Will Before Dishonors Ending Affect Voyager books? Spoilers!

The problem with Janeway's character was that she was almost instantly promoted to admiral. Aren't there any ranks between captain and admiral?
That depends on whether a 1-pip admiral is a commodore (as in the 23rd century, but only seen in the 24th century in New Frontier), or a rear admiral, lower half (as in the current Navy).

If I remember right, Shelby was only a commodore in the prerelease publicity. By the time the book had actually come out, apparently someone had noticed that that rank didn't exist anymore and changed her to an admiral. Unless we're referring to another 24th century commodore I've forgotten...

I say again, no useful purpose, and to clarify I mean an in-universe purpose. I don't think that Star Trek sales were hurt overmuch by Janeway's death, and nor do I think they were increased much.

Well Pocket Books had already lost this Janeway fan before "Before Dishonor" and if they're planning on a comeback it had better be a good one in order to get me and others like me back.

Thank goodness there's fanfiction - I do read a lot of that. :)

Well, they've now got me (and others like me) more likely to buy a Voyager novel than before, so I guess that makes up for it, then. :)

The life and/or death of Janeway won't affect my buying practices in the least. The author switch, on the other hand, will. I probably wouldn't have bought any more Golden books (unless perhaps they got rave reviews here), but I will give Kristen Beyers work a shot.

^ Likewise. I'll be picking up Full Circle because I like Voyager, despite everything, and want to give Kirsten the opportunity to save a series that has been floundering (to be polite). The needless and poorly executed (terrible pun, I know) death of the main character leading into this novel is, if anything, a disincentive, so I guess I'm more like kimc in that regard.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I have liked Kirstens other trek novels, so i am all about getting it when it is out, I have been very curious to see what happens next for the VGR crew as awhole...I am wondering if Full Circle is going to have them all attending Janeways funeral and touch on it. Perhaps have Chakotay or some of the crew talk about her. Its all really speculation from all of us right now and only Kirsten knows for sure whos got the right idea as to which direction its going to go! I do have a question for you though Kirsten, is Full Circle a first part of a multi parter? whats the harm in telling that?????(he says while on his hands and knees hoping she tells us.)

Well, Kirsten, Dave Mack, KRAD, Bill Leisner, Marco, and myself, since all us authors of the Destiny and post-Destiny stuff are coordinating our efforts.

It's already been announced that Kirsten will be writing a second, yet-to-be-titled Voyager novel which is due out in October '09, about six months after Full Circle.

I am looking forward to Full Circle to see where Voyager is finally going. I'm hoping Voyager is going in a direction that will make it fun to read and not kind of plodding along like Homecoming.

I never bought Homecoming or The Farther Shore, though I read them. They were okay but not amazing. I never even looked at Spirit Walk. But I'll definitely be picking up Full Circle for Kirsten Beyer's taking over.

well, i wont spoil anything here but if you were to get Full Circle, youd probably be missing some things by skipping Spirit Walk

I'll live. I don't enjoy Christie Golden's writing; I'm sure Beyer will be able to bring those of us who skipped parts of the VOY Relaunch up to speed.

As I said before and I will say again for myself and the two to three hundred Voyager fans I represent (and I do represent a large and active Voyager message board and fandom). If Kathryn Janeway is dead at the end of Kristen Beyer's book there will be no other purchases.

Kristen I will tell you, we were looking forward to your series. We bought "Distant Shores" primarily for your short story in that book, but we want Janeway back and we will tell everyone. Don't discount us or insult us, we are grown women. I am 61 years old, I read Trek, but I also read Linnea Sinclair and Susan Grant. I truly believe that if you don't to give us what we want to read, we will find it elsewhere or write it ourselves.

You want us to rethink our perceptions, but it's really time for you to rethink yours. When have any of you looked at what really sells these days. Now I am not telling you to write that because you have to write true to yourselves, but don't use shock value which is very short lived, to kill off a very real opportunity that could be taken with a living Janeway.

The great appeal about Trek, is that it has always been about inclusion. You have excluded a lot of fans; we get called unkind names here. We are told "our" captain is unworthy of a life, that our captain has value only in death and the effect that death has on others. We don't like it and we have every right to dislike it, and every right to protest it.

Christopher, I read, I read a lot. I come from a reading family, my house has hundreds of books, don’t assume that because I don’t like the direction of the Trek Books that I don’t get it, or that I am somehow illiterate.

You don’t have to agree with us, but don’t talk down to us either.

If Kathryn Janeway is dead at the end of Kristen Beyer's book there will be no other purchases.

I recall some fans saying they'd black ban ST II if Spock was dead at the end of the movie, and they even calculated Paramount's projected loses on future box office sales, video releases, toys, novelizations, etc., and took out a fullpage ad in "Variety", and scored a big article in the "Wall Street Journal".

Sure, they got Spock back at the end of ST III, but ST II was a still huge hit - despite their black bans - and made more money than ST III, IIRC.

Furthermore, if Kirsten Beyer bows to fan pressure and returns Janeway to life at the end of "Full Circle" in an attempt to satisfy a small number of ST novel readers, there may be just as many other fans who get thoroughly annoyed by yet another miracle Star Trek resurrection.

As I have said several times in this thread, I think she should remain dead. Apart from one questionable event a few thousand years ago, when someone dies in the real world, they remain dead, and I personally want Janeway to remain dead, and I would have the same opinion if it was Picard or Sisko!

"I'm not telling you what to write, but if you don't write what I want, I'm not buying your book."

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, I'd be a rich bastard.

Again that topic now...but I've decided for myself that I won't read any Trek book anymore if Kathy stays dead at the end of Full Circle because, for me, Star Trek is kind of ruined then...I just don't understand why somebody would want to change or even kill the characters appearing in Trek on screen, it feels like as if Gandalf would have stayed lost after The Fellowship of the Ring (which would have absolutely sucked), at least to me. I have grown fond of the canon characters and frankly I could never grow that fond of 'book characters' only, so I don't see the point in killing the 'star' of a show, but I guess it all boils down to what your personal taste is:rolleyes: :)

But essentially, Gandalf the Grey did die, and was reborn as Gandalf the White.

What about if Kathryn Janeway stays dead, but continues to have an existence in Q Space, and is perhaps able to communicate with the outside world, and to influence events? Dead in ST/SF doesn't necessarily mean eliminated from having a role.
