New to 'Mad Men'

I couldn't find the "Jon Hamm's John Ham" sketch. Basically, it was Jon Hamm promoting a product called "John Ham", which was ham on a toilet paper roll. Get it? "John Ham"? Making fun of his name like that was pretty funny.

I watched the whole show, and I never saw any such skit.

Great epsiode. Looks like the Pete/Peggy scene was the biggest surprise of the episode. Nine months to the next episode is along time. Wish they would have spread the new episodes out so we wouldnt have such a long wait for the next season.

Wow. That Pete/Peggy scene was worth the price of admission. She wanted other things--Peggy Olson is the shape of things to come. I thought it was an excellent directors' choice that Peggy put her hand on Pete's shoulder and squeezed it in a small gesture of affection before leaving the room. I found the depiction of Pete's unfolding depression fascinating as well. He's questioning everything. He had cold and unloving parents, his marriage was a mistake, his father-in-law withdrew his big account and now Peggy gave away his child. I sense potential for growth in Pete. The changing times will be good for him. I can see him becoming a completely different type of person years down the road.

I was so disappointed that Betty took Don back. She should have had the abortioin. That wasn't exactly a happy reunion in the kitchen. Don will be a good boy for a year or so, then he'll start to cheat again. Serial philanderers always do. Betty made the mistake of her life. I notice he didn't come clean about Dick Whitman.

Good for Lois for getting out of the switchboard again. The guys are douches. I can't wait for 1964. :)

Interesting episode...I really enjoyed it! I really have to go back and see the first season now.

I hope Pete doesn't kill himself. That would be a real loss for the show. I love his character.

Nobody wants to discuss the season finale? Very good episode. It took them all season for something to finally happen.

Kind of how I felt as well. I like the show, but it is slow at times.

I like them both, and really liked that scene between them.

I actually wasn't sure *what* she was going to say in that moment before she told him--I think she was hovering between telling him about sleeping with someone else and telling him about the baby. No, neither of them looked happy at all, and I can't help but think back to the episode where he told Roger he was happy things between him and Betty were over.

I don't think he's really done at Sterling Cooper, either. I think he's dedicated to his advertising ideal, but not strong enough, or impractical enough, to walk away from his job.

Is the show jumping ahead two years again?

I don't blame Peggy one bit for not wanting to be shackled to nutbag Pete. But I thought the implication was, she kept the kid and her sis was passing him off as one of hers? Technically she "gave him away" but led Pete to believe she knew where the boy still was because otherwise Pete might become a problem.

Having Don go back to Betty is a disappointing reset button but inevitable. Don can't leave the ad agency because that is the focus of the show. And Betty has to stay with Don or else, why is she on the show?

Ironically, the structure of the show tells us that the wife's reason for being is her husband and the husband's reason for being is his job. :rommie:

I want to see an episode dealing with the Kennedy assassination. Don't skip it!

Well, I'm a bit disappointed they handled the Don/Betty storyline... I was hoping for a bit more. Hell, for a moment I thought that Don would finally return home to find that Betty died in a botched abortion.

Also, I was hoping for more about beard-guy (what's his name?) and the racial issues going down in Mississippi. Didn't the Cuban Missile Crisis and the riots at Ole Miss happen within a few weeks of each other? It seems strange that they just dropped that storyline.

I did like that they made some progress with Pete/Peggy.

Is the show jumping ahead two years again?

Yes, it is. There are some articles quoting Matt Weiner at a few other sites. He feels the Kennedy assasination has been done to death, so they'll jump in time again to early 1964. Pete's one of my favorites, too, Top41. :) He and Peggy are so great.

As much as I love January Jones and her portrayal of Betty, having her die in a botched abortion and Don having to deal with it would have been daring. I'm disappointed she took him back. I don't think she would have had she not been pregnant. I don't expect a happy Draper marriage in 1964. Don's a serial philanderer. He will cheat again, especially if Rachel returns as Weiner is hinting at (Maggie Siff's availability is iffy). Don will decide that Rachel is the love of his life again and probably start sniffing around her once more. He'll feel "trapped." Anybody can make a mistake or have a one night stand if they're furious at their spouse but serial philanderers are a different animal. Don's behavior is classic serial philanderer.

If anyone is interested, Julie McNiven (Hildy) will be guest starring on Supernatural in a two parter in November. She'll be playing a character named "Anna."

Don's future at Sterling Cooper -

Duck thought that Don had a contract. Including at standard "Non-Compete" clause. Which would have prevented him from leaving SC and starting his own agency. But without a contract nothing would prevent him from doing this. He likely would be able to take many of their clients with him. Those companies have trust in his track record. The new British owners know that Draper's got them by the balls. Once Duck mouthed off they were quick to distanced themselves from him.

Bottom line - Don's not going anywhere and things are going to continue to be done the way he wants.

I can't wait to see what extent they address the major Pop Cultural event of 1964. Arguably one of the greatest of all time. The Beatles arrival in the USA and appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Will Harry have the foresight to book advertising on CBS the night of February 9th????

I totally agree; I got the impression too, that the Brits already decided to dump Duck and keep Don instead. Duck has played his part, he isn't needed anymore, Draper in the other hand is not as easily replacable.

And I don't get the love for Pete here, he's a slimy opportunist and he's a jerk. Does he have any redeeming qualities at all?
