Star Trek covers EW

i've accpeted the fact that if Star Trek is to continue then we are going to have to accept certain things being redsigned or even cannon being rewritten. sure, its hard to accept a new bridge when we grew up with the look of the original, but i'm not going to dwell on it.

Apparently Kirk's black shirt may be a Captains Only variant. It does have a delta shield on it.

Which of course, is quite in line with a long tradition in Trek of such variants, from TOS to TMP to TNG, so what's the big deal? (Not saying you think it's a big deal Pavonis, but some people on some of the boards seem to be getting all twisted about it.)

I think keeping Pine in black gives him an interesting visual edge, since everyone else is in their normal colors. I actually kind of like it -- gives him a distinction.

I'm surprised at the brightness of the bridge and the interiors -- for some reason I thought they'd be much darker, but I'm satisfied with the results.

Nobody owes you squat.

J Michael Stracynski has said he wants to do a reboot.
The golden boy of these forums, Ronald Moore, has also said he wants to do a reboot.
I don't see why Abrams and his pals can't just come out and say that this thing IS a reboot.
Are they not confident enough in their movie they don't want to risk alienating Trek fans by calling it a reboot?
They shouldn't be, because most of you are already willing to go with a reboot.
So they should just say so.

Gotta love Trek crazies. I get a kick out of some of the nutty reactions all the new stuff receives. It reminds me that a certain segment of fandom simply can't be paid attention.

Here's a wild reason: Maybe it's actually not a reboot.

As has been insinuated before, this movie will create an alternate timeline.

What I'm gathering is that you can't even wait that long, that the entire movie is a reboot from the beginning because the outfits and surroundings don't look exactly the same as it did in 1967.

That being the case, I think you need psychological help and to be vehemently ignored.

I'm starting to think that image of Kirk climbing the ice wall takes place shortly after ejecting out of this thread.

You seem to be the only one so utterly obsessed by this.
So here you go:

Have fun.

I'm going to go ahead and rub some people the wrong way by saying that MattJC's feelings are entirely legitimate. Given that there have been plenty of comments indicating that we would be getting a canon prequel that looks like the original, it should almost be expected that he -- and many others -- should feel this way after seeing these photos.

Given the stereotypical fanboy's penchant for keeping everything exactly the same as it was before, we should not be surprised by MattJC's comments at all. Indeed, we should be surprised that he is pretty much the only one expressing them in that manner. I'm wondering where all of the other MattJC's are hiding, as I know they're out there.

The problem is his presentation. He repeats the same wounded cry ad nauseum, which doesn't exactly foster debate. And -- in a room full of cheerleaders -- it's kind of a bummer. But that doesn't mean the cheerleaders should respond by stoning him to death, as that says more about the cheerleaders than it does about MattJC.

The best option would be to encourage him to elaborate on his feelings, as some here have attempted to do, albeit in such a hostile fashion that I am surprised he has responded at all.

Failing that, we should simply leave him alone, as he is obviously in pain. He should serve as a reminder of the many fans and expectations that will be left behind by this new movie. There's no need to gang up on him and add to his pain.

I find most of the new photos intriguing myself, although the new bridge seems a little busy and obnoxious. I'm sure I will get used to it. But no one can suggest that it looks anything like the 1966 TOS bridge, aside from the most basic structural elements. Nor is it a slightly modernized version of that bridge. No one would ever confuse the two bridges if you placed them side by side. So it's only natural that some will be disappointed.

Let's just hope they can express that disappointment a little more productively. ;)

Answer my question or leave.

I don't like that the producers won't admit it's reboot.
They're telling Trek fans what they want to hear, not the truth.
It shouldn't be that hard for these people to admit it.
We're not the target audience they're going for.
No, they want us to spend our money on this before they admit it's a reboot.
If you're going to kick me in the balls by doing a reboot, at least have the decency to do it free of charge.

Matt, I have a serious question for you: are you Autistic? I have a friend who is autistic and he gets very upset with change. I really do want to understand you.

That's the same damn thing.
If an alternate timeline gives them license to overwrite what has come before, then it IS a reboot.
This is just their pathetic way of trying to placate those who do not want a reboot.
I'd rather they just do a straight reboot and just be straightforward with Trek fans about it.
I didn't go into the threads about Stracynski's and Moore's ideas for future Trek and gave those posters a hard time about it.

That is a topic which falls well outside the scope of this discussion. If you really want to ask that question -- and I'm not suggesting that I think it's at all a good idea to begin with -- then PM or other more private means would be a more appropriate avenue to pursue it.

If we can find the topic here, I recommend we resume it now, without further delay.

^^^ I took your advice and sent a PM. At least I'm trying to understand the guy. Seems like the guy is really hurting.
Apologies if, in any way I derailed the thread more than it was already.

NOTE: Did anyone get the photo which was posted on UGO? I have not been able to access that page. Constantly getting ERROR messages. My e-mail info is in profile and under my avatar here. I feel like I'm the only one who can't get to that photo.

The link is very slow, but it's the same group shot which was posted as a thumbnail in the next post by datas_cat_spot.

Logical, flawlessly logical. :vulcan:

Ok, I'll chip in here - While I'm glad that we've finally been thrown a bone, I don't like what I've seen up to this point. There's a difference between updating a design and redesigning something altogether. When they've made a point of keeping the uniform so close to the originals, right down to a short-sleeve version of the sexist female version with fuck-me boots, it's a little disappointing to see such a drastic change in the bridge set, especially given the verbal olympics JJ and the writers have been going through to avoid the "r" word (which is apparently akin to an f-bomb in regards to this movie).

Plenty of people are cool with a reboot, and that's fine. Some people aren't, and that's fine too. But what grates on me the most has nothing to do with the movie or minutia, and has a lot to do with the attitude of an alarmingly large number of fans, which has them bashing anyone who says anything negative about the movie. I really don't get this attitude, nor the attitude that apparently things either have to be completely redesigned, or they have to look exactly like they did back in the '60s. :wtf: I don't think anyone expected that but they certainly didn't expect a redesign on this level either.

I can also understand MattJC as far as admitting the reboot thing. Not from the fans, and not so vehemently, but I do have to kind of roll my eyes at JJ, Orci and the gang practically tripping over each other to try and assure everyone that this movie isn't a reboot, while at the same time changing so much about the show. If it's a reboot, that's fine, but I think they should at least come out and say that it is.

I thought this thread was going to be about the EW article, but now I have gone through 5 pages of stuff about the MattJC dude vs other dudes. Fascinating stuff, probably more entertaining than the article is going to be. Carry on.
