either, have they?

I gave the edge to the Red Raiders because their best win is slightly more impressive than PSU's, but ... one can make a strong case for any of the remaining power conference undefeateds. If Texas Tech beats Oklahoma State Saturday, though, they've definitely pushed their resume to the top of the pile.

There's little justification, though, for ranking Florida over Alabama—not when the Tide are undefeated. Don't get me wrong: I think the Gators will beat 'Bama if they play. That loss—at home, no less—to Ole Miss, though, is just way too much an eyesore.

Similar principle applies to USC. Oregon State beat the Trojans and lost to the Utes. Got to give Utah the edge on both common opponent and common sense.

Details, details. If you've never done it before, I think you're forgiven if you're a little early.

:techman:

That's classic.

The AP Poll is out and Alabama is the latest (and probably not last) team this season to hold the top position. What I found surprising is that Texas Tech passed Penn State to grab the number two spot. There's apparently no love for JoePa amongst the AP voters.

Details, details. If you've never done it before, I think you're forgiven if you're a little early.

Why would you forgive massive stupidity? It's like when the fan at a baseball game grabs a ball in play and doesn't understand why he or she is being escorted out of the stadium. Only in this case there were thousands of clueless idiots.

I didn't care who won the game, but on the basis alone of the stupid Tech fans storming the field before it was over, I wish Texas would've scored at the end.
