NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

I wasn't impressed either. The real OSU (Oregon State) plays 15th ranked Utah on Thursday night in Salt Lake City. Anyone think they can pull off a second upset?

I tend to think that Oregon St. won't get the second consecutive upset for two reasons:
1.) The game with Utah is a road game, and against USC it's been playing in Corvallis that has given the Beavers the edge.
2.) Oregon St. has a habit of beign inconsistent, especially given how poorly they looked against Penn St. earlier.

Georgia has succumbed to the latest "fad" with college football fans, but it doesn't seem as effective as Penn St.'s "white out". Purdue tried it lsat season, but the "black out" just doesn't seem to have the same effect. It's not as noticeable, especially at a night game.

When South Carolina attempted to black out Florida in 2001, and Florida blew them out, Steve Spurrier commented that the black provided an excellent backdrop for the players to see the ball.

We saw the same kind of effect in West Lafayette, IN when OSU played Purdue.

I find that other fad, black uniforms for a team whose traditional colors are other than that, just as silly (even if the visual effect is kinda cool, in some instances). Rutgers tried it against WVU last year, and the Mountaineers hung a 31-3 loss on them in Piscataway. So much for intimidation and/or firing your kids up.

You're called the Scarlet Knights for a reason.

Texas has been great this year. Definitely top 10 if not top 5 ranking.

Texas has played precisely nobody. It's easy to look great under those circumstances.

While such may well change in the coming weeks, they've thus far proven themselves a pretty solid Top 25 team, and nothing more. My best guess is two losses for UT in its next five games.

On the other hand, if they get through that stretch unbeaten, they've a tremendous argument for number one.

No one? They played Arkansas!

Who has Missouri played? Illinois who isn't even ranked anymore?

Penn State? Who have they played?

BYU?

South Florida?

Half the time most teams play a soft opening week.

Don't faint, but this time I have to go with JM1776, here. Arkansas is "someone" in name only. Their record is 2-2. The two wins were against Western Illinois 28-24 and Louisiana-Monroe 28-27. Not exactly stirring results. The two losses are a bit more damning - home to Alabama 49-14 and at Texas 52-10.

That Texas team has blown out all four opponents, with none of them offerieng even a slight challenge.

Who has Missouri played? Illinois who isn't even ranked anymore?

Penn State? Who have they played?
Both of those teams have own all of their games in very convincing fashion. Although Missouri did have a somewhat tough time against Illinois, the game wasn't as close as the score implies.

Penn St. ... I'm not completely sold on them yet, but again they've won all 5 of their games in convincing fashion. One of those was a 45-14 demolition of the Oregon St. team that just recently dominated the near consensus #1 team in the country.

BYU? - I will grant you one game, the 28-27 victory over Washington that was very controversial. The other three were blowouts, including back to back shutouts of UCLA(59-0) and Wyoming(44-0)

South Florida? - true that three of their wins were closer than they should have been, but that includes a win over a very good Kansas team, an always competitive Central Fla. and a fast improving Fla. Atlantic. The other two wins were blowouts. But they are undefeated.

Half the time most teams play a soft opening week.
That is often true. The SEC for example plays fewer BCS teams in their non-conference schedule than any other conference. Still, their post-season record mitigates that somewhat.

BTW, JM1776 you wee right on the mark about Alabama. Nobody has a more impressive opening so far than the Tide. Destruction of Clemson, WKy, and Arkansas and solid wins over Tulane and Georgia.... works for me. And it's no coincidence that they seem to have the most impressive offensive and defensive lines.

I would call Georgia destruction, too.

At a 3rd ranked team, who only started coming back once the opponent started letting up after a 31-0 first half, and 'Bama started substitution to get the younger team playing time.

The final score is not indicative of the game played, IMO.

Though, I could be biased. ;)

Now that I didn't know, since I wasn't able to see any of that game. Yeah... definitely "destruction".

Oh holy Bear Bryant!!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but ... didn't Saban win the national title - really, he shared it - in his second season as coach of LSU? Shoot, he might be in line to do it again.

Pittsburgh downs #10 USF and Oregon State and Utah are tied with just over a minute left to play.

Incredible finish to the Oregon St/Utah game! Makes me wish I'd stayed up to watch it all. Down by 8 with under 2 minutes to go? No problem!!!

That defeat has to be pretty devestating after OSU beat USC. They should be able to get back on track though, their next game is against Washington State.

Utah having 6 wins now qualifies them for a bowl. And here's one guy hoping they crash the BCS party!

As a Crimson Tide fan, I must say it's been very nice to hear all the media attention that Alabama has gotten over the past week. They have played great football and deserve their high ranking, no matter how long they keep it. I expect a letdown, however, maybe even against Kentucky tomorrow. The team is still very young and the SEC is very tough. I'm not drinking the kool-aid yet - I still expect LSU to wrap up the Western division when the Tide heads down there next month. Still, Saban has revitalized the program, and deserves what he's being paid (although I was a Shula supporter).

I never cared much at all for Bama, nor have I been a fan of the wya Saban left LSU and the Dolphins. However, there's no denying what he's accomplished in such a short time at Bama. Long way sto go, but it's looked great so far.

I've been a 'Bama fan since the 1970's when my dad retired there. Even though I also lived in Georgia and Florida, Alabama remains my favorite team.

The Ohio State/Wisconsin game is on at the same time as the Oregon/USC game tonight Neroon. Looks like we'll both have something to watch during commercial breaks.

The day has been more interesting than I thought it'd be, so far. Florida had a tougher time with Arkansas than the score indicates. Penn St. really struggled with Purdue. Kansas is in a nailbiter with Iowa St.

But Oklahoma destroyed Baylor, and Sam Bradford is my front-runner for the Heisman trophy.

The OSU/ Wisconsin game has a few side-stories. It's a conference game. The Badgers are coming off a disheartening loss to Michigan. But most intriguing for me is how will Terelle Pryor handle a start in a night game and in one of the most hostile environments in the country? I hate playing there, because of the crowd throwing crap all the time. Then again, I have no idea how much discipline has been handed out to the idiots who actually throw the stuff. Of particular note, apparently the entire Wisconsin band has been suspended due to hazing, alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct. The second time in three years they've been disciplined. And here I thought that was reserved for the Stanford band.
