Buying a Broken Disc in Collection

Danoz

So, basically... I have all seven seasons of Star Trek:TNG

Is it possible to purchase just one replacement disk somewhere... short of ordering it on Netflix and burning it? This is sort of frustrating because I'd like to keep everything intact and I don't want to spent 50 dollars on a replacement season (obviously). Any place you know that sells replacement disks like this?

Don't think they do that. Unless you try to get it off ebay. There is another way you can get a replacement disc with the "help" of Nexflix, but I probably shouldn't mention it. PM me if you are curious.

If you still have the receipt and it's within a reasonable time, you can get a replacement set from the retailer, but I guess that too much time has passed.

I've noticed that most companies are reasonable about this though. It's the rare person who can watch a whole TV series within a couple of weeks of purchase.

I once bought an X-Files boxset that I didn't watch for six month after purchase and when I did, I found one of the discs was scratched and skipping. The thing I did was to contact the customer services department at Fox UK, and explain my problem. They gave me an address to send the single faulty disc to, and after they checked it for themselves, they sent me a replacement. You ought to look up Paramount's Customer Service details and drop them a line.

Don't even suggest a thing like that. That's taking advantage of a service and a scummy thing to do. Costs go up when you do that and it ruins it for everyone.

Shame on you.

In fairness, the OP already suggested he could get it off Nexflix.

He mentioned renting it and copying it. Since he already owns it, that's one way of using Netflix. The other way that was hinted at it is much more of a scumbag move.

Why not just contact Paramount Home Entertainment? PHE_CustomerService@Paramount.com

Lucky you.

FOX stateside traditionally has you send in the whole boxed set even if only one disc is faulty, and man do I have horror stories about that.

This happened to me with Millennium Seasons 2 and 3, and a copy of The Illusionist I had picked up for my girlfriend. I was told I had to send the complete boxed sets of Millennium back. Why, I wondered, as only one disc in each was faulty? Just company policy, they say.

So I wait, and I get replacements back, except the third Millennium set is still faulty and The Illusionist I got back was in full-screen as opposed to widescreen.

When I sent Millennium Season 3 and The Illusionist back again, I got Millennium Seasons 2 and 3 in return. I'm waiting to hear back about this stupid error.

I gotta get my word in before the mods descend - as the morals on display here are questionable.

First - renting the disc and saying it never arrived is, another poster pointed out, pure and simple theft. Netflix might lose thousands a year to this and this goes on everyone's subscriptions. It is a tax on the honest to subsidise the dishonest.

As for downloading or copying being OK - at least in the USA for the OP this would be "fair use" as he already owns the disc, IMHO. However simply downloading or copying as a matter of course to acquire media infringes the copyright of those selling DVDs.

This is morally dubious AT BEST and like music copyright infringement takes money away from those justified to earn it, bastards though record companies are. While I am not innocent here myself I do believe that everyone deserves to earn money and live a good life as the results of their work, and I do pay for music wherever possible.

That said I really do love the opportunity to post my favourite list of things record companies and eventually film companies will have to do to survive the digital age: -

1. Supply genuinely CD quality (preferably better, like 24/96) files, not 128kbps MP3s.
2. Abandon DRM - period.
3. Give a lot more away for free - free bonus tracks, free live set with an album, etc.
4. Get smaller, get smarter. Stop treating artists so badly that a lot dont notice any difference between selling records and people downloading them for free.
5. Stop treating everyone like thieves. We are not stealing when we copy our CDs for the car, we are not stealing when we copy CDs to our MP3 players. The industry has however claimed both.

I could go on...

Bottom line - media should be paid for. The OP should not have to pay for another whole box set to replace one damaged disc, but he should certainly not steal one from Netflix, and generally we should all be willing to pay for entertainment.

Just so we're clear, my comment earlier had nothing to do with taking the NetFlix disc and reporting it never arrived. That thought hadn't even occurred to me. I'm not that low. Being a happy NetFlix user myself, I wouldn't want to screw the company that way.

My comment sounded more shady then I intended it to.

Just contact Paramount Homevideo and have them send you a replacement disc. They'll more than likely do it for free plus shipping after you send them the damaged disc.

Don't be so easy on yourself. What you implied was just as shady and dishonest.

Phones up customer services: "This package... it looks like a truck ran over it... and the discs shattered to a hundred pieces, and half of the pieces have fell down the back of my couch. What should I do?"

Indysolo, if you wish to continue our discussion on my implications, let's do it in PMs. I would love to explain fuller, if you are interested, my point of view and the implications of my earlier statement.

As for the OP, you can try to contact Paramount Home Video, as other have suggested. Personally, I have had problems in doing so. I bought a DVD from them about a year ago and it was damaged. I tried to contact them, but they have yet to get back to me on this (20 Century Fox also is pretty bad at this, imo). I still had the receipt, so I was able to get it back to the store within reason. DVDs can be very tricky. Some stores may allow you to swap it out for a new one w/o the receipt. Walmart might be a way to go, assuming they didn't change their policy and they have the item in stock, of course.

I actually had this very issue myself a few weeks ago with a disc in the Voyager Season 6 set. I tracked down an email address for Paramount Home Video ( PHE_CustomerService@Paramount.com ) and emailed them. They got back to me within about a week and said they would be happy to send me a relacement disc.

They needed to know some information (home address, where I bought it, when, which disc, UPC code, etc.). However, I couldn't find a UPC code anywhere. I had a legit product that was purchased from Amazon, yet I couldn't find the UPC on it anywhere.

I replied to Paramount with the answer to all their questions and told them the product didn't have a UPC code on it. I haven't heard back from them since. The problem is, I don't know if that means they're still sending me my disc, or since I couldn't find a UPC code, they're just ignoring me, assuming I have a bootleg copy or something.

I'm not positive which is which, but the case that holds the DVDs is thin, clear plastic that opens like a book. That is then placed into two plastic sleeves. I bought it in December 2004, if that helps.

I found a picture on Memory Alpha of the version I have:

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:VOY_Season_6_DVD-Region_1.jpg

Ah, looks quite different from ours unfortunately. On the bulky plastic R2 cases, the UPC (or european equivalent which is 13 digits to the US one which is 12) it's on a piece of card that holds the case - and can easily be lost:(
On the slimline ones (which is just the usual four or so think single cases) it's on the bottom of the box.
