AV CONTES | TV & MEDIA | FOREIGN AFFAIRS |

But the contest is for Films in from "any non-English speaking" country. The film is made in America and the actors speak English, so I don't see how it fits in, or why two people have chosen it. I don't get it.

Me neither. Other than the fact that Luc Besson and Jean Reno are French, but Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman certainly aren't. And if it was made in America too then I don't see how it can count.

Its a french film directed by a frenchmen with an american actress and a french actor. Granted its in English but the leading actor is French. It's filmed and takes place in the United States.

How many films out there are made and distriputed in only one language?

If it has to be something from bollywood or Japan then I will remove my entry and replace it.

Hundreds, actually. You can use pretty much any film that has to be subtitled or dubbed to be understood by an English-speaking audience. Why do you assume that it has to be Indian or Japanese?

My entry: Cinema Paradiso--Italian
Tuln's entry: Children of Heaven--Iranian
Starscape: Crouching Tiger--Chinese
Rowan Sjet: Run, Lola, Run --German

Seems like a pretty good spread there. There are TONS of films in languages other than English. Some suggestions:
I'm Not Scared
Mongol
Volver
The Lives of Others
The Chorus
The Sea Inside
Fanny and Alexander
Life is Beautiful
Central Station
Babette's Feast
Kolya
Cyrano de Bergerac
Raise the Red Lantern
Il Postino
La Vie en Rose
The Widow of St. Pierre
Turtles Can Fly
My Life as a Dog
....and about 100 more.

Thank you for som esuggestions, I just had one come to mind.

Leon is an English language remake of a French movie called The Professional starring the same cast. it's not quantum physics...

Didn’t realise that entries had to be non english speaking just assumed that because Leon was a french film it would have been okay. I will change my entry to the classic 1922 German film Nosferatu. It is more appropriate for this time of year anyway as it’s almost Halloween.

and point of order, just because the exteriors were filmed in America, doesn't make it an American movie.

otherwise you might as well call Blade 2, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Czech, Superman Returns and the Matrix trilogy Australian, Wolverine New Zealander and Batman Begins or Die Another Day Icelandic.

Just thinking that Nosferatu kind of falls under sci-fi / fantasy as it was based on bram stoker’s dracula. If it’s fine i will keep it as my entry but if not then i will go with Das Boat

So what do you go by? If it's the director's nationality then Hellboy (and Blade 2 ;) )is Mexican - and that makes as much sense as your examples.
