In this one Ezri Rocks!!!!

I have been a bit hard on Ezri in a few of my previous posts, however, one must give credit where credit is do. I just finished watching "Field of Fire" and just loved her performance. Even Jadzia had problems dealing with Joran Dax, so for Ezri for having been joined for only a few months and dealing with Joran the way she did, SHE ROCKED...

Field of Fire is one of the most overlooked episodes of the entire series.

Along with others such as In The Pale Moonlight, it's an episode that I use to bring the uninitiated into the franchise.

Meh... I didn't like any of the Ezri episodes. I think the best was probably Afterimage when Garak put her in place.

I really agree about Field of Fire being underrated--I liked that one!

But you know, I don't know why everybody's SO unsympathetic to Ezri about the way Garak acted in "Afterimage." Is it just that people hate Ezri so much that they love the thought of anybody smacking her around?

They were BOTH in the wrong, yes--Ezri thinking it would be simple to just walk up and fix him, and making assumptions...and Garak for snapping off like that and trying to flat-out DESTROY her.

Having been in the same kind of situation as Ezri--in a job where I felt way over my head, getting serious heat from my boss, and being right around the same age and also very insecure...I could very much empathize with her. VERY much so. It SUCKS...it was one of the worst feelings ever.

Some of it is a hang over from the fact that Ezri replaced Jadzia, which is why some people like what Garak said even though arguably it isn't true. Some of it is the the idea is the idea that Garak can do no wrong and that he's a master at every thing.

It's a great episode. They couldn't have picked a better actor to succeed Terri Farrel. In fact, they probably regret not getting Nicole de Boer from the beginning.

The best I can say is that she didn't annoy me as much as usual- she took some initiative, was reasonably tough, didn't become controlled by Joran... but she still seems so... young... and wimpy.

Yeah... the writers dropped the ball on Ezri.

After watching Jadzia blossom into a self-assured character over six seasons, having Ezri come in as young, short, confused, and emotionally off-balance was worse than a rewind to Season 1... it diminished the entire final season of the show.

I understand the point they were trying to make in portraying newly-Dax Ezri as 'traumatized', but by the seventh season it wasn't a point that needed to be made; we already all understood the process well enough that it didn't need to be portrayed again. Especially not during an unfolding War/Ascending-God arc.

I do love deBoer though, and don't think she was done justice by Ezri.

I'm not sure its a matter of saying that Garak can do no wrong- as seen in ITPM- he's more willing to do things that a Fed. won't to win, to get things done, and it not as concerned (usually) about the minority, or about the guilt a few people will have to carry to get the best overall result. He complains in R&S that the Federation has rules for war-which makes it harder to win. This means both that his upbringing was radically different, but that his viewpoint is too- and it doesn't seem like he entirely wants to change, tho he is a bit more "SF" then a lot of other Cardassians. But Garak does suffer- technically betraying his fellow people to free them from the Dominion was still hard for a very nationalistic person- and he was cracking. His overall goals are good- his means of getting them are often contrary to what a moral person would do. It raises questions like "does the end justify the means" and if you just pretend you don't see what he's doing- are you really any better? Just the rhetorical questions that go through your mind as you reevaluate the person you are when you see someone like Garak- the lies, the subterfuge etc. works... but is there another way? One in which you don't betray your values to get the same result? Etc.
