Johnny Depp will be in "Pirates of the Caribbean 4"

Thoguh I'm not surprised about a Pirates 4, the notion does put me ill at ease. 1 was enjoyable, 2 was ok, 3 was a two-and-a-half hour long exploration of the meaning of FUBAR. With a pattern like that seeming to form, I don't hold out much hope for a fouth installment.

Wow, this is nearly exactly what I was going to say. Except maybe "ok" to define 2 is more credit than I might have applied.

Really as it was suggested on pg. 1, I feel the best way to make a Pirates 4 really good is to get back to the fun romp of the first. For this series I really don't care if that means taking the same script and just changing a few names/places and reshooting the same script. I sorta feel the same about the Spiderman franchise, except use the script for 2.

As for Depp as Tonto I'm leary. He could make it work. Which is how I feel about Rogan as Green Hornet. Not totally sold but not totally against until I see/hear more.

The only things wrong with the original trilogy (which I enjoyed) was the editing. The move was too long, and there were quite a few scenes that could have been shortened without detriment to the story. The ridiculous, never-ending, nine minute fight on the water wheel for example.

These movies should be faster, and under two hours. They are very well crafted movies though, and more is fine if Depp is still involved.

And the initial buzz is that George Clooney has been hit up for the role as the Lone Ranger. You'd need a leading man like that if you're going to have an actor the calibre of Depp playing his right-hand man, so I approve.

This is great news! I loved the first two and was only slightly disappointed by the last one. Jettisoning Will and Elizabeth will remove the 'drama' and make it more light and fun like the original. My favorite characters were always Jack and Barbossa... should be great!

Unlike most (it seems from this thread), I loved every single movie of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and I look forward to seeing a fourth. Awhile back, Johnny Depp said he would be interested in playing Jack Sparrow again if the script was good, and since this is moving forward, I can only trust that the script is good. There's no need for Will and Elizabeth, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Barbossa and the rest of the Black Pearl crew again (and maybe Anamaria will return).

I don't care one way or the other about The Lone Ranger. :p

Gah, no more Barbossa. Three movies, and what do we learn of his character? About nothing, except that he isn't the most loyal guy. Whoopee... Depp aside, another Pirates should involve a different cast entirely.

Depp as tonto? uhm. Okay.

anyways what i like about Depp is that he's a phenomenal actor, but he's really willing to do fun genre roles, and doesn't look at them as beneath him. Granted, most of the time they involve tim burton but still :)

As far as Pirates go... as long as they are done with the majority of the rest of the cast, i'm onboard with Pirates 4. The door is wide open to take the franchise in a new direction.

I agree they need to cut out the bloat, but I think a big part of that was the two-film back to back structure. I feel matrix 2 and 3, kill bill, and pirates all feel bloated and stretched to fill two movies. If i wasn't such a fan of lotr books i probably would feel like those movies were bloated too.

Give us Jack Sparrow, that short pudgy guy who's his #1 sidekick, and a whole new cast please.

As long as the next Pirates keeps it sights on Depp, I'll be interested.

And seeing him square off against Banderas again would be awesome!

Yeah. In retrospect, it's kinda too bad that Depp & Banderas didn't get to face off more mano-a-mano in Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

You've got to wonder who can hold his own against Depp (who I'm guessing will get all the best lines and funny moments while the Ranger plays it straight).

I was wondering this myself. I suppose George Clooney might work. I was thinking more along the lines of Christian Bale or Russell Crowe.

Ugh.. more screaming fangirls.

Eh. It's still better than Twilight.

Oh, come on. The rediculous, over the top fight scenes are the whole reason for these movies to exist in the first place.

A lot of people here are really down on At World's End. I was too at first. But the more I watch it, the more I appreciate it for what it is rather than what I thought it should be. It's a bit long but I kinda liked that epic scale. I think it would be a mistake to try to do something that big for Part 4 but I liked it well enough in Part 3.

I'm a fan of the series. Like most movie franchises the original is still the best. I thought the third one tried too hard to be epic.

This is my opinion too. By the time of the third movie, Pirates had become so mired in the weight of its own continuity that I believe the story imploded and collapsed in on itself. A 4th movie should provide the opportunity to start over with a self-contained original story, and I believe that is the recipe for reinvigorating the franchise from a creative standpoint.

I loved all three movies, and I'd very much enjoy seeing another. The quest for the fountain of youth hinted at at the end of the third movie would be a good plot to use.

These movies are at their best when they don't take themselves too seriously like say The Matrix movies. They need to try to be more funny in the next one.

IMO, Pirates 2 was by far the best, because it was by the far the most focused on Jack, who was, apart from Norrington and perhaps Davy Jones, the only interesting character in the trilogy.

I agree about Norrington. Heck, I really wish there could be a convenient way to bring him back for the next one. I felt like he often got the short end of the stick despite being a pretty decent guy. Particularly when you look at his role in The Curse of the Black Pearl, 99% of the time, THAT character would end up being a pompous, ineffectual windbag who was only really interested in Elizabeth for her father's money or something. But lo & behold, here we have a romantic rival in a Disney movie who can more than hold his own in a swordfight fighting alongside the good guys and gives up the girl of his own free will when he realizes that she's just not that into him. In the words of Captain Jack, "Still rooting for you, mate!"

But I never found Davy Jones all that interesting, partly because his backstory was too unclear and his motivations just seemed to be arbitrary evil. I preferred the more down to earth Captain Barbosa. He was very easy to understand. He was a pirate and a gentleman with a ruthless self-interest in the preservation of pirate-kind and a desire to regain his humanity.

The Wiki says he is part Cherokee (and who isn't ;) )

Major Frank Burns.

You "come on". I love action as much as the next guy but I should never be watching such a scene bored and wondering when the hell it was going to end.

^^ I got that during Crystal Skull's jungle chase, but not during the wheel fight. Man, I love that scene...
