Six minute preview of Day the Earth Stood Still before Fringe's Pilot

I am sure everyone else has seen it by now, but I had 3 episodes of Fringe recorded on my DVR and I hadn't watched any yet till late last night! Holy shit, for a couple of minutes I didn't realize that the DTESS preview wasn't Fringe! Has there been a thread with any speculation on it here?? I can't express how truly alien and strange the preview was. It also managed to have an expansive, epic feel. It looks to me that there is some nanotechnology involved in the trailer, and also the possiblity that the Klatu character might also be Gort. He/it definitely appears to have an easy control over machinery/technology. I had already liked the look of the first trailer but the preview has completely won me over. I'll be the first in line on Dec 12th.

Just saw this as well. I had no idea there was a remake in the mill. Looks very different (perhaps in a good way) from the original. I can't wait to find out more.
If anyone is privy to the changes/remake storyline, please let us know.

I'll give almost any movie a chance, remake or not. The existence of this movie does not diminish the original in any way, so why the hostility? How do you know it will suck? Why not remake it? They've remade Shakespeare 10,000 times in one way or another, some great some terrible. If they hadn't, we probably wouldn't still be reading The Bard.

And if the basic premise of the movie is a great one (which is part of the reason the original is a classic), wouldn't you sort of expect it's premised to be reused? It's a 57 year old movie! Would it make you fell better if it was called something else or would you claim they ripped off TDTESS anyways and condemn it without seeing it?

I think it looks spooky, and the effects are gorgeous. I hope it's good. And maybe this movie will inspire some people to seek out the original? You know, people in their teens and 20s who don't normally spend their days seeking out black and white science fiction older than their parents? Ever consider that? No one ever mentions it in these discussions but I think it's a valid point.

Give the movie a chance, especially if word of mouth is good. Wouldn't you like to be wrong?

I watched the fringe pilot when it aired, I had no idea there was a preview before it!

And I agree with the "doesn't need to be remade, especially with Keanu" school of thought.

I've always liked Gort, I like the clean lines and jointless seams. I think he works really well within the context of the film.

I'm not against the idea of a remake. What I do hope this version deals with is the inherent instability in the premise. Did no one ever think to ask Klaatu what right he thinks he has to impose his people's will on Earth? These robots have essentially turned all of their subject peoples into a slave race. Might humanity prefer death rather than live under such an absolute dictatorship? What happens if the robots malfunction? I hope the remake deals with these questions.
