Quantum of Solace to be released in UK 17-days before US premiere!

For those of you on the otherside of the pond, please do not spoil it for us in the United States.

Thanks.

The next James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, will open in China before it opens in the United States, China Daily, the official English-language newspaper published by the Chinese government, said today (Wednesday). "The 22nd movie of the '007' series, Quantum of Solace will make its Chinese debut on November 5, whilst audiences in North America have to wait until November 14 to enjoy James Bond's new adventure," the newspaper exulted. (The film is due to have its official premiere at a royal benefit in London on October 29.)

Ouch, as a dedicated Bond fan and an American, I am hurt.

However, It's about time you Brits got a movie before us. If I recall correctly, Britain often has to wait long periods to get certain American Blockbusters.

And yet there are some people who will have to wait later than 5th November to see the film. For the Americans just avoid the spoilers. I've had to that with many movies, and will do with Quantum of Solace, as it's released here on the 19th November.

Considering it's a Bond movie, we should always get them first.

Just avoid the spoilers as we avoid spoilers of American movies that open earlier there than elsewhere.

That'd be every movie, then. We get the sum total of Doctor Who, Torchwood and the occasional Bond movie first. You guys get pretty much everything else.

We won't even tell you about the part where Bond _____'s _____ with the giant rusty _____ and then ____'s _____ _____ from behind.

I'm from Canada. Usually we get American AND British stuff late. :P

There's a preview screening in London tomorrow evening, UK time, so be warned, spoilers could be on the loose from Saturday.

Actually, some spoilers are already out, as the film has been screened a few times. Click if you wish, resist if you can.

- The James Bond theme does not appear in full until the closing credits, much like Casino Royale.

- The movie does not OPEN with the "gunbarrel sequence." It ends with it, just before the closing credits.

- The movie is front-loaded, action-wise, with two major chase sequences in the first half-hour or so. They reportedly are much more memorable than the climactic action sequence.

- About two-thirds of the movie takes place in the South American deserts. This is reflected in the opening titles' design aesthetic (e.g., when Bond fires his gun, sand pours out).

- The film ends in Russia, with James Bond confronting Vesper's boyfriend. The film ends with a "clean break" from the Casino Royale narrative, as evidenced by the film's final shot (the aforementioned gunbarrel). It DOES NOT set up for a "Part 3," or anything like that.

Um... I believe that article was speaking about China. So why it was linked to when wanting to talk about the UK is beyond me. The Brits get it on October 31, that's only 14 days before North America.

My prediction is that a lot of people will download it from the internet prior to its North American release.

Considering over 70% of Casino Royale's 590 million dollar gross came from international markets this isn't too surprising.

My prediction is that a lot of people will download it from the internet prior to its North American release.

Likely, but what a way to ruin the experience.

Yeah I'm not sure why they think it's a good idea to make Americans wait 17 days when bittorrent exists. I would imagine both the UK and US versions are going to be exactly the same, why not release them on the same day in both countries?

Personally, I'll just wait till the 6th and go see it at the theatre. I cannot watch those shitty telecine screeners anymore. R5 releases are a different story though. ;)

Even though its an American film?

As far as I know, this is being done to curb illegal distribution of the film overseas, though why MGM didn't think to just release the thing on the same day everywhere is beyond me. Oh well. I'll be working on location the night it comes out here in the States, so I'll have to wait anyway.

The American release is (presumably) being timed so it's fresh in the cinemas for the Thanksgiving holiday (which Britain doesn't have), and also perhaps so it comes out once all the election brou-ha-ha is over.
The UK release is timed so it can have its premiere at the start of the London Film Festival.
So, good reasons for the release date on each side of the atlantic. They just can't be kept in sync.
